SA won't start in Windows 7

Recommended Posts

GTA SA just won't seem to load after I've installed it. It works just fine when I install it, and everything looks normal.

When I try to starting, no matter if I start it through the desktop shortcut or the menu, the same thing happen.

What happens is that the screen flashes black, a message appears in the lower right corner saying that it's changing the colorscheme to Windows 7 Basic, then it flashes black again and then the loading cursor disappears.

I have tried almost every compatibility, I've downgraded it ver.1 and upgraded it again, reinstalled it, yet nothing seems to work.

I've even tried to install the DirectX that comes with the game.

My SA CD is legally bought and it's the European version. I believe it is version 1.01.

I'm running it on Windows Home Edition (Or whatever it is called)

I've been searching the web for help for an hour and I'm about to give up.

I find no clear reasons. Only people saying that "I've downloaded ver.1 and it works for me."

I'd really appreciate some help with this problem.

And yeah, I tried searching to see whether someone already had posted a topic like this, but the search thing didn't want to work.

First, please post the required information when posting a Troubleshooting topic here:

Before you post a topic, please read the pinned bug lists/fixes. It is likely that you're not the first person to encounter a problem, and we may have found a solution already. In addition to these pinned topics, please utilize the forum search engine. adamcs has produced an extremely helpful guide which explains the finer points of successful searching, accessible here.

If all of the above is no help, you'll need to post a new topic. Please provide useful topic titles. "Help" or "problem" give us no insight into the problem - every topic in the Troubleshooting forum will no doubt entail a problem seeking help!

To get the most amount of help for your problem, we need as many details as we can get about your system's specs. Therefore it is highly suggested (read: demanded) that you provide:

• What platform: PC, PS2, or X-Box

• What version number of GTA: SA

• What CPU and its speed

• How much RAM, also what kind (DDR, SDRAM) and speed

• What video card and what vram?

• Which version of Windows (and any service packs)

• Which DirectX version and driver version

• What sound card and driver version

• History: Is this your first install? Did it work once before? Anything that is relevant.

• Screenshots, if applicable. This is especially necessary with display issues which can be explained far easier by use of visual aids.

• Above all else, a detailed description of your problem. Give as much information as possible! Keep it relevant, though. We don't need a fifty-page printout from some diagnosis program. Usually the above prompts will suffice.

This will help solve the problem better. Vista SP 2 and windows 7 comes with DX 11, so when you installed DX 9.0c(the one that comes on the game disc), that may be part of your problem. Also, Are ALL your drivers up to date for your Video card, DX, Sound card, etc.? Also, there is no Retail V1.01 of the game-Only V1 or V2 or V3(the Steam/D2D version)-1.01 was the patch released by Rockstar to remove the "Hot Coffee" from V1 games.

Just a heads up, to find the information needed for the stuff listed above, go to: Start, type in DXDIAG in the search box and press Enter, then the first screen will tell you the RAM, Processor and Speed, etc., The Display tab will show you everything about the Video card, The Sound tab shows everything about the Sound card, etc.

As i write this, im using windows 7 which is what I play gta on I just installed and played and also downgraded. This is really strange to see this happening. Make sure your drivers are working, you have a new version of direct x and that there are no files missing.

Not so Strange if you have Never played and saved the game.

That file (GTA_SA.set) is created (everytime) when you save. It holds the settings of video/audio and adjustments to the game key assignments.

Then again, if you have played the game and saved it.

Use search to find it use: *.set (asterick dot 'set') If it exists and has improper OS settings that could be the problem.

I haven't been able to play the game at all. It won't even start. And I haven't been able to start it at all after the game was installed.

What graphics chipset do you have? Most people seem to suggest viewing it by using WindowsKey+R, then opening 'dxdiag'.

@lil weasel: Yes.

@GTA!!!: As I've already typed in the main post of this thread, I've already tried running it in every possible compability mode, more than once. So no, it will not work.

@NTAuthority: Nvidia GeForce G210M, I think. Not sure if that's the right one though.

by any chance do you have quad core processor? If so I remember a posting that said to set them so that only 0 was active for the game.

and if it is a AMD dual processor there is a 'fix' at the AMD web site that allows the game to play.

That should be working by default. Since this issue seems to occur quite early at the game start and could be caused by the disc check, perhaps try running the game with a no-DVD crack? You can easily find one on Google using search terms you can come up with yourself.

Also, if lil weasel says anything about cracks being bad for the game, don't worry - they're not. wink.gif

Ignore this. They are bad around here.

Even if they are the solution to a person's problem? I'm at least not linking directly to one, just providing hints to one. Especially since the game contains a lot of checks linked in to the no-DVD check, and most GPU related crashes occur during frontend initialization, it's likely that a no-DVD crack would solve this problem.

Well, it's not that my computer has any problems reading disks, since I do play a lot of other games using the disks.

And I really don't think it seem like a that good of an idea to download a no DVD-crack.

The only one I've ever downloaded was crap and didn't work, and I've hear that most are more or less useless.

I still think the game should be able to launch when I use the CD. I don't think a crack will help me with this problem.

Well, the protection itself might have some issues. Remember Starforce? It also breaks on newer systems/Windows versions. Now, SA's protection should still work on Win7, but it might be something other on your system that breaks it. I've seen this issue occur somewhat often when experimenting with using virtual drives for games, before using cracks.

Did I miss it?

Argh, I'm sorry!

I'm no good at this stuff, when it comes to what processors I have and such.

And yes, I believe it is a DVD, my bad.

Well, here goes again:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

NVIDIA G210M 512MB

Processor: Pentium Dual-Core CPU 2.10GHz

4GB RAM

Legally bought DVD of the game, version 1.2, I think.

http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtop...st&p=1059844411 - if you don't want to try a crack, try this. It appears to solve similar initialization issues to yours. smile.gif
