annMarcus
It's been just over three years since I got my trusty PC with a Core Duo processor, and it's served me well, but in the next month I am having a think about buying a whole new machine. It's not specifically to play this game, but with EFLC being released next month, I want to be sure my new rig will run my favourite game fine - I'm also looking forward to the prospect of being able to crank up the graphics settings. The hardware I'm thinking of getting shouldn't in theory be a problem. My current PC can cope fine on medium to high settings, and the one I'm going to buy will be much better. Although I haven't finalised my decision, I'm currently thinking of the following components: an i7 960 (3.2 GHZ), 6GB DDR3 Ram, and a GTX 280 2GB graphics card. As I say, this shouldn't have any trouble coping - in theory! However, we all know GTA IV is a very fussy game. If anyone has a similar spec to this already, I'd be keen to know what performance you can get, and if there are any issues. My bigger concern is software. Having looked through this section, I've noticed a lot of people with high end PCs are suffering from poor performance, and it appears there is one common factor - Windows 7. Again, if anyone can offer any advice on this issue it would be most welcome. Ideally I want to get the most current opperating system - but I'm thinking either getting the Ultimate Edition (from what I understand this allows you to run application in XP mode), or a second hard drive that has Windows XP installed. Also, I'm guessing I ought get the 64 bit version to take advantage of new hardware - but does whether you have this or the 32bit version influence game performance? Comments are most welcome - even if it is to tell me (politely) I'm an idiot and all my concerns are unfounded! Snip. No advertising. -Az Edited March 15, 2010 by Azazel
GTA3Freak-2001
Windows 7 really is only a issue if you have older hardware and even then some people disagree so no questions get Win 7 and forget XP for a new system. As for 64 bit, yes you need it since otherwise your 6gb won't be used as 32bit OS's can only use roughly 3gigs. I think getting Ultimate isn't needed, I have not found any issue so far with only having Win 7 Home Premium as far as compatiliity goes. As for your planned new system, sounds great but I'd change the video card to something from ATI like the 5850 or 5870 which outperform a 280 and offer DX11. Even the new NVIDIA cards are set to still be outperformed by the ATI cards.

Jimbatron
I7 960 - waste of moneyGTX280 2GB - NOW, you are trolling. This is a troll thread. Erm, this is a thread I posted earlier word for word (not sure why annMarcus has dug it up) - and it is not a troll thread. I'm not an expert on computers so please don't be rude. Thanks to GTA3Freak-2001 for the helpful comments. I did think about ATI due to the direct x 11 compatibility. My choice of the GTX 285 2GB was due to wanting the extra memory, and all the ATI cards with this much were significantly more expensive (£100+ extra in the UK). As for Jigglyass' comment about the I7 960 being a waste of money, I might not need it now, but I believe it will extend the useful life of the PC going forward, particularly if I decide to over-clock it. I have the spec above now, and it runs GTA IV maxed out on all settings at a solid 55-60 FPS. The only noticable problems are those introduce by the fifth patch (the floating textures). The resource usage is just over 1600mb (one of my reasons for wanting that 2GB of graphics memory). If I do say so myself the game looks totally awesome now. In single player there is also noticably more traffic around which I was not expecting (I'm guessing this is due to the extra system ram?)
