Moonshield
I could really use some feedback on this guy, I'm kind of stuck. I feel like it got too cluttered as I added more, especially the tree on the right.
Mark
IMO, it needs more contrast. Dark areas, highlights etc. Depends how you want the weather I guess, but it seems a little...flat, contrast wise. That's of course personal opinion. Looking great so far though
Moonshield
That actually has a lot to do with the sh*tty phone picture. The foreground does pop a lot more than it shows in the photo. For the background, I found a reference to what I'm going for:
Pico
I was going to say the same as Mark, it seems like the trees in the mid ground at least wouldn't hurt to be a little darker. I like the foggy back drop, although maybe some more blurry tree trunks like in your reference photo may help add some more depth. Darkening the ground the further back it goes may help as well. Also, what's the spot of red on the ground near the left end of the picture?
Moonshield
Yeah, the mid and foreground trees are darker, they just don't show up like that thanks to the picture. And yeah, the plan was to add some silhouettes of trees in the background.
The Guru
Looks a lot better now. There's now the contrast that was needed.
geomy
Wow, did it really take me a year to find this topic? I knew you were a great artist, Moon, but damn. I'm especially fond of the house perspectives, and Kahn's not bad either. I wish I could offer some decent criticism, but you seem to have your sh*t in order. If I had to say anything, sign them or add a watermark before uploading them, your work is good.
txdeditor
Man, I can't even tell how awesome your works are. Everytime i look at them it I feel like I could do something like that, but man, you're always full of ideas, it's always a new piece with a completely new idea. Really, people tell me that I have a talent to make depth of field and materialism, but I have a lack of ideas usually. You're really talented, congrats. Moonshield
Thanks man, I really appreciate that. I forgot to put up the finished 793 when I finally put the last touches on it.
Moonshield
Uhh, double post. Sorry. Finished a logo for my band today, ready to be screenprinted.
Tyler
Is it the same band you're planning on Pan-Handling with? Nah, but really man, I feel a bit of Odin in this work, any sort of influence by Norse Mythology here?
Moonshield
Kind of I guess, indirectly at least. It's more of a Tolkien influence. The band's name is Grey Host, which is a name given to the dead men of Dunharrow by Tolkien. The imagery of those characters were directly influenced by the Norse belief of the Furious Host or the Wild Hunt, however.
Pico
It's all looking great, man I like the improvements to the swamp/forest picture. I just noticed the moss-covered skull, very subtle. Also, you never said, what's the red thing to the bottom left?
Moonshield
Pico, it's supposed to be a bit of clothing from the skull, just used as a flash of color. Here's a flyer I did for my friend's huge NYE party he's throwing. My band's playing. It should be gnarly as all hell.
Moonshield
Again with the double posting. I'm making this for my uncle for xmas. He's more of a Phish fan, but I think he'll dig it. Might not be able to tell what it is yet, but it's going to be the Grateful Dead's Deadhead skull logo, made out of mushrooms, flowers, other plants, and rocks. Any ideas for the blue area? EDIT: Finished! Edited December 24, 2010 by Moonshield
Moonshield
Could I get some opinions? I'm doing some promo pictures for my band, and instead of photos, I'm drawing them. Took these with my phone, so the colors are a bit off. So I had the idea of each of the members (3 total right now) standing in 1/3 of a plain dark grey field, barely distinguishable from the black "cloaks". I was going to just do the figures, then play with the colors, and the background in photoshop, so I can change it to whatever. On the opposite third, a bit further back, would be silhouettes of our spirit animals standing on some rocks or something (it's awesome and gay at the same time!). Thoughts? Jonny_Tightlips
I get PM notifications whenever the phrase "awesome and gay" is posted. What i'm visualizing in my head looks good. Concerning the field, do you have an idea of how much sky will be above the spirit animals in the background? Or is the field taking up the entire view? Just to think about negative space or if you're going to use constellations to write out the band name or some quirky sh*t. edit: Nevermind. The notification is just set to "and gay". Moonshield
True. When I say "field" I didn't mean a literal field, but rather a solid color, though that might work? Maybe a gradient instead? Once I get everything drawn up and scanned in, I'll have more of an idea as I mess with it. Maybe it'll be a silhouette of a field along the bottom, and more of a sky or some treatment in the negative space, like Electric Wizard's album Come my Fanatics:
geomy
The hair ('specially in the beard) looks great, but the cross hatching gets a little muddled ('specially on your forehead). Maybe it's the fill behind your head vs. the white space behind your bearded bandmate that's throwing me off... I can't really offer advice since I'm not much with paper and pen these days, but I like your inspiration, and can see this heading in the right direction. So long as that direction is both awesome and gay...
Moonshield
Some updates from the caricature convention that I attended two weeks ago. and an unfinished one that I ran out of time working on: And here's an update on that band sketch I'm working on. Not too sure about the 'celestial tree', but it works for now. Edited January 31, 2011 by Moonshield
Moonshield
Some new quick things: Idea for a logo or design for my new etsy.com store, making guitars and selling other random art craps. Tommy-Vercetti19
That shading is really nice. I like how you inverted the shadow with light on the bottom of the picture. The detail is stunning in my opinion. Very nice work.
Moonshield
Hey, thanks man. Appreciate it. Currently werkin on a thang for a show. Kind of Frazetta meets Fillmore: The smoke/border is still kind of rough - going to run it through illustrator. Going to keep the colors simple so it'll be easy to screen print. Maybe 3 or 4 colors including the outline.
Tyler
Sorry I been ignoring this section for too long, Seb. I love the latest one here, but is I'm trying to figure out if it reminds me of Venture Bros. because of it's style, or because of you. Also, the knotted root banner design is fantastic, I'd be tempted to ask for a banner like that if I had a website.
Moonshield
Thanks man. I've been ignoring it too - along with my blog. Work sucks. Did this real quick like for Conan's website fan art thing. And here's an update on that Bonemother poster. We have a set date for the show now, so I've got to get cracking on finishing this and getting it printed. Also, we need other bands to put on the bill.
