Twang of Calimari

I don't know if this really fits in here, but a while back I was binging on some Buddhist chant, and really dug some stuff like this by Imee Ooi.

And then there's Organic Stereo, who I believe are Japanese or some sort of Asian instrumental band. I couldn't find this track on Youtube, so I uploaded it myself. Enjoy:

@Twang: "Chant of Metta"?! Have you been crouching by my bathroom door with a tape recorder again?

And on a serious tip the "Everything in Between" description in the intro allows us some flexibility without having to be post natzis in this topic as far as genres are concerned.

We're just going for a generally Chill relaxing vibe and a diverse range of sounds in here so a lot of things are permissable. A Buddhist Chant and some obvious World Music are certainly welcome.

A nice tune by Diplo of Hollertronix (also one of the main people behind Santogold's sound). Anything named after my hometown state can't be too bad.

More or less this is just an intro to the album but I think it sounds pretty damn fresh.

Morcheeba's really hit or miss for me but they really took it back to the basics on this one, very enjoyable.

Good message in here as well if you pay attention to the words but who does that anymore, right? rolleyes.gif

Slightly Stoopid, sadly as about as close to Sublime as we'll ever get again.

I think it's probably both, they seem to be a pretty politically conscious band.

Yes, indeed.

Lets roll into the evening with a few more smooth grooves for your listening plea-sha. *spoken in Quiet Storm style DJ voice*

A definite Session groove. inlove.gif

I really like the nondescript vocals that sort of ease out of the background a few minutes into this and just float through the whole track.

Kleerup's production on this is phenom.

Maybe we could add a bit of a tropical vibe to this 'ere lounge, eh?

I like me some Slightly Stoopid. 'Specially on the beach in the summer, chilling with some friends and smokin' it up.

This one has guest vocals from one of my favorites, G. Love.

I love this one. Just so laid back.

I know - Green Day. Practically a sin to mention the band on this site. But, no vocals on this track and it's very, very mellow.

And I'll throw in my favorite Sublime track for good measure.

Definitely feelin' that eclectic, laid back SoCal sound. My previously mentioned cousin, Paul is pretty much the biggest Green Day fan I know so you get a pass on what is all ready a really decent instrumental anyways.

Sweden's had a real music Renaissance in the last few years, just a really original sound every time a new artist breaks.

Enjoy the semi-traditional animation on this.

I don't think anyone's quite captured that classic disco sound quite as well as Moloko did with this track a few years back.

Some of their other offerings are really f*cking bizarre, completely different than this.

Talented DJ and Composer, did the original score for the video game, Infamous.

Highly experimental, very diverse in their range of song styles. Cand if you're looking in you should check these guys out.

I find this to be quite chill-ish and experimental, considering it's from the lead singer of Stone Temple Pilots. I can sense some influences from Pink Floyd, David Bowie, XTC, etc. in here.

Sorry, I'm late.

Anyone who's known me from my more memorable era here should know I'm a HUGE fan of Depeche Mode. For being a nearly 30-year-old band, they're not as well known as your more successful longevity phenomenons such as the Rolling Stones, Duran Duran, U2, etc. However, along the way they've revolutionized the act of using a synthesizer like no other.

For what I'm sure will be an introduction to the band for many of you, I'll present to you their live rendition of "Wrong", a single from their latest album "Sounds of the Universe" (2009); also included is "Peace", the second single from the album. I'm not too high on "Peace" but I can't find "Wrong" from World Cafe by itself. Sure, I could embed an album version of the song but you won't get the "wall of synth" effect as you would from hearing it live.

Speaking of, I saw them live in August at Madison Square Garden and they blew me away.

Without wasting anymore time, here goes - hope you enjoy.

For anyone interested a more detailed yet brief summary of the band, here's what is available on Wikipedia.

Depeche Mode (IPA: [dɛˈpɛʃ], de-PESH) are an English electronic band who formed in 1980, in Basildon, Essex. The group's original line-up consisted of Dave Gahan (lead vocals), Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, vocals, chief songwriter after 1981), Andrew Fletcher (keyboards) and Vince Clarke (keyboards, chief songwriter 1980–81). Vince Clarke left the band after the release of their 1981 debut album, and was replaced by Alan Wilder (keyboards, drums, production) with Gore taking over songwriting. Wilder left the band in 1995 and since then Gahan, Gore, and Fletcher have continued as a trio.

Depeche Mode are one of the most successful, influential and longest-lived bands from the early 1980s. They have had forty-eight songs in the UK Singles Chart and #1 albums in UK, US and throughout Europe. According to EMI, Depeche Mode have sold over 100 million albums and singles worldwide[1], making them the most successful electronic music group in music history.[2][3] Q Magazine calls Depeche Mode "The most popular electronic band the world has ever known".[4]

-- Edit --

I've decided to also include a live video performance of "Wrong" in HD. Don't mind the guitarist's hair too much, he tends to have a flare for the unusual.

Yea, Depeche are one of the few New Wave/Synth bands barring The Cure that went on to continue their career and have mega success beyond the 80's, have to give them credit. Great HD quality on that live performance.

This and Personal Jesus are two particular favs.

Nice easy flutes on this, awesome to get so many top notch people on one track.

Just listened to this and really liked it.

There's no question in Depeche Mode's success. Especially! being that they've remained on the same small label from the beginning - Mute Records (This attributed to their lack of fame early on - and nowadays labels get bought out so I believe they're in the process of one of those aspects of the music industry). Had they've gone the U2 route, who knows where they'd be right now. I know I probably wouldn't like them as much.

And who can hate the band responsible for..

