Jayd101
I was watching a show on TV and they said that New Zealand and australia are thinking about making NZ part of au as in making NZ a state of au. I don't know about you, BUT I DONOT want this to happen, I mean giving up our New Zealand National icons like the Kiwi and All blacks rugby team. I don't want that to happen. DemonKing
That's pretty retarded to be quite honest, being NZ is a good 3 hour plane journey over a large sea area, yet I've seen stranger things happen.

Nah, it's not for millatary needs or anything, they just want NZ to be part of their country, which would suck to be honest, I'd hate being called an Aussie when I'm a true Kiwi, and lots of australian coming to New Zealand and probably NZers will inherate thier accent, I would NOT like that (no offense). Jay
Ehhh. If you think about it, Australia isn't even a part of Australia until it becomes a republic. All this talk is just hot air. Australia and NZ interact like they're the one nation as it is. The only thing separating the two is different coloured stars and the Tasman Sea. Oh, and different treaties with the USA. afaik, you don't need a passport to travel between the countries (or soon you won't), before Australia was federated, NZ was given the opportunity to federate with all the other states but opted out. They speak the same language, play the same sports, have the same government structure, drive the same cars on the same side of the road, basically the same flag, fight the same wars under the same circumstances, and share the same air force, and above all, people not from Aus or NZ always confuse famous NZers as Australians. In a way, NZ is already part of Australia, whether they like it or not. Edited March 14, 2010 by Jay

Blind Joe Death
It's about bloody time, maaate. Most of those damn Kiwi's are already living of 'er anyway. [/bogan] No but this has been going around for years now, it will never happen. I don't think anybody wants this to happen either, on both sides. There would be major protests. The only thing that doesn't make me totally against this is the amazing sporting teams we would form, especially in the rugby union. My God, we'd be unstoppable. You don't need a visa or anything like that when you go between the two countries. But it was talked about (much like linking the two countries completely). Apparently if you moved to Aus from NZ before 2001, you were granted automatic permanent residency.

Jay
Massively Ignorant American Alert: Isn't Australia still part of England? In the sense that the Queen is our head of state, yes. There is a position in Australia in lieu of the Queen (the Governor General) which has a largely ceremonial role, but has the power to dissolve government at any time (which has happened). On one hand, it is a handy safeguard for situations where supply bills are being blocked in the Senate, but on the other it flies in the face of democracy when the highest position in the country is not elected by the people. I'm inclined to call a spade a spade, but even though officially we are both still colonies, both Aus and NZ act as independent nations regardless, and have done since World War II. Sauron
Aren't New Zealand and Australia moving towards each other? Yes that is true Sauron, New Zealand is moving towars Aus a few centimeters every year, and if there are earthquakes (Like one in NZ last year) it can push it more towards there by an inch or something it said on the news. Jay
Who told you this? Some guys It's in the semantics, after 2001 NZers needed to actually apply for permanent residency to get welfare benefits, those who were there beforehand were granted them automatically from pre-existing treaties. Ari Gold
In all seriousness, does it really matter? Culturally we're both similar, so in the end it's not going to be such a huge farce, like if America suddenly was to annex Iceland or some sh*t. And if I'm not mistaken, New Zealand basically had the same status as the colonies in Australia pre-1901 and was even offered a position to join the Federation but declined. Typhus
Joining countries up is stupid. Just like the whole idea of the United Kingdom, I'm English, not British. Just as the Scots and Welsh proudly protect their own identity. You can't have unity at the expense of identity. Because it will only be the illusion of unity and create long-lasting bitterness and distrust. Just let New Zealand remain as it is.
Svip
Massively Ignorant American Alert: Isn't Australia still part of England? Also, England is part of the United Kingdom and not a sovereign state any more, Great Britain have existed since 1707. But Australia is part of the United Kingdom much like Canada is. And to all the people thinking that distance is a problem; did that stop the British Empire? Did that stop any empire? 'Oh blimey, that new world is pretty far away, chap. Perhaps we just ought to stay here in London. A spot of tea, old sport? *cleans monocle*'
Iminicus
New Zealand Population = 4.3 million Australia Population = 20 + million Combined Population = 24+ million The economic benefits alone to both NZ and Aussie is worth it alone. You get rid of two currencies, which trade at roughly 1:1. You create a bigger buying market for importable goods ie video games, TVs, DVDs, computer components, etc. Then, you have social benefits that trickle across the ditch. NZ is basically an Aussie state without officially recognizing it is. I propose NZ and Aussie unite to be Australasia. We also fold Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, Tuvulu and the rest of the outer pacific islands and then become Oceania. This will increase the economic power of each country significantly. Each country can keep their flag as it will become their 'state' flag. Each country can keep their National sports teams and provisional, etc teams. The only thing we will have in common will be currency, government ( Federal, each will maintain local Governments ), passports, citizenships, several other key things. Basically, set up the EU but in the Pacific region and without all the stupid EU trade laws and sh*t.
makeshyft
Ok, de-bunch your panties. When Australia underwent Federation in 1901, a place in the federation was offered to New Zealand. Obviously, NZ declined the invitation and became its own nation. From time-to-time, surveys are done asking citizens of either country if they think this would be a good idea in today's world. That's all. There are no plans whatsoever to unite the two countries.
Kora
My only concern is how Maori and Polynesian 'politics' would fit into Australia. Sure, there's a number and a half of them over there on the West Island, but they don't share the same status as they do in New Zealand (e.g. the Treaty of Waitangi and the Maori's subsequent land claims). Economically though, it'd benefit New Zealand. With all the Kiwis crossing the ditch leaving the country to be run by transsexual women , a unified economy could be a cheap way to get the 'goodies' back. But meh, I couldn't care less.
