Helpful Fixes for GTA III

I've been reading about this audio patch for a couple days now all over the site.  I was wondering why you can't use it above the stated 384mb ram.

I think because if you already have so much RAM, it wouldn't help (much) anymore. The patch was used to create some more free RAM for gta3. With 384 Mb Ram or more you should be able to play gta3 with no problems, so..

GTA3 doesn't recognize your full card memory and gives "12mb memory needed" error

1.The fault seems to be lying in Direct X 8.1..

Click on the Display tab.

Search for "Approx", "Total Memory" you should see "Unknown" or "N/A".

Running the Direct3D Acceleration test will give you an error something like

"step 8 error, no video memory"

The solution suggested by a person: (i don't think the netmeeting bit is even necessary,

maybe worth skipping)

Go into Netmeeting, go to.... Call>Host Meeting

then click the "OK" button, then go to Call>Exit.

The go to my computer; Go to sharing in these drives

(right click and it should be in the menu) and makes sure they all say

'DO NOT SHARE THIS DRIVE', then go back in to DXDIAG and go back to the display screen..

It should now have the memory available and your game should work.

the display tab under what?????

Ooops! Sorry! O directly copied that solution from someone else, as if i did with a lot of other solutions too. Anywayz, you must go to start, then run, then type: "dxdiag" Then you'll see that display tab popping up rightaway. ;)

You ticked the wrong boxes. Do as follows; (you could also have read the readme but what the heck)

1.Tick the box "Force sw Tnl" in the directx options

2.Select the "gta3.exe", by clicking "select" below the screen.

3.When you have done this, you can click "run" at the right bottom.

4. In addition, you can tick "frame + polygon counter" to see your fps.

GTA3 will load till R* Logo.. then nothing.

3.Renaming all files in the movie-directory in your gta3 folder except for the logo-one.

Love all the help.  Unfortunately it hasn't come to much yet.  I've scoured the site looking for more help but you seem to be the guy to talk to.  I still am getting about 11fps even with all the patches.  I'm gonna try to Rockstar's 1.1 patch and the audio patch over the weekend.

:sui:   Anyway, here's my specs.  Pretty close to your's:

AMD Athlon 900mhz

Geforce 2mx 32mg card (with latest detonator xp driver)

512 pc133 sd ram

60gig hd (over half free & defragged)

Win 98se

all non-essential apps closed

3danalyzer running

640x480x16 resolution

frame sync on (seems to run better than w/o)

limiter off

trails off

patch to remove paper, peds & rain

copied all audio files to hd (haven't run audio patch yet, so probably isn't doing a damn thing)

audio set to miles

3d audio off

3d analyzer didn't seem to make a difference.  Still averaging about 10-13 fps.  Maybe I'm not running it right.  Do I need to run gta3.exe with 3danalyzer every time I play?  Or just the first time.  I seem to remember hearing both ways.  Tried it both ways and no difference, which leads me to think I may not be running it right.  Although I did get the frame counter.  Okay, stupid question then.

About the nvidia driver...does it need to be the 28.32 specifically or will the latest one suffice (which is 32.something)?  I really rather not have to upgrade my graphics card b/c all my other games run just fine.  It seems that this one is the trouble maker.

Here's another thought.  Would higher ram speed help?  I've only been a convert to pc gaming over the last year and hadn't really had update my hardware.  If I do need to go to faster ram chips do I need to upgrade my mother board too?  Please...not too many laughs from the gallery.  :D

Any help would be wonderfull.  If your out of ideas then tell me to shove off.  Thanks.

I have already explained how to use the 3danalyzer in one of my previous posts. Do that everytime you run gta3, and don't forget to start gta3 up with the 3danalyzer itself. You don't have to start up gta3 with a trainer you might want to use to, the trainers will also work if you just start up the prog and leave it running.

Werre, i see that you already have 512 mb ram, but i believe that kind of ram is err.. kinda slow. If however you want faster ram, then you're gonn ahve to look for a new motherboard.

About the drivers, i suggest that you try some different ones, sometimes older ones will run better then newer ones. Just don't forget to uninstall the old drivers if you are installing another one. Problem why gta3 runs so slow is probably because of the processor, which is kinda slow. Oh, and the specs i posted, those are not mine, but the recommended,if you wan to play gta3 reasonable.

