SilverOne
Hi All, Like so many others, my game froze at about 5-10 minutes of playing. I seem to have solved it on my machine using tips I got from the thread... This is what I did: -Updated the Via 4-in-1 drivers to 4.37 -Disabled hardware sound acceleration in Dxdiag -Closed all systemtray programs and disabled my Norton Antivirus Auto-protect (i don't know which was casuing the problem, I just tried everything at once ) System spec for reference: Athlon 800 MHz, Geforce 2 GTS, SB Live 1024, 768 MB RAM Now it is running fine at 800x600x32... Cheers, and I hope y'all find a way to solve the other problems too! SilverOne EDIT: I seem to have spoken too soon, it crashed after 2 hours, and then another 3 times within 15 minutes of playtime... Oh and I updated the NVIDIA drivers aswell so that didn't solve it either. Perhaps my PC is running too hot...?
Ryan_
Well, I too have come across this freeze a few minutes into the game. It was strange because when I first got the game I had no problems at all! I knew other people were having the same problems so I started surfing the fourm and this is what I found. MOST of the people experiencing this problem have pretty good computers, unfortunatly they are using AMD processors and SB Live sound cards. Well, I fit into the catagory of most. I knew the game worked fine before so I formatted and reinstalled my whole computer and still the same problem. When my game froze the music kept on playing so I didn't think there would have been anything wrong with my sound card but the whole thing turned out to just be that. Not that the card was fried but the software that came with it was incompatible. I uninstalled the sound card and everything with it then reinstalled JUST the drivers and BINGO! The game now runs perfect again! Now dont go and uninstall your sound yet, just go to device manager and disable every aspect of your sound card and try to play GTA3. If it works now then you know what you have to do! Please reply with your results! Good Luck!
Wolf68k
Try updating the VIA 4-in-1 drivers to 4.46 I tried the 4.36 drivers once, only because I had forgotten what version I had before and it was suggested by VIA Arena's drivers page to use them in running Win98. The framerate dropped big time. However after getting the 4.46 drivers, performance came up, maybe even more than before trying the 4.36 Also of course there is the old, time to wipe it clean and install the OS fresh, thing. I know how much of a pain in the butt that can be, but Windows is bad for that sort of thing.

jasonng
When a start a game, the blue loading bar goes 80% of the way, but then it freezes where it's suppose to convert textures. Apparently, all i had to do was simply change the audio settings from the default Game compatible device to some wave... thing, but life's never this simple, because the Game compatible thing was there, which weren't the default, and the only other choices were my sound card and my modem. I tried them all but i still can't start the game. Please help!

Jognt
ok, ive looked everywhere....... srry if this is in the wrong place i got some problems: 1: i got a P III 725mHz, 256 mb ram, geforce 2 mx400, and GTA runs laggy in 640x480x16!!! i can run UT2K3 smooth 50 fps in that!! system is clean and all, perfectly maintained, enough free disk space ...... CPU temp only is 50C (i know, much for an intel) but it always works, but not in GTA3 :S 2: how can i see my fps ingame? all other games i play are mods for UT or 2K3 and then all i need s "timedemo 1" is there a similar command for GTA3? Demarest
Need more info. Like is your mx400 32MB or 64MB as it was available both ways. And what OS are you using? Also, you do not have a 725MHz as they don't exist. PIII's ran on a 100MHz and 133MHz FSB with multipliers stepping .5, so that is simply not possible (not important here though). The GTA3 engine was not very kind to lesser machines, but there are some things you can do to help yourself. First things first, delete My Documents/GTA3 User Files/gta3.set and GTA3/models/txd.img and txd.dir. Don't worry, the game will rebuild these for you. Make sure you have Trails and Frame Limiter turned off and Draw Distance set to default or lower. Turn off any other software including antivirus etc. Make sure your drivers for motherboard, video card, and directx are current. If none of that works, you may have to reinstall the game. Your savegames will remain intact, but you will have to reinstall any mods you have installed. This is a good thing since one or more of them could be responsible. Let us know how it goes. Demarest
Translation time. dude, lets get one thing straight...... if there is one thing here i dont like, its your attatude. OK? Which attitude? The attitude that now that I know you're doing it to yourself, there's nothing I CAN do to help you? I'm so sorry that I cannot go beyond the realm of my own capabilities. What a bad attitude to have! Shame on me. i simply asked since A LOT of ppl have problems w/ GTA3 if some ppl knew performance enhancers, and how i could see my FPS ingame.... Yep. But most people are legitimately trying to play the game. When you OC, you KNOW you run the risk. When it doesn't work, it could be because you are OCing. If not, it could be because you ONCE OCed. my PC is rock stable, my guess is, more stable than your mind will ever be.. So stable that you can't play the game, right? I'm so envious of you! You don't know me, but it is fascinating that you can