Valve want to make their games a service rather than a product and prefer to simply give us free updates all the time, similar to what they've done with TF2. It could be a looong time away but I'm sure it will eventually. In the meantime there's plenty of other games for them to focus on. I don't really need to mention what. I got to the bit where you need the laser turret when your shut in that room next to the target practice , but I lost the laser and I can't get back up , plus it autosaved. I mean, sure HL2 and TF2 aren't exactly the SAME same engine, TF2 and HL2 run on basically the exact same build of Source, like in the same way CoD WaW runs on essentially the exact same engine as CoD 4. There are some minor differences obviously but the games are still very compatible. Same with Portal 1. If you put all of the level data from HL2 into Portal, you can play through HL2 with the portal gun (albeit, with some glitches). Valce have said they're not working on a new engine, things are perfectly fine for them staying with Source and constantly refining it and adding features. As you said yourself, The Source engine used on the first release of Half-Life 2 is different to the first release of Team Fortress 2. Valve like to spend more of their time doing this miracle thing where they actually make sure the engine works, gets the most out of your PC's power and can still downscale itself to work on older computers. Not the puzzles nor the gameplay, just the superb story and the entertaining characters. Played Portal 1 today and just finished it in under 2 hours! 2 freakin hours! Did not enjoy it to be honest.
