[REL] Boxmonster's Timecyc Edit

Recommended Posts

Here is an edit of GTA IV's default timecyc.dat, I simply edited it because there are so many values in the file that I simply have no clue what they are for. I think I should mention I edited it with Myster92's EditIV.

I basically tried going for a more realistic look, but also more eye-pleasing than the original. Some things I changed were:

Lighting - more realistic lighting, shadows that match the color of the sky to emulate a global illumination effect; nights are a bit more orange.

The sky - The sky is bluer, more like a cold day; sky is darker during sunrise and sunset.

Color filters - I got rid of all the color corrections because there is no real point in them if the lighting can be changed.

Saturation - everything is more colorful, cloudy/rainy days aren't extremely washed out.

Clouds - not as red and yellow during midday.

Farclip - bigger, but nothing too insane.

Reflections - more reflections for rainy weather.

Ok, an update is out. Midday for Sunny and Extra Sunny was too dark so I've brightened it, I've also improved some inconsistent lighting, and increased the farclip for some conditions (I should've done that a long time ago).

As for performance, it's about the same, according to Fraps I've gained one or two fps.

hmmm. im gonna take this one for a spin.

say, how did u capture the screenshots in the exact same time if the game needs to be restarted in order to re-apply a new timecyc file??

p.s. - the sky are not as blue as we think. in real life they DO tend to have different colors to them so just making a day time have blue skies is a misconception. also different filters give a more diverse mood to the different times in GTA and although sometimes the filters in the game a pretty pronounced i think they adds a stylish look to it. im not sure if your mod is for the better in my opinion but im sure others will think it's great so thanks for making it and posting it anyways.

i should try it out and only then give my opinion so as of now - i have none smile.gif

lets not call him a liar because of the screenshots just yet.

i tried that mod and the result DOES look like the screenshots. whether u like it or not is up to your own taste but i definately agree that it doesnt seem possible to produce identical screenshots like that. dont know what the deal is.

itt: stupid assholes.

Look at the clouds. They are different. Look at the peds/everything else. It's the same.

Conclusion: He must have used the video editor. The video editor saves things in the exact same spot, but it lacks the option to record the weather, thus rendering it in real time.

@ OP: Good job, gonna try this in combination with ENB Series biggrin.gif

Wow... lotsa bad feedback. Yeah... I used the video editor and paused it, not rocket science. I'm just alternating the timecyc.dats, saving one at a time, and with Myster92's EditIV, instantly reloading them without restarting the game. The screenshots are not altered in any way, they really do look like that ingame. Need I post more screenshots or something? You guys can try it out if you don't believe (but I know you won't).

@ topeira: Based on the sky I see everyday, the sky is a bright blue, clouds just screw it up and make it paler sometimes. I've tried to emulate that in this.

I really liked the rain with this mod, and the sunsets are really nice as well. Main thing I didn't like is that nights look like they are in black and white ... you can see colors at night in real life. I'd like to see this with less black and white nights, and maybe with the filters back on as well. Either way I'll keep an eye out on this mod for future developments ...

Looks realistic. I don't know how the weather is where you are, but here it's colorful when it's sunny.

The picture has been took early in the morning, with very sunny weather. I think it looks more realistic than R* default settings. I always felt like everything looked too dark, and the colors too faded.

Too much contrast between sky and buildings. [Especially Look on GetALife building]

Well, in my defense, sunlight only directly hits the Getalife Building from the sides. And [LLC]NelsoN seems to be using the ENB Series for an occlusion effect or something, I've never really liked that effect.

Anyways, for the next update bloom is gonna be reduced a lot so there won't be ugly hyper-saturated glows (saturation will be increased since bloom always added some more color).

And the insanely low visibility on Lightning will be reduced, It looked nice but it was also annoying.

Well, I've tried to replicate your picture, V1.1, Extra Sunny, 8:00 (yours looks a bit earlier, not a big difference). The shadows shouldn't be like that if you are not using any graphics enhancement mods... I mean look, in yours sunlight is only really hitting the buildings in the background. There could be some other reason for that but I don't know (sunlight is disabled?). The problem is also seen in your other picture.

@ Masny: no, there's not much of a difference just decreased bloom and increased saturation, even the Lightning picture has more saturation although not really noticeable. In the first two pictures look at the taxis, since they seem to be some of the more richer colored vehicles; the lines on the road appear to be glowing in the old one; and the sky is a bit milder just because of those changes.

@ everyone: There will also be a few little changes (tryin to make the sunsets and sunrises better).

  • 2 weeks later...

Okay, V1.2 is here. Besides getting rid of bloom, I've pushed the yellow afternoon lighting for the more sunnier weather cycles back an hour since half the day was turning out to be yellowish; Rockstar made it so the sun appears for 14 hours a day, so it works. Sunsets are brighter and I've done other little tweaks.

I just tested this mod, and i gotta tell, this is the best timecyc.dat mod ever made. I just edited reflection power a bit, and it looks GREAT, almost like enb series, sometimes even better. So, boxmonster thank you for your great work. icon14.gif
