[WIP|SCR|SA] Dragonfly Helicopter

Recommended Posts

RanxeroX

Hello Gamers,

After a couple months of working on it in my spare time, I'd like to show you my latest creation. It's a replacement for the Sea Sparrow that I call the Dragonfly.

user posted image

I took on this project for two main reasons: 1) I wanted to do something useful while I learned the ins and outs of 3DS-Max after upgrading from GMax. 2) I thought the original Sea Sparrow was nothing to look at. And yet, it's one of my favorite choppers to buzz around in and harass police with. Plus it can land anywhere.

I personally hadn't seen any other mods for this machine which I thought was overlooked and underappreciated. So I decided to make a vehicle to replace it that looked better, with a modern (even somewhat futuristic) design. The body is loosely modelled after a dragonfly.

The finished product should be available for download in the near future. I've spent the last couple weeks testing it in-game to make sure its appearance rendered the way I want it to look. Right now, I'm working on tweaking the collision and shadow. Once I get rid of a small shadow artifact that seems to pop up at times, it should be done.

For those interested in the details, the model has just under 29,000 triangular polygons. My goal was to keep it under 30K so that it could be used by anyone and to keep size down for several reasons.

The Dragonfly has the following features:

- Primary/secondary color schemes. The floats can be colored independent of the main body color.

- Detailed interior design and textures. Full instrumentation on console & pedestal panels. Extras like seat belts, a fire extinguisher and other accessories.

- Working Omni lights on the belly and tail.

Here are some screenshots to give you a preview of the chopper in the game.

Good job, seems top quality, only the body looks too cartoony. Maybe take a look at original GTA Helicopters (except maverick) and you'll see that they have screws and dirt all over the place.

MI-24 Hind (Real Life Picture) You can see in this pic, the Hind's chassis is made of metal plates and they all are connected with screws. You could implement that in texture and uvmap it for you helicopter wink.gif

P.S. I know, you want it to be futuristic and shiz, but still, it needs to be more realistic and fit San Andreas in some way, and not stand out.

its really nice in places, but i think it does need something else. some texture might help.

im not sure about the bulbous body either, i think it should be a little bit thinner to look like a real dragonfly,

maybe go all crazy insect style and make it really dragonfly-ish by adding reflective scales and joints in its legs and some big googly eyes as part of the cockpit glass smile.gif

if you dont want to go too insect style, some screws/rivets and maybe some panels textured on, as kowaah said, would make a big difference..

maybe some filthy paint near the exhausts too (if it has any) that always adds some nice realism..

keep up the good work though, its good to see somebody designing their own stuff sigh.gifcookie.gifcookie.gif

edit- also, some diffuse lights would be cool. red on left body, green on the right body (and i think a white one above the tail rotor).

I dont know how to do flashy ones, but always-lit diffuse lights are simple enough to add

Kowaah: I thought of doing panels and screws but, at the time, I was unsure of how I would be able to implement them while still being able to use the primary/secondary colors. I think I could do it with alpha-maps. Plus I wanted to keep the body clean - so no dirt smile.gif! Bear in mind too that this is my first scratch-made project for public release. The couple other things I've done were only for my own enjoyment.

Chong: I suppose I could have made the body thinner but it would have then looked out of sync with the cockpit which needs to be the size it is so people fit comfortably along with the other interior parts. If it goes too far, it'll look like a big head on a stick body. I guess it depends too if you meant thinner (less bulbous) just in width not height. That's something that could probably be done.

As for going all insectoid, no, I don't want to go that far. I just wanted to use the dragonfly for a style guide. As for panel/rivets, I'll try it out and see how it looks. And yes, it does have exhausts. There are two ports on top, behind the rotor assembly.

I'm not sure about implementing diffuse lights... I already have two working omni lights that come on at night. They are placed and colored exactly like the original Sea Sparrow and I think the Mavericks and Raindance have them in the same spots too. Only the planes have the 3 lights you describe? It would be nice to have the instrument panels light up at night though! That's something I'm pretty clueless about implementing on a vehicle.

So, thanks for your comments and suggestions guys! I'll take your ideas back to the drawing board and see what I can do...

Just implement them in texture and it won't have any problems to load the in Prim/Sec colours. Just like GTA SA cars have the 'vehiclegrunge256' texture from vehicles.txd - they have it on body and it's colored in needed colors still.

There's got to be more to it than that though... I've just been wrangling with 3ds-Max trying to get the textures to appear without destroying the body color and it just won't do it. I tried adding a .tga file with transparency to the primary color material and no amount of playing with the settings seems to work. I finally just tried exporting what I had done to see what the outcome would be and the game wouldn't even spawn the chopper. When I looked at it in GGMM after, the whole body except the textures was transparent. The question is where do you add the texture? Do you add it to the primary color material or create another? How does it have to be setup to display properly?

I think I need some sort of step-by-step tutorial because I'm missing something... Thanx anyway though!

..Do you add it to the primary color material...

Yes, this one. And if it doesn't shows up ingame even after that, you maybe exported it as not-SA dff. (I don't really know how 3ds max is sorted, i'm using Zmod2)

Okay, so I took the suggestions by Kowaah and Chong McBong, went back and did some more work. I've got the chopper fully textured on the exterior. It now has the rivets, panels/doors and decals that I should probably have added in the first place. It definitely looks better with the extra touches. Here are some sample pics:

Let me know what you think of the changes! nervous.gif

I still have a bit of work to do to get all of the texturing to show up properly and get rid of the annoying shadow artifact but it should be done soon. So, if you're interested, I plan to put it up on Gta Garage when it's ready - you can look for it there.

Thanx alot for the compliment... I am still tweaking it to get it just right BTW! I've since fixed the shadow problem (3 faces were inverted - lord knows how!) and have added a reflection map to the exterior. After a couple more minor things, it will be done and ready for uploading.

If, by "ages ago", you mean almost a week smile.gif then yeah... I don't know what the holdup is. I submitted it last Tuesday and it's still awaiting approval. In fact, I was just about to check again, and if it still wasn't approved, then I was going to find out if there's a problem. Hopefully, things will work out soon and you'll be able to get ahold of it there!

Can you convert this to IV?... this would be amazing there too... This mod makes me wanna install SA again tounge.gif

It's very doubtful that I can convert it to GTA IV for 2 reasons: 1) I used 3ds-Max to create my model and doing anything for that game requires a registered, paid version of ZModeler2. I'm not going to spend the cash for one conversion. 2) GTA IV doesn't have any choppers like it to replace. You'd have to give up the Maverick (or whatever it's called, my memory's fuzzy on the game).

I really appreciate the enthusiasm though! And hey, who knows what the future holds...

Well I'd gladly give up the maverick for this tounge.gif ... and would you give permission to someone else to convert it? I myself have no idea how, but lots of people do if you are willing to let them convert it.
