The-King
I personally have a love affair with Steam, the fact that no matter where I go all my games will always be a click and download away is reassuring as f*ck. Hell, I didn't even buy my copy of Unreal 3, my friend gave it to me and I now have unlimited access to it via Steam. I just wish EA would sell more of their games through Steam, considering their close relationship with Valve that is. What I wouldn't do to be able to download The Sims 3 off Steam without having to deal with that DRM bullsh*t. |PropagandaIncorporated:|: Steam:|: DeviantArt:|: Last.FM|
ScrewedYou
We understand the practice of business, we get it. It's just that I don't know of any other companies that do things like this. Like I said, if you have go to buy a used Chevy from the used car lot on the corner GM doesn't come after you for any fees to be able to drive it. If I buy an old Craftsman saw at a garage sale Craftsman doesn't charge me anything extra just to use it. It's a bunch of crap. My friend works for ThreeD Games and he said that it's a terrible idea and he thinks that used game sales would take a big hit and that the money the companies think they'll make will actually be a fraction of what they want it to be. Also, someone mentioned homes with multiple consoles, like mine. I have a 120g and 40g ps3. With today's foolish lack of 2 player gaming on 1 game/tv on just about every game it could get expensive to play with a friend or family member in your house. Also, some people just can't afford to buy things new. That's what the used market is for, for those who don't make the kind of money others do. Some people, especially these days with a recession and with the high cost of every stinking thing you look at just can't afford to pay for brand new stuff. I know a couple of guys who have bought everything they have used over the years. They wouldn't have been able to buy nearly any of it had they bought it new. It just reaffirms my belief that religion (separate argument indeed) and money are the roots of all evil.
LittleBlueTroll
They do it because they know they can get away with it, Yeah it sucks dick, but honestly what can we do? If they eventually ban buying second hand games, a few people will stop gaming in protest (maybe) But the other billions of gamers will just buy the games new, The big companies will always milk us for every penny because they know they can. ScrewedYou
They know they can because consumers won't take a stand against it. They'll just bend over and say, ok, shove it in dry.

BigNekkidSnake
Video games are defined as "intellectual property". It's not the same as owning a piece of land, a car or a tool set where your rights of ownership would be far more tangible. With intellectual property you are, more or less, just a licensee of what is owned by another. The rules are that way as to protect the 'creators', so that their rights of ownership aren't exploited. Yeah and if anyone ever read a EULA that pops up when you install PC games its says you not allowed to edit the contents yet there are sh*t tons of Modification websites for almost every PC game. Game devs most of the time don't give a sh*t about that because it doesn't make money unless the mods are being sold. I see games as "fair game" I can do what I want with it cause I paid for it and f*ck what anyone thinks. Gamestop and the other corporate VG stores piss me off with their sh*tty trade-in rates which I was I don't sell them there but if I see a game I want that is even a tiny bit cheaper I'm buying it. If they want to stop losing money they should stop raping everyones wallet with their huge price tags and inabillity to fix games that have broken features such as multiplayer (which prevents many from buying them) and/or rehasing the same f*cking games over and over. I also look at it this way and some one makes a game where most of the game content is DLC that costs $10 for something like 4 maps or a 3 hour or less campaign chapter I don't care if they made their money off me buying their game cause their gonna make x2 as much on the DLC we all shell out for.