The Chosen, all i can offer is what i posted in the fixes list, but some links aren't working, that's my bad, forgot to recover them, since a few urls have changed. The forums were the links lead to, are down now, so i will recover them later on this day.

Mafia Sniper, i don't really know what to do about the mb errors. All i can say is doing what i posted in the fixes topic, and no, there is no patch to override it, and if there was one, it would be usless if you have less then 8mb, since gta3 is gonna run with 3 fps then. So pretty useless. Some people could only get through the test after trying  a few times. I believe there is also a topic here about it.

Hey guys. Nice post rudolf, really helpful.

It did not help me though, my problem is rather different. Everytime i start GTA3, either 1.0 or 1.1, it does nothing. Not even the R* logo. Just refreshes the screen, i get a little "Processing" cursor, then goes back to normal. I tried to download all the patches i could find, either cracks, XP fixes and nothing, nothing worked. I'm pretty desperate now, do you think there's some other options i haven't tried, or some files i didn't download?

Thanks in advance, to whoever is going to help me with this issue.

Ok Let me first say, Im new here blah blah.

Ok, I had a Cel [email protected], Hercules GFMX,288MB Ram. It may not sound like much, but its tuned up in every aspect. I used to have #1 score on 3D Mark 2000 with this rig right (in its class). Anyhow GTA3 ran like a champ under XP, I didn't even need no Direct3D patch or nothing. Now I got a new mobo and a Duron [email protected], 256mb, Hercules GFMX. Now I see what people were complaining about. The blurry text, I saw for the first time. Now ingame it runs slower then it did on my old Celly. In any case I think suggestions of tweaking your video card just to get 2 fps more of a frame rate that is f*cked up to start with is wrong. Why would you want preformance of a Celeron 500 on your 2ghz rig. I think Rockstar should look into the issue and release some patches or something.

Hi all,

I have a really annoying problem with GTA3. I had it installed on my second hard drive, and everything was fine - it ran perfectly, if a little slower than when I had it on my Voodoo5!

Recently, I did a fresh format of the first hard drive, and Windows98 SE. I launched GTA3 without installing it again, and I got as far as the first screen (the one with all the mafia guys), when it hung.

I deleted the folder and all others and files except the savegames, after uninstalling, then reinstalled, this time on my first hard drive.

I installed the V1.1 patch, then ran the game. It loaded, then after the first video, which I skipped, I got this -

"Unhandled Exception: c0000005

At address: 005ac67b"

Since then, I haven't been able to get the game running. I tried uninstalling, then installing back onto the second drive, without installing the patch, and I got the same message again. I installed the latest drivers, 29.42, but I get the same error.

Does anyone have any idea as how to to fix this? My machine is self-built, specs below...

Please help!

1GHz Athlon Thunderbird

MSI KT3 Ultra

256MB PC2100 DDR RAM

Asus V8420 Pure GeForce4 ti4200 128MB

SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 Player

20GB Seagate Series 6 HD (first drive)

40GB Seagate Series 6 HD (second drive)

16x slot-loading Pioneer-106s DVD drive

12x10x32 Memorex CD-RW

Windows98 SE

I've read lots of posts in these forums and some of the ideas here have helped fixing lag and so forth, but I haven't found anything exactly like the problem I'm having. I'm on the second island, Stanton and all of a sudden, my saves won't load. Seems like most people have problems with loading saves right from the beginning of the game. My problem started half way through the game. Occassionally, these saves will load after as much as six minutes, but often they won't have loaded, even after 10 minutes. I have to ctrl escp out and get out of the game by ctrl alt deleting it.

In the first post this thread Rudolf said...

Can't load savegames.

1.Get the myth "fixed" exe here. Look for gta3 patches and make sure you'll choose the right version. The version of your gta3 can be viewed in the gta3 menu in one of the corners.

2.Try the official patch 1.1.(At your own risk..)

3.Install the 28.32 drivers. It seems that gta3 will load only with these drivers sometimes.

I don't get number 3. What are the 28.32 drivers? Is that for the graphics card or windows or what? I just don't know what that means.

My system...

Athlon XP 1.8+

Siluron GF3 ti 200

Sound Blaster Live Platinum

Windows XP pro

about 500 RAM

KT7A motherboard with Via chipset

I've got the 1.1 patch for the game.

My loading problems began around the "gang car roundup" missions on Staunton. Before that my saves loaded in about five seconds. I use cheats much more than I used to. Does that affect this sort of thing?

