Ilovevicecity324
Ok, so I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but I really just have a serious opinion about these "handheld" game consoles like "Sony Psps" and "Nintendo DS" etc.... etc.... I just think......well.....why bother? I mean, to me, it seems kind of like something either a bunch of little kids play because their parents won't let them get a real console or it's just something a bunch of adult nerds do because they can't find a real hobby. If I saw a guy in his 30s or 40s sitting there playing a PSP or something handheld...my first thought would be "Dude, does that guy have a REAL life? Is he too cheap to go out and buy a real console like a Ps3 or Xbox 360?" Also, I've tried playing handheld games before and graphics are just not as great as they would be if you were playing with a television set. So, like I said, not trying to piss anybody off or anything, but I just think that handhelds are just a complete waste of time and money and I think if you are going to blow your time playing video games- you may as well just go ahead and get the Wii, PS3s, or 360s IMO. Algonquin Bridge
I own a Nintendo DS, as well as an Xbox 360 (I have a few other consoles, but I'm not going to list them unless prompted). I like the DS because it's portable, making it a fabulous thing to take with me when on long-haul road-travel, or abroad. It also has a few games that I do enjoy; the Ace Attorney series, as well as Hotel Dusk: Room 215. At home? Yeah, I play on my console(s) more often...but only because my computer is on the blink! And, as Mr. Futurama Freak said, gaming isn't all about the graphics.

You know video games are not all about how good the visuals are, right? Yeah, and you can't lug your widescreen TV around with you on the bus. Anyway, there's obviously a market for them, people are buying them. trip
I think someone is just a bit upset that they don't have a nice handheld game system I have one of those little nintendo advanced sp or whatever it's called. I still use it here and there because as others said you can't play a console while taking public transportation. I would like a psp, but I just can't see spending psp kind of money for something I won't use but more than 15 minutes a day. I'd say most handheld gamers are more hardcore than the people that are content with just playing at home, since I'm willing to bet most people who have a handheld have other gaming rigs at home. Tyler
NERDS!!!!!!! I love 80's allusion's. Anyway's when I was younger I loved bringing my Gameboy colour around with me on long trips, or to show off (I was in a poorer neighborhood). Though, these days I find that the DS couldn't fit in my pockets next to my keys, phone, and wallet. So to answer your question I believe that handeld gamers are usually kids, or men who have empty pockets .
GSXRSpeed
Have you seen the new Nintendo DS XL!?!?!? Like everyone else has said they are good for when you can't have your TV and console with you. For the record, I do not have a handheld gaming system other than my phone.
HolyGrenadeFrenzy
The US & THEM approach doesn't work very well when it comes to gamers. Even console fanboys and what not are all just looking for a means to divide and conquer to get out all there piss and vinegar, or as the english say: Take THE Piss out on someone. You see, some of us remember actually having Pac Man Fever and not just the song but the actual gaming experience at the bowling allies and arcades. The current games were not even a dream back then. So...Its all good. We don't care what kind of thing you do as long as your cool with the hobbies and experiences of others to contribute to one and all and to further the human experience and press for the out of box thinker that can push their own limitations on the games and off. Some of us call it the fellowship of other gamers. Because inspiration comes from all directions and that includes games and gamers whom are completely different from you. The-King
I mostly consider people over the age of 20 who play more than 5 hours of video games a week or teenagers who play 20+ hours a week nerds. I play over twenty hours a week, I'm nineteen and I would probably kick your ass if you called me a nerd to my face as an insult. I go to College four days a week and am somewhat actively looking for a job. I fail to see how regularly gaming equates to nerdiness, most people watch twice as much TV and TV, when compared to games is actually enormously less healthy. Not to mention the massive social aspect of modern gaming, which you could never get from watching TV or a Movie. |PropagandaIncorporated:|: Steam:|: DeviantArt:|: Last.FM|