tell everything about the inner-workings of my mind based on a few sentences on your monitor. Fascinating. Do teach me this some time. well, if nobody answers my question, of how i can see my FPS ingame, without any friggin add-on, then please also refrain from flaming someone..... It's unfortunate that you have such a closed mind. You were not flamed. You cannot cry "flame" every time you don't get your way. Such is life. GTA3 does not support FPS display. Can you deal with that? lemme guess, you hate OC ' ing? Another fascinating psuedo-magical, physic, assumption. How did you guess? I guess it doesn't matter since you are incorrect. I'm sorry you allow yourself to jump to conclusions. dude, get a life ffs You think I'm writing this from my coffin? And I'm the one with issues? EDIT: oh and btw: tried those things u said, worked a bit, now is less laggy..... btw: still wonderin how i can see my FPS though.... Suddenly I'm useful again because (see first quote response). And I've answered the FPS thing. Just so you know, when you write stuff like that, you tell on yourself. I could argue with you all day long, but the "audience" will be able to see for themselves what's really going on. The fact remains that you wasted our time. I'm sorry this upsets you, but you weren't the one taken advantage of here. I move on really well though. So keep the personal comments to yourself (since you don't appear to be very accurate with them and they have no place here), and let's keep the discussions GTA based since this IS the GTA3 forums. Demarest
with the attitude, i ment you with your "you DONT have 725 mHz" concludin im wrong. answer according to me would be summat like "how can u have 725 mhz?" That is not attitude. That is fact. I also went on to say it didn't matter. Not only should that have "made you feel better" but it should have screamed how wrong I was. As it turns out, the fact that intel never released a 725MHz CPU had EVERYTHING to do with your problem. and the "ah i oc'ed my PC, and it aint stable now" line pissed me of.. these things, the way in which u said it, this is called, flaming, where i come from atleast.. Flaming is posting towards a person and not towards what they wrote and with a negative intent. Try again. about the FPS thing, k, sure, i can live with that, though u couldve mentioned earlier. You could've told me about OCing earlier. We could go on all day about what COULD'VE happened. That wouldn't get us anywhere, now would it? hmm, so you dont hate OC'ing, then maybe you like it? then you should know, that when done well, there is no problem. Another assumption on your part. I haven't EVER said enough publically on the subject for ANYBODY to know how I feel about it. So put away the jump to conclusions mat. When you run a system outside of it's intended specs, you run the risk of instability. This is not an attack on you, this is a fact. I didn't say that OCed systems couldn't be stable, but then you didn't say that you lowered it back to spec to try it out. So we're spinning our wheels here. about the coffin part...... good one NP. Any time you need me to expose the holes in your logic and use of first grader insults, you know where to find me. btw: this part: Suddenly I'm useful again because (see first quote response). hmm, im sorry for saying thank you then... if you dislike it. I don't dislike appreciation. Especially from somebody who doesn't experience it. I said that because the sum of your post was negative, negative, negative, thank you. Very blaring contradiction and I was pointing it out. You over-react too much. Your logic is shaky when existent. I think it's best we leave the rest of the community with an otherwise useful pinned topic. So post another emotional rant if you'd like, I'm done with you. Mazza
This has been asked before, but I haven't seen any replies. My problem is that after I click on start a new game, it loads about 90% and then stops. It says that it cannot convert textures for my video card and I need to be logged in as an administrator (which I already am). I really want to solve this problem. I have an AMD 1.4ghz 512 RAM GeForce 2 Any help would be appreciated.
Demarest
I had that problem once. I'm not sure what file it's trying to update, but that file is read only. mjjoker
Can't load savegames. 1.Try this patchhere, note that the official v1.1 patch is required. Look for gta3 patches and make sure you'll choose the right version. The version of your gta3 can be viewed in the gta3 menu in one of the corners. 2.Try the official patch 1.1.(At your own risk..) 3.Install the 28.32 detonator drivers. It seems that gta3 will load only with these drivers sometimes. This is the Patch i am talking about. it don't work. I have almost clocked GTA Vice City and need something else to fill in time, and nothing is in this games league, so i need the patch. The link doesn't work for me. Idunno if it needs a quicker connection or something. Please Help mj P.S. Thanks for the tip Demarest
Demarest
No problem. It doesn't work for me either. However, the link points to an address containing gamecopyworld in it. Gamecopyworld runs off of multiple mirrors. Chances are, the one that was linked is now kaput or just not online at the moment. So I would go to gamecopyworld.com, choose an operational mirror, go to GTA3, and see if you can find a similar file. If you are successful, maybe post that link here for others to partake of. ...at least until that server goes dysfunctional
