Intel Core i3 @ 4.0GHz

Would this CPU run GTA IV at a pretty good level?

4.2 GHz is a massive overclock and it'll be great to play any game at that clock speed. But, make sure the OC is stable and the voltages are under control.

Which cpu are you on about?

 

If it's a pentium IV, then probably not very well.

would i be safer paying more for an i5 with it being quad core?

id personally go for the i-5, or if you can afford it, and 1-7 in a 1366 socket. and their specs have no mention of video cards - are they expecting you to use on board ?

I'd be using a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 5770 for GPU.

 

EDIT: I'd kinda like to know how GTA IV would run with this before considering the i5 or i7. If required, I would save more and go for the i5 most likely but want to know it would be a necessary purchase first.

realistically with this game more is better...save a little more and get a system that honestly will serve you longer as well as play future games better.

As said, i3 is very new. Your best bet is a core i5 750. I just picked up two of those yesterday. Can't wait to try them. I might be inclined to test the game with the 5770 on that platform for you but I won't have all the parts I need for a week or so. It would also mean letting my installation go and, quite frankly, I've got the game running very sweetly and it took a little bit of effort (tweaks, mods, command lines). Not in a hurry to uninstall my favorite game while its running so well.

i have had chances to play with the i-3 as a reference sample and a final production sample. in my opinion it is basically like the celeron of the family (but much more capable than celerons were to mainstream cpu's). but for heavy gaming it just wont cut it on many levels... some games will run nice, others like crap. i know this one would be overclocked, but that much of an overclock for that cpu on air will surely shorten its mtbf.

 

 

but for me personally in all of intel's I series i only go with the top end I-7 chips with a 1366 socket. those are for gamers and enthusiasts.
