gtathebest4ever
I didn't want to put this in random questions because I need an answer quickly. I recently bought a game from Steam and now I have reinstalled my system, thus deleting the game. Now I know it's still in my games and I can download it and "have" it again. But, my download limit is very small and I don't want to spend it all on a game. So, is there any way I can just use the key from Steam and install the game from a disc? Because I don't remember there being a key involved when I installed from steam, as it automatically downloads and installs without asking a question. Andrew
If you have the game on a disk then steam will recongise the new files and only download updates.
dice
When buying of the steam store, you don't get a cd key afaik. If you have (in your case a non legit?) version of the game on a disk and you can only acquire the legit copy via downloading from steam, then try and install the game in C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\<account name>\<game name; e.g team fortress 2>\ so that the game files are in the \<account name>\<game name> folder. Note that this may not work, but It's worth a shot. And I also don't know if it matters how the game name folder is named, but in my case, all games have small capital letters. gtathebest4ever
Hmm I posted another reply here but it didn't show up... Anyway, yes, it's a non-legit version but I just wanted to use the data from it so I wouldn't have to download it. My friend bought a key from a site that only sells legit keys but requires you to have the disc. And it worked with the same disc I have right now so I was really hoping I cold just find a key from my steam game somewhere. I want to try what you suggested (putting the game files in the directory...) but I'm kinda afraid Steam will figure out the disc isn't legit and lock the legit game for good. Is this possible?