AWESOME arrangement they've done with the song this time around.

I dig me some of the Mode. icon14.gif

Mastodon is one of my favorite bands, and they have a few songs that would fit here. This one is off of their sophomore album, Leviathan, which is arguably their least 'chill' album (they are a heavy metal band, after all). This song, however, is probably their most chill song.

Yea, it's funny how a hard rockin band will turn around and occasionally suprise you with something light.

Trying to remember some of the things I was catching on the way home from Austin tonight...

Mos dabbles in rock from time to time, it's kind of hit or miss for me but I really liked this.

You may recognize this as the prominant sample on a famous Tribe Called Quest track. If not, grow some hair on your nuts.

Good song to play for your girl. Short, you may want to put it on repeat 3 or 4 times or up until thinking of Rosie O'Donnell in a baseball jersey and black satin panties no longer works.

One more set before I crash for the evening, 3 bowls in, feelin' extra thin.

Another track by the incomperable Fleet Foxes, this one sounds very different than anything else on the album.

Personal Fav from Vice City, immediate nolstalgia any time I hear it.

Don't mind me, I'll put my clothes back on once this track is done.

I think this will fit nicely here. I've only discovered this track a little while ago but it instantly made its way to my iPod and became a prime track for a relaxing drive around.

We express the same things but with different words

We acknowledge the same curve and those might-have-heareds

Just like the last line you draw to remind of past-time

A fast-winded feeling of freedom pleased to be recognized

And i can hear your doctors calling from here, saying:

Killed by his independecy and akilles-heel

Cuz he armed himself with stealthy mass-appeal.

Wheres my muse, wheres my muse

It feels like every word slipping through my mouth has been used

Staggering like the old man feeding the dirt

With my glass eye reflecting all the things that iv learned

A windowless frame in a transparent room

Flilling up cracks with plastic assumes

Shapeshift

A nuance

A venue

Chrous:

Dont stop dreaming cuz this aint over

Wreck of you life, aim til you get sober

Dont stop dreaming cuz this aint over

My friend

I wrestle myself as I walk along the weary-

motely watching i find myself staring

building up an empire, of my great desire

while fumes/fuel from my thought process take me higher

Higher and higher, I aint stoppin there,

My avalanche of color starts over there,

And Ive got the solitary key to go through.

Grey and delicious

The traps can be so vicious

Prepare for the ultimate takedown.

Part time experience

Might save you from deliverance,

But will it serve the greater cause?

Chrous:

Dont stop dreaming cuz this aint over

Break up your life, until you get sober

Dont stop dreaming cuz this aint over

My friend

-Edit-

Included lyrics. There's a pleasant truth to the words of this song.

I really didn't know what to expect when I clicked on that but that was very dope, lyrically reminded me of that spoken word track, Frequency I laid down a while back.

Well let's get the day started, shall we?

More on a roots reggae tip but Steel Pulse always puts me in a good mood despite the fact that 90% of their songs are about social injustice.

I effing love this track and project but I'm sad to say, the more I read, the more I think this will end up being a one shot concept album.

Awesome, rare album, very fortunate to have it in my collection.

One of my all time favorites.

Mine too, without question.

Love that Illedelph sound too.

@Parky: Sometimes it's more about the "mood" than the tempo, we've had a few slightly more upbeat things make their way in here. (i.e. Moloko - Bring it Back, Passion Pit -Sleepyhead) so thanks for droppin that off, really liked the opening strings on that.

I'm in some smoked out Rumpo in Portland getting ready to drive over a random ped.

There's a lot of quiet power in this track.

Played this and Fortunate at my wedding.

And I thought this might fit.

It does. The cool, creepy video that goes with it showing a black haired Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Scott Weiland doing an excessive ammount of his his weird Heroin come-down dance stretches is posted at Youtube, I was watching it 2 days ago.

@Cand: Definitely good message, something we should all be reminded of from time to time.

@Vanilla: Good classic, diverse choices. Glad to see people finally getting over their "is this cool and faggy enough for meta's music thread" type concerns and just posting the music they like that relaxes them.

@Wingman: Possibly the only person ever who stepped into the thread with an original Q-13 VIP card.

Here, I'll post the gayest song I currently enjoy this side of a David Bowie's, Let's Dance.

This is one catchy ma'f*ckin song but not one chick appears in the video so draw your own conclusions.

Great track, cool video.

Love this, who writes slightly patriotic songs about their hometowns anymore and then proceeds to make them awesomely convincing?

A fat girl with a baby doll face, that's who. BigUp, London.

Yeah, that video does have a weird vibe to it. Especially those thinks that looked like Teletubbies. Not the video I imagined, but good. Sarah Michelle Gellar was quite hot in it as well.

And I agree with your other statement. Just post songs that relax you, and when you post them we get a chance to listen and see if we get the same affect, or you we might end up liking the song itself.

@ Stefche - Yep, I played that one A LOT in GTA3. Fun track.

Yes, this song has been adored by millions as it is and will forever be known as Crockett's theme from Miami Vice.

However, if you can totally ignore the visuals, memories and the origin of the track, it really is brilliant. We all should know of the original, so I'll post up the 20th anniversary mix.

For the same reasons, I especially love this early Depeche Mode track.

And a very good current remix to top it off.

Yep, I'm a fanatic but the music has stood by me through so many points of my life, it's hard to forget. I've managed a full year of not listening to a single Depeche Mode song but when their latest album was coming close to a release, it all came back to me.

Again, just songs that relax me. As VanShake said, we're not trying to convert anyone. You can like it or not, it's all good.
