Girish
So, I'm getting myself a laptop next week and I have narrowed down on the Acer AS5740G-6979. It retails at Rs.43,500 which is within my budget. Here are its specs: Intel Core i5-430M 2.26GHz 4 GB DDR3 RAM 500 GB HDD ATi HD 5650 1 GB graphics card Windows 7 HP I need to know what the pros and cons are (if any). I have read a few reviews and this lappy seems very good but I need to be extra sure as I won't be get getting another laptop in the near future so I need to get this one right. Does anyone have this same model or any experiences with Acer that I should be aware of? Ezekiel
Quiteso
Looks like a pretty snazzy laptop! The only thing I can think of right now is, if you're planning on using it for games, it might be worth checking whether the graphics memory is GDDR3, or DDR2. A lot of laptops will use DDR2 graphics memory because it's cheaper, but is slower than GDDR3.
Girish
Good point, Quiteso. I just checked it out and it has GDDR3 memory. It's not really the best mobile GPU out there but it seems to run most games pretty well. Besides, I don't intend to run all games on high settings so it should suffice, I guess. Waddy
I got an Acer last year, all in all I am very happy with it. Its similar spec to yours but GFX are not as good and its running Vista. The biggest problem I had was that windows updates wouldnt install but I formatted and its fine now. Its very fast and the screen is really nice. No major complaints, they are a superb value laptop. Star-Lord
Pros: 8GB maximum memory. Decent specs, non generic hardware, price is not to shabby around $800 USD. Cons: No firewire (But who even uses Firewire) Acer customer support is not the best in IMO. I say go for it... but make sure you consider getting a full extended warranty. Might come in handy. Girish
Acer customer support is not the best in IMO. Any bad personal experience? One reviewer said he had an issue with the laptop but Acer provided him a replacement immediately. As for extended warranty, I'll have to see how much extra I might have to cough up for that and whether I can afford it.

Don't let this stop you from buying from Acer. I just thought I put that out there.
Democrab
Generally, Acer laptops are piss easy to take apart and put back together.. Generally most stuff can be found on eBay, my Acer Aspire One had a broken screen and it took all of 10 minutes to replace the screen.

Don't they have that in the US?
Girish
Sorry for the double post, but I'm really pissed right now. I take 5 days off from work so I get enough time to buy and use my new laptop and guess what, they have run out of stocks. All of them f*cking stores! Now I have to wait until next week or so till new stock arrives. Also, it seems Acer does not provide on-site warranty.
Girish
This model has been discontinued. Change of plans. I'm now thinking about the "Sony Vaio VPCEB16FG". I would like to know how good Sony laptops are and how good is their after sales service.
oldage
http://www.india-server.com/laptops/featur...b16fgb-197.html it says that the video card is dedicated, doesn't that mean you can change it to a better card?
Scorpus
http://www.india-server.com/laptops/featur...b16fgb-197.html it says that the video card is dedicated, doesn't that mean you can change it to a better card? Not necessarily. Dedicated means that the GPU has it's own dedicated RAM, rather than using the system RAM. Generally this means that the GPU is separate from the chipset/CPU but it could still be soldered directly to the motherboard Edited April 18, 2010 by Scorpus
Ronnyboy
Sony's can go both ways. My dad had two for work, and both broke within a year. However, my mom owned a personal one, and it worked like a charm, and really easy to upgrade the HDD on. I've dealt with Sony's customer support, and they are pretty good about replacing stuff.
