joshuazh
Whats do graphic cards do you guys use for about maybe 50+ framrates? I might get a new one, and i want a cheap on i have seen the ati 4870 is $160, and its pretty good i think i have 8gb ram and quad core, with a sucky ati 4350 graphics card i get 20-30 fps, 20-25 when raining dark i set the traffic to the highest lol, i just like it that way, dont tell me to turn it down even tho it affects performance a lot, i have optimized my settings, lowest possible, in a window EDIT: Specs 8gb ram Intel Core 2 quad 2.33 ghz ATI Radeon HD 4350 Directx 11 (lol do i need to say this) Anything else I need to add, like bus speed? BTW, I'm a total noob so don't confuse me Edited March 31, 2010 by joshuazh
crackdawg
I've seen close to that on a 8800, but it had a duo extreme CPU and some light overclocking. a 4xxxHD or 5xxxHD or Nvidia 280 or 290 would do it. Not the low profile cards but one with like 256bit GDDR3 at 1GB or better and 600/1800 or better clocks. CPU matters more though, the AI, traffic etc don't use GPU or even physx, neither does some of the core rendering in this game. GDDR3 is only on 220 and better, not sure about ATI, you'll probably get a better bang for the buck with ATI. Ryan
I get 60+ FPS on my GTX 285. One of those babies is around $300 to $400 though. A GTX 260 would be a good card. They're around $200 though.

Jigglyass
woah nice..anyone know how a 4850 does? Would be a huge improvement over what you have. 1GB version preferred.
joshuazh
how much fps u get on that? cause its wayyyy cheaper than a 4870
cacarla
how much fps u get on that? cause its wayyyy cheaper than a 4870 Somewhere around 30 FPS with your above system is very much expected. In simple words, it would be smooth gameplay but the 4850 is getting a little older as everyday passes so the 4870 is the entry level card today. WTFX
u didn't list any specs. i'm gonna throw in the guess that u're cpu bottlenecked just like everyone. 4850 1 gig is rly nice, i have it, but my dual core is bottlenecking it. very good bang for buck at the time i got it, now i'd go for 5xxx series card as dx11 is soon gonna be the industry standard
joshuazh
im a real noob, how do i get the full, detailed specs? and what's bottlenecking? the name sorta implies its limiting the graphic card...
Ryan
im a real noob, how do i get the full, detailed specs?and what's bottlenecking? the name sorta implies its limiting the graphic card... Most people know they're system specs off by heart. Start Menu>Run>dxdiag That will tell you what your specs are. And for gods sake, doesn't post a huge list of useless sh*t. Just the basics. CPU, RAM, ect... Bottlenecking: A bottleneck is a phenomenon where the performance or capacity of an entire system is limited by a single or limited number of components or resources. The term bottleneck is taken from the 'assets are water' metaphor. As water is poured out of a bottle, the rate of outflow is limited by the width of the conduit of exit - that is, bottleneck. Increase the width of the bottleneck, and you can increase the rate of which the water flows out. Pertaining to a business, a firm will address the 'bottleneck' that is limiting production. crackdawg
I use to pwn in MP combat with medium settings with a 5400 CPU and 8800 GT 512MB card at 30AFPS. Most of this stuff should actually get at least 40 unless you don't take care of your system. 65FPS is the most I've ever seen this game do and that was on a classified EVGA 285 and i7 extreme.. Also despite populer opinion here you don't have to play GTA IV at 1600x1200, or some other idiotic resolution. Anything 1200x960 or better gives the same view range. joshuazh
i take very good care... oh i kno the specs off heart, i thought you meant really, really detailed, like channel speed or something.. 8gb ram Intel Core 2 quad 2.33 ghz ATI Radeon HD 4350 Directx 11 (lol do i need this)

Turn FSAA off and lower texture filtering some or set it to app controlled and config it from gta.

joshuazh
i meant a cheap graphic card that would perform decently and get me maybe 40 fps all the time, maybe thirty at night in rain in car exploding police with ur grenades.... so will 4850 perform well? joshuazh
thats pretty cheap lol , i kno this is impossible, but $50? 70 maybe.. the point is, im turning 14, and my parents wont give me a present, so I'm hoping if i find something cheap i can persuade them to get it and i can play gta iv without any lag... btw tomorrow is my birthday, APRIL 1ST! Even tho ive told people its my birthday today, people still think im tricking them :'(
viometrix
im sorry young man but a $50- 70 card just wont cut it. i do hope you have a happy birthday. the lowest you can get that is passable is about 150 for a gts 250 (unless you get a 1gb edition), and its not even great for this game, my g/f uses it on her system but has all her settings low - medium. my son has a 5770 from ati and it does very decent. a 5870 2gb edition just came out, i have a reference card and it does great. unfortunately it is not mine to keep :-(

crackdawg
Things that handicap cheap cards, like compare some 512MB GDDR3 8800 GT cards to a 220 with 1GB GDDR3 low-profile.. core clock shader clock memory bandwidth stream processors Shader models are usually the same. IMO the memory bandwidth is the true handicap, a low profile or low price 200 series will be 128bit compared to a older premium cards 256bit. It'll still have the GDDR3 though, but core clock+shader clock+stream processors along with memory bandwidth will be significantly lower. This applies to both Nvidia and ATI. A 512bit card is going to be way out of your budget. My card was a 256bit though and it did fine. A 256bit 1GB 200 series or 4xxxx series can get you to 50FPS depending on CPU. Newegg has 256bit 1GB ATI and Nvidia cards for like $109 that have decent specs. I'd hit Google shopping and Ebay, maybe Amazon. I'd personally go for 1GB 256bit with the most stream processors that I can get on my budget. Edited April 1, 2010 by crackdawg