Thanks in advance. Great forum. Best I've seen for researching problems.

Yo. Well, i finally wiped GTA3 from my hdd last night. I didn't want to, but the continual locking up and freezing up was just too much. And i was really enjoying the game too. It took me weeks to get it going, then when i did, it locked up from time to time. I upgraded to version 1.1 during this time. Next I installed George Breeze's PCI latency patch (it was mentioned on the forums somewhere). GTA3 worked great for weeks, but it screwed up my internet access and modem (i have a PCI modem) so I had to eventually reformat, and reinstall windows 98. I reinstalled GTA3, not the PCI patch and not the upgrade patch, and played well for a few days then locked up. Sometimes after a few minutes, some times after a few seconds, sometimes after 20 minutes. Some times I got a Ddhelp error, some times not. I'm not prepared to reinstall the PCI patch as I need my internet access to check email etc and get on the forums. I have all the updated drivers (using 29.42 on my Gainward GF2 MX 400, latest I think on my Vibra 128 sound card). I really wanted to play this game, and did for a few weeks, but the problems outweigh the enjoyment _ at the moment. Maybe when Rockstar patch the game properly, and when it can run for good without locking up then I may just reinstall it _ but not until then. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting down to play a game, then it locks up a couple of seconds after starting to play. I just can't be bothered with that. And before anyone moans about not doing this or doing that, I'm not a newbie to PCs or gaming. I defrag and scandisk regularly and can work my way around the bios no problem. I have also scanned the forum daily for help (especially Rudolf's great fixes). I think GTA3 is a great game, when it works _ but should it take so much hassle to get a game working? I don't think so. I have had no problems running all the other late release games: RTCW, Jedi Knight, MOA: AA etc. For what it's worth: Duron 800, 256mb ram, 20gb hdd, puretek 56K modem, cyberdrive 52x cd drive, Gainward GF2 MX400, Win 98.

Cheers.

Hi, I have a Toshiba Tecra 9000 laptop (512MB RAM) with a 16MB S3 SuperSavage/IXC 1179 card with the latest video drivers July 26, 2002 and DirectX 8.1.  I have yellow and white blocks around any text that is displayed.  This seems similar to the dreaded XP yellow text problem but I am running Windows 2000 SP2.  I have also downloaded and installed the gta3patch.exe.

Any one got GTA3 working properly on a W2K Tecra 9000?

By the way, this doesn't address the problem I'm getting when the game freezes and goes to the Blue Screen of Death. Rockstar has no solution to this problem and sucks a$$ all the way. I've had it with the problems with this game ... I'm thinking lawsuit at this point. Someone has to hold Rockstar responsible for selling pure CRAP!

Back again. Well, GTA3 is back on my PC and there have been interesting developments. Has anyone else experienced this: I had a niggling in the back of my head to update the Via 4n1 drivers (was still using the originals from the motherboard install cd when built the system a year ago). I downloaded the 4.38 drivers from Via, installed them, went through the new hardware etc detected carry on, then, just for a laugh, did a dxdiag test. Now previously my gainward Geforce 2 MX 400 had passed the Direct X 7 texture tests but stalled at the Direct X8 tests. Well, lo and behold, the card now passed both tests. WTF? How can that happen? Is that a direct result of the new 4n1 drivers. So, trying to push my luck, reinstalled GTA3 and played for about 30min last night. No lock ups or freezine, still a delay when quitting and returning to the desktop, but at least able to play it. Does anyone know whether updating the 4n1's could have solved some lockup problems? Just a thought.

I was having trouble with choppy gameplay and frequent COMPLETE pauses. I tried every patch and setting I read

about in hopes to get the game working.

Epox 8K7A

AMD duron 1000mhz

128 MBDDR

ATI radeon AGP32MBDDR

SB Live platinum

The thing that did it for me:

In my bios, there's an option called "AGP ISA alaising".

(weird because there's no ISA slots on my MB)

I disabled that and stopped using the 3d analyze.

now in 640X480 at 32 or 16 it runs smooth. If I go up

to 800X600, there's some slowdown. but I keep the res.

low and have no problems, even the menus are faster.

I did remove the papers with the high frame rate program

but left everything else. I also downloaded and installed the new VIA drivers, as someone previously said in this topic.

hope this helps someone maybe...
