trip
I decided to switch one of my windows server to a linux server. I'm from a unix (aix) background, and have installed a few flavors of linux in my time. I really don't care what flavor I install on this box, since it will be pulling lite duties.  The box is an old P2 Optiplex.  I first tried Fedora, but no matter what I tried and how many times I reburnt the install disk - it always failed towards the end.  So, now I am onto Ubontu. I ran all the disk checks and everything but during the install it seems to just flash the screen with "30% Detecting File System". Is that normal???? Should I just be patient? The drive light does flicker now and then.  Any ideas or suggestions?  My crappy games at MyCrappyGames.com Free copy of Save The Puppies and Kittens
Star-Lord
How much memory does the P2 box have in total? IIRC... Ubuntu needs at least 512MB to run/install. Not sure? I personally haven't use it in ages.
lordjubblydave
It doesn't sound normal. I installed Re-installed Ubuntu yesterday and that did not happen. It should install quicker than Windows Best person to ask would probably be Sagacious.
trip
512 megs of memory.  But yes, it is not normal. I walked away, showered, did some yard work, changed a few cat boxes, and it is still flashing the entire screen with the 30% detecting file system.  Time to move to plan C. Plan E is finally realizing it is time to get rid of some of the old crappy sh*t I have running. lordjubblydave
LOL, have you tried Ubuntu running off the CD ? Â Does it work that way ? Â Maybe try: Â Damn Small Linux or Puppy if your having troubles.
trip
Currently running the painfully long memory test, while poking around the billion flavors to decide what to do for plan C.  @lordjubblydave, I keep meaning to try that, but always screw myself by electing to try something painfully long like the memory test first. Star-Lord
Â Best person to ask would probably be Sagacious. Agreed. Â However, I was thinking of something? Who knows? If it will make any difference. Try and check the CD for errors (verified its integrity) if it halts in the process as well, then maybe the image is corrupted. Burn a new image and try again. Â Good luck!

I've checked the disk(s) and even picked up a fresh spindle of CDs yesterday to help my cause. It's weird how you almost never use CDs anymore. I've done disk checks, and even have burnt multiple copies of everything.  I have even tried using different harddrives and harddrive combinations.  At one point this box was running redhat, so it is killing me with not being able to get anything installed. I may have to dig out my old redhat disks from work My crappy games at MyCrappyGames.com Free copy of Save The Puppies and Kittens

Ebernanut
Did you get the md5 checksum and use it to make sure the iso wasn't corrupted or incomplete, I've had that problem before and found that the iso didn't download correctly. Â Edit: Here is a link to the page with md5 hashes since I just went looking for it to check the 9.10 version I downloaded last night and realized that they have somewhat hidden the info. Saggy
Try damnsmalllinux, would be more suited to that rig. thanks. Â Even just trying to just run Ubuntu without an install gave me the flashing screen craziness. Â onto damnsmalllinux... If I remember correctly, though, DSL is still on the 2.4 branch and might not be very suitable for server duty. Â Are you attempting to install with the LiveCD? Â You should try the alternate install CD, it will give you much more options for installation and is more of an old-school style of installation. Then you can just choose to install the command line system for Ubuntu ( you might even look into Ubuntu Server Edition, but I don't know diddly about it ) and install your server stuff like that, since you probably don't need a GUI, and could benefit from freeing up those resources anyway. Â As far as what distributions I think you might want to try, I would go with Linux From Scratch or Gentoo with resources being an issue. There's plenty of documentation on how to get them up and running for server use (especially if you're just looking for LAMP), and from then you'd just have lean guts to work with, so consequently it's likely to be more compatible with the older hardware than Ubuntu--they have quite a few newer features enabled in the kernel that could be causing your problem, but I don't know enough about that to say so for certain. Â Â If nothing else, Linux From Scratch has a live CD of its own, and my guess is that if it doesn't work with that, it won't work at all.
