Moonshield
Make it a larger format and it'll be huge in the architecture/building industry. Being able to carry every single page from a set of drawings for a building in that would be so much less of a hassle. Being able to make corrections directly onto the drawing and then sending the updated drawings to the contractors, engineers, electricians, and clients would be a f*cking breeze. oc student
looks like an oversized iPod touch/iPhone to me. ass reamer
So what exactly is the point of this, or any tablet PC for that matter? I just don't get it. It would seem to me that if you can carry this thing around, you could easily carry a normal laptop, which has far greater storage, speed, and functionality. GTA3Freak-2001
Yeah the name does sound a bit like that but what were the alternatives? iTablet? iPlate? iGiant Touch? Of course I scoffed at this but I can see its got some great features that seems to make things simpler then a traditional laptop or tablet screen. Apple's stuff has always been geared that way, no nonsense for those who want it simpler. That's why it will be sucessful, I am not a fan of simple but plenty of people are. So what exactly is the point of this, or any tablet PC for that matter? I just don't get it. It would seem to me that if you can carry this thing around, you could easily carry a normal laptop, which has far greater storage, speed, and functionality. As I said its simplicity that makes the difference, everything on the iPad is right there in front of you and for some people that's great. There's no real point unless you're in a design field, really. Tablets and tablet pcs are pretty outstanding when you need them.

That flimsy stylishly stupid Apple construction won't last a day on a building site. And besides, it's too huge to fit anywhere besides a backpack so I say, fast cheaper laptop FTW. Otter
The iPhone NEEDS a forward facing camera. Video calls back and forth would be so awesome. I was going to say that about the iPad, but the idea of making a call on a phone the size of a trade paperback is a little ridiculous to me. Seriously, I just can't wrap my head around how this would be a functional element in anyone's life. The Microsoft courier, on the other hand.... LCstuntman
The Microsoft courier, on the other hand.... ...owns the sh*t out the iPad. The only way the iPad would actually serve a purpose is if it had a Mac OS, and even then, you might as well get an MacBook.

Shaunr
it may seem like just a big iphone, but it's also a lot more powerful, so you can put more graphic intensive games on there, and perhaps multitask. also seems pretty sweet for watching a movie by yourself. you don't have to hold the screen so close to your face and the image would be more crisp. now can you jailbreak it?I'm sure Geohot will be on it as soon as it comes out. Democrab
This thing is a gigantic piece of sh*t, there are far better tablet PCs and Steve said its to "replace the netbook", my netbook 1) is faster, 2) Can do more (For example, this won't have Flash support, so bye bye 50% of the internet), 3) has a good keyboard (Onscreen keyboards just plain suck, I tried using the onscreen one on my G1 and its near impossible to use.) I had an entire list of other reasons, but I cbf digging it off the other forum I posted it on. Now, I'm not against apple products (Saving up for an iPod touch, actually), but this is just stupid and an obvious cash in.

GTA3Freak-2001
The flash thing is a real issue, I can tolerate no flash on my iTouch due to the way I only use it to check emails and a few other things when I am out but now that the screen on the iPad is big enough for the full web experience you actually aren't getting it! It might have a higher clock rate (probably 1.6ghz atom) but i'm willing to bet this new A4 ARM chip can outpace it, or atleast match it. clock for clock my old acorn achemedes beat a pc of the same year in raw processing power. When ARM was in the same market as x86, they dominated. Also, the iPhone OS, and it's software is stripped the hell down underneath. Right here, on my desk is a 1993 commodore amiga 1200. it boots, loads a web browser, opens msn, and starts playing an mp3 before my monitor turns on. In actual, real world usage, your netbook gets spanked by something seen as outdated when mortal kombat II came out. It's all about the software. (to be fair, watching a youtube video is a terrible experiance that involves downloading it and running it in low res, low colour mode, but that's where the CPU comes in.) 2) Alright, flash support. Not apple's fault. the iPhone flash player adobe made sucked ass, and required the phone's cpu run full tilt constantly, destroying battery life. Apple told them to actually make a good peice of software, adobe spat ther dummy out. And flash is only the sh*tty parts of the internet. No flash? No adverts. Youtube, the only flash video website anyone ever uses, works on iPhone OS. No loss. Flash versions of sites made me want to kill myself. 3) The G1 keyboard doesn't compare to a tablet keyboard. On this one, the keys are actually the size of normal keys. Not to mention you'd type with your fingers, like on a computer, rather than with your thumb, like on a phone. Much quicker to get used to. Will I buy one? Give it a couple of years. By then cheaper models will be out, iPhone os 4 will be out, with multittasking, apparently, and I can get one second hand. I can see this machine exploding with drawing, painting, CAD, etc apps, as well as being the best eBook reader in the world. I mean, really, kindles? a big ass tablet just to read a book and nothing else? I can save the $$$ and buy real books instead. In 2 years things like the Dell "Mini 5", Microsoft Courier, and the HP Slate will have blown this thing so far out of the water I doubt Apple will be even trying anymore. Enjoy your $500 glorified coaster though. Just a side note, it totally baffles me how something that is the most common media feature on the Internet, Flash, people are going and excusing Apple for not including. I don't care what you say, it's Apple's responsibility to be helping Adobe get Flash working on their device, not the other way around. I hope Adobe just says "f*ck it" and watches Apple flounder. ~ Proud Supporter of the Child's Play Charity! | GTANET + Child's Play ~
Shaunr
what the hell apple? are you stupid or something? http://www.csmonitor.com/Innovation/Horizo...nd-Adobe-is-mad and interesting in how they want to replace the netbook which atom processors with up to a 2 ghz clock speed. The ipads are going to have 1 ghz processors. But i guess you can't expect a whole lot from such a small device. but not a whole lot of things different from the ipod touch besides the screen. it still would be really cool, but still, without flash, their "best internet experience" statement is arguably false. Pico
windsor, your post is full of heresayy, guesses, and poor predictions and all around infactualy. The iPad is a poorly made tablet. It physically isn't very appealing with it's large frame. The screen should have been made to just touch the edges, who cares if it's a little thickert that way? It's not like it's going in your pocket. Which leads me to what it actually is. A gigantic iPod Touch. It's just the same OS with no extra functions. It needs multitasking to make it useful for any serious usage, it needs tabs in the browser, especially since you can't multi task. It's lackin a camera, no storage expansion, no USB port... it's just a poorly executed device that will be sold to idiots. Other companies like HP will be coming out with tablets with touch screens only and they will be running full OS's, like HP's will have Windows &, which is great for touch screen devices. Now, the processor, as Windors brought up. It's not some fancy special built Apple unit. It's an ARM processor running at 1.0Ghz, comparable to the Snap dragon with a separate, built in graphics core. Nothin that good about it. Newer cell phones have the same computing and graphivs power, AND more features than the iPad. An Atom would do noticeablly better, and I can say that with out pre-stating I'm assuming it. Give this thing: A true dual core 2Gb RAM A real size hard drive Full OS X USB port(s) Keep the price around $600 and it'll be a decent, if not good device. As of now, it's virtually useless in terms of other available devices on the market.