Vanilla Shake
I mostly consider people over the age of 20 who play more than 5 hours of video games a week or teenagers who play 20+ hours a week nerds. Well, good for you. I prefer playing Grand Theft Auto IV for an hour or so over wasting hours upon hours of my life watching mind-numbingly retarded television shows. Only TV I can sit through is South Park and football (American football). And I can also sit through a Yankees game. But apart from that, I don't watch anything else. I devote the majority of my time to looking for a job, music and songwriting. TC718 / <629 / CF5
Otter
Wait wait wait. So if a fella plays a PSP on his 45 minute commute to work, he's got less of a life than some fat f*ck sitting in front of his PS3 at home? I don't really follow your argument. Handheld systems are meant to be portable. They're like a cheesy novel or watching a music video on your ipod - fun distractions from the daily grind. A real nerd is someone who takes their DS to a house party and sits in the corner with it. Then again, at least he went to the house party, unlike fat PS3 slob mentioned above. Anyhow, I have a DS and love it, but I honestly don't use it much unless I'm on a trip somewhere. I've got a bunch of indepth games on my iPod, but never really play anything besides Doodle Jump. Blizzard14
DOOD I LOEV <3 MY DS DUN BE HATIN BRAH But seriously, I think that people who have handhelds just have them because they want to play a game or two when they aren't at home('specially if you are a PC Gamer like me, but since I have no life, I don't leave my house very often, so I don't have a handheld). UNLESS, they are at home laying on their beds with their DS/PSP right in their faces. Edited March 30, 2010 by Blizzard14
Vanilla Shake
I used to have a PSP, but I only got that when they announced that a GTA was going to be on it. I only played the two GTAs that were released for it and then it just started to collect dust. I didn't need it for music because I already had an iPod, and I'd only really use it if I were going on a trip or something. One of my best friends broke his iPod, so I lent him the PSP to use for music. He broke that as well, but I really didn't care because if I got it back I probably wouldn't use it anyway. Now, the only portable game I have is Chinatown Wars on my iPhone, and I rarely even play it. Actually, I think that's 'cause I'm stuck on a mission... meta187
Anyway, there's obviously a market for them, people are buying them. Not just people but ALL people. Internationally, young, old, afluent, middle class and poor are buying them up at a fairly decent rate. I had a little downtime with GTA Chinatown Wars over the holidays and was pleasantly suprised how much I was enjoying it. This "no life" thing you suggest may certainly apply to some but when you see major celebrities on primetime commercials playing Professor Layton and the Curious Village on their couch you should know well enough that it's broken into the mainstream. ~ Studio: Q-13 Lounge / Q:13 Warrior Tunes / Interweb Chex Mix, yo.~

You're a moron. Oh, I'm not trying to piss you off or anything. And oh yeah, based on that post, you must not get out a whole hell of a lot, so who's the nerd now? Can you take your PS3 with you when you're on a bus or in a restaurant? That said, I hardly use my PSP, but I will take it with me on vacation and to restaurants, and browse the internet while I'm there. (So I guess I am a bit of one.) Edited March 30, 2010 by Runey. fxtr
Actually, I don't think that handheld gamers are nerds. Handheld consoles are great when you want to play\bored while traveling. It's like saying that "real" consoles gamers are nerds. Gaming is gaming. Every gamer should play whatever he/she wants to.
Robinski
If you're here (i.e. an internet forum dedicated to a specific video game) you've already got some nerd blood in you, add to that the fact that the OP has a username devoted specifically to a video game then he most certainly is a nerd. This would be true, if games were only played by nerd which definitely doesn't ring true today; you'd be hard pressed to find a young male in my college that doesn't play games regularly. It's just this generation's TV I think. I'm not really into handhelds, though I did absolutely love my GameBoy with the Pokemon games. I can understand why people do have them though, especially for stuff like the commute or long journeys, but personally I just listen to music and end up zoning out. Ari Gold
Personally, I prefer listening to my iPod as I'm a sucker for music, and even that I'll only listen to if I'm quietly studying somewhere, on public transport by myself, or walking to a destination by myself. If I was to play PSP while sitting on a train, I wouldn't consider myself nerdy, I would just consider it to be less boring than looking outside at f*cking houses and trees like an insufferable moron. If I was with someone on the train, i.e. a friend, then yeah, playing a PSP while he's there is not only rude but plain geeky. All about the time and place, hombre. 432Onimijneb
This is kinda of getting side tracked... But the OP does mention by playing handhelds are nerdy, then what are consoles? Even more nerdy? OF course not everyone has played a video game and continues doing so. Say you've done your test/assignment/homework (high school or even eek! elementary school work ) or job what do you do? TV, friends, music, hobbies. And maybe a hobby is gaming. I think a whole load of people are hypocrites or some boundary between levels of nerdiness. For a tart we've all joined a forum dedicated to a game. There's students/young adults/adults here, and I'm pretty sure we are all socially active whether if your social group is nerdy or whatever. I usually keep my game chat to people who can comply e.i other gamers. I don't just go up to some random chick/dude and talk about how I got a Killamanjaro in Halo or how my Borderlands character is leveling up. I mean what the f*ck, now that's socially a nerd when they don't know it and thinks that just fine to do what I just said. Once in school in a media subject we were talking about CG effects or effects in general, I forget. But then they showed part of Halo 3's announcement trailer of the Chiefs helmet and some guy shouted, "If anyone knows who he is, is a nerd!". My brain then self destructed from the amounts of stupidity. I've learned to accept people's interest to themselves. I thought that people who do model trains sets are just sad. But if that's what they like then good on them to continue their passion for it even when their 30+ (still think its weird). Then there's the levels of nerdiness, especially reflects itself in RPG's. (Amongst gamers themselves.) e.g Dragon Age Origins, Borderlands - acceptable Runescape - f*cking nerd! And I know what you're thinking, "This guy must be a major nerd since he mentioned Runescape and trying to hide it." I've haven't played it, but why did I just write that? I was affected by worthless people's thoughts i.e you lot "Cause I'm not THAT nerdy!" But enough of that. I don't think handhelds are nerdy, basically everyone here has one.
