That_Guy28
I put some files I need into a password protected rar file in order to save hard drive space. Unluckily I forgot my password. Is there a free program that will hack into the rar file and disable the password?

james227uk
- Offtopic - With programs like that around I don't get the point of adding a password to a RAR archive
That_Guy28
OMFG! This is stupid! 45630 hours remaining! I can't wait 5 years. I was thinking of more of a program that would hack into the rar file and delete the password. Not one that would try to guess the password. thx anyway though. dice
That's impossible. The only way to crack a rar file is with the brute force method
Wolf68k
That's impossible. The only way to crack a rar file is with the brute force method Or to know if it's a dictionary word and how many letters - Offtopic - With programs like that around I don't get the point of adding a password to a RAR archive Because as That_Guy28 just found out, with a brute force attack, it'll take about 5 years. @That_Guy28 If you know anything about what the password might be then it would make it easier to crack. But if you don't know squat then yeah a brute force trying every possible combination there is between 1 and 127 characters (according to the WinRAR's help file is the max length) then yeah it's gonna take a very long time. Fozzy Fozborne
I'm pretty sure that software will be intelligent enough to start with one character and work it's way up rather than just try a random combination. Considering no one in their right mind would use a 127 character password it should take considerably less time. Consider running the program over night. If the password is 12 characters that's only 9774779120406941925376 combos vs 1.04 x10 ^222 which is what it's quoting for 5 years (and I can see why). Saggy
I have some experience making my own little rar brute forcer. Except mine only runs at 20 tires a second. Anyway, I only bring it up because I've managed to crack only four letter passwords with it. Depending on how fast that program runs ( i.e. if it can do even 1000 a second ) I would say you'd have a good possibility of finding it if you manipulate the length and charset enough. I would offer you mine, but it sucks and only works on Linux. It has left me with a good bit of knowledge about brute forcing and how long it takes, and I would say you should probably just give up if you need the space that bad. Even if that program was trying billions of passwords a second ( which it probably is) I think 5 years is actually a really modest estimate for a exhaustive search. 9774779120406941925376 / 3 000 000 000 000 / 86 400 / 365 = 103 years at 3 billion tries a second. There is always the possibility that you won't have to wait that long though. You could find it in the first day, or a month in, etc. So if I were you, I'd use this program and its saving feature. It's a lot like mine, only much more configurable and probably a lot faster. If it comes down to a pinch and you need the harddrive space I'd bag it. zlatan24
I put some files I need into a password protected rar file in order to save hard drive space. Unluckily I forgot my password. Is there a free program that will hack into the rar file and disable the password? Exist some rar files on my computer, which were crashed some days before. I came to the conclusion to use the Google and was lucky. I found tool, which helped me promptly and would be able to help in any issue - recovery-rar.
