yoječ
Hi there. I plan to buy a new PC. I'm considering to buy one of these CPUs: Intel C2Q Q9400 (2,66GHz, 6MB cache) - ~226$/€168 Intel C2Q Q9550 (2,83GHz, 12MB cache) - ~336$/€250 I know Q9550 is better, but it's also a lot more expensive. And I mean A LOT. It's basically 1,5x the price of Q9400. Is it really worth that extra money? 12MB cache sounds tempting, but is it really that noticeable? Garfield 2
I use the Q9400 - Good performance for decent money. I wouldn't say it's worth buying the Q9550 unless you have a HD5870 or similar.
yoječ
Erm... I just saw how cheap the AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE is. 187$/€140. That pretty much cancels these Quads out. Even though I'll have to spend more cash on MB and RAM, it's still cheaper than Q9400. That's probably the best choice. Starion
AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE is. Do it! I've got one, it's easily overclocked to over 3.6ghz on stock cooling (mines at 3.6), and it also easily runs GTAIV on high. mod it with Nitrous Oxide and chassis dyno. Don't forget you'll need to buy an AMD motherboard too, which can cost quite alot if you want good quality (may even end up more expensive altogether). http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Components/...productId=30247 Pretty cheap for a q9550 right there. He's buying a new PC, so I'm pretty sure he had getting a new motherboard planned anyways.

Yeah I know MB costs more, but overall AMD CPU turns out to be cheaper. About that Q9550 - shipping costs will probably kill me.
Dup
I bought a Q9550 second hand for £90, Asus Maximus II Extreme for £60 and got a brand new 4GB Corsair Dominator 8500 DDR2 kit through RMA of my old DDR1 that broke on my AMD socket 939 system. Lifetime warranty FTW. Cheap DDR2 is out there second hand though. I won't see the point in buying brand new S775 hardware really, you might as well save up the marginal extra and go for an i5 system or similar or buy second hand where you can. It might mean waiting for various components but its good money saving. My build cost (see it here: Q9550 = £90 Maximus II Formula = £50 4GB Corsair Dominator PC8500 = Free (£40 second hand for similar stuff) Lian Li PC-7 FW Case = New, £70 Corsair HX750 = New, £120 Samsung DVD Drive = New, £17 eVGA 8800GTS 640 SC = New £250 (already had it, can get got £30 second hand now) Corsair H50 CPU Cooler: £50 The case, cooler, PSU and DVD drive you might have already so the cost is quite slim when you add it up. I went for some new bits becasue I could and they would provide a decent platform if I upgraded 6-12 months down the line. I don't think AMD systems are worth it right now either. A Q9*** system second hand would be much better IMO.
OverTheBelow
I bought a Q9550 second hand for £90 bad idea they might of overvolted it reducing it's life
Dup
I bought a Q9550 second hand for £90 bad idea they might of overvolted it reducing it's life There's a lot of protection built into motherboards to prevent retardedness if it ever happened at all. It's overclocked to 3.4 right not with no issues. I also have a 3.6GHz Q6600 in my girlfriends computer that I bought second hand 12 months ago I got them through the trade forums on Overclockers UK and Guru3D, not randoms on eBay. I've never met anyone who has had a chip suddenly die, other components are likely to fail first. If their chip has died, it was becasue they were stupid with overclocking, bent a pin, or their PSU blew and took it out.
Scorpus
Hmmm that's strange. When I bought my Q9550 the Q9400 was only around $30 cheaper. Still I haven't regretted buying it, it's a great chip to have
yoječ
Sure is, but now with sky-high prices (probably because of the introduction of newer sockets - that's the only explanation I can think of) it's just not worth it. Phenom 955/965 offers comparable performance for about half of the price. Seeing as there are new x6 Phenoms to come out in few months (I suppose they'll be low priced too), I really consider doing an upgrade in a year or so. That wouldn't happen on s775
