Shocky01
So just downloaded a copy off steam and started it up, used recommended settings and started playing and straight away noticed the game was stuttering or skipping frames, whats going on? I'm using under the recommended memory usage, latest version of the game with latest drivers. I've played round with the settings and the only thing which seems to fix the stuttering is turning off the shadows, but then the game looks more butt ugle then it already does. Is there a fix for this? Why is this happening? SpecsWindows 7i7 920HD5870 (1GB)6GB MemorySamsung SSD 128GBCorsair 700W
mkey82
There is a pinned topic, try using memrestrict. Oh. Make sure you're using latest GPU drivers, GTAIV doesn't run well on 5000 series cards, as it seems.
Shocky01
Better note I've tried the memrestrict stuff in the sticky, tried everything down to lowest medium setting, it does nothing.

Shocky01
After readin some other threads thought I'd try using an older patch so installed version 1.0.0.2 and guess what the stuttering was gone, great but it's imposible to play with this patch because live won't connect online and the graphics go all weird when entering buildings.... great. So basically the stuttering is a problem introduced with the latest patch, nice one devs. really great job. Firstly they create probably the worse coded game ever which doesnt scale which any hardware upgrades, runs like crap and has no working FSAA but then they manage to make it worse with updates.. wow. mkey82
If some other version works fine for you, use that. Not a great solution, but what can you do.
T-ru
Look at your catalyst control center (about ati) and may be there is everything on max - lower some settings, also chek out temperature of your specs Edited December 28, 2009 by T-ru

I would if I could as i've already said live won't connect and the graphics go all funky when I go inside buildings, wouldnt supprise me if that was on purpose because i'm using offline mode using the older version. Look at your catalyst control center (about ati) and may be there is everything on max - lower some settings, also chek out temperature of your specs It's all set to default, the game barely uses the hardware available, nothing is even near load so temps are pretty low playing GTA4. . T-ru
If you use ati catalyst ...9.12 (these drivers are sh*t) they are latest, change them to 9.10(they are the best for now,for all games) and before change v.drivers use some of these programs to cleaning the v.drivers -'your uninstaler' or 'driver sweaper' (google it)
mkey82
Funky errors you'll be getting if you "downgrade" the patch version as this is not possible for the 5th patch. And it's quite normal that the non-updated game will not allow you to go online.
truehighroller
He is having the same problem I am except there is for a fact no solution to mine that officially 100% fixes the issue any way. I have seen other people solve their issues by stopping the event log service which didn't work for me and for other people remapping their keys resolves the issue, didn't work for me, other people turning off superfetch resolves the issue, didn't work for me....... I can't think of any other possible sollutions off the top of my head because I'm so tired from no sleep with the Hollidays and all. Jump in here any body who can think of more possible sollutions.. Rapter
I have the same problem with my i7 (specs in sig) stuttering is a pain in the ass, and it's unbarable, tried lowest settings, still nothing. Even with monster rigs it fails.

xxCrowTechxx
I was also never able to resolve the issue and, in my case - it's related to the game getting near that 60fps area which causes some kind of sync problem all of a sudden (so it seems to me). It's present in all versions (> 1.0.3.0) for me though with 1.0.0.4 it's f*cking hideous, unbearable - game breaking. There is no setting that can stop it, it's stutterific. I settled for this: - Get XLiveless (thank you mod community for that gem) - Re-install the game - Patch to version 1.0.3.0 - use command line (-refreshrate 28 -frameLimit 1) to impose frame limit of 30fps (I use 28 as it actually does show 30-31 in game) Steady and beautiful, once again. What's hilarious and ironic, my hardware is no longer bent right over trying to run the game. For the record, I miss the smoothness the game had back in March09 when I first installed it. It's never been that good and it all started with the f*cking June patch (for me anyway). The fugly command line hack works for me even if it pains me to use it. Until I hear serious confirmation of improvements, that's how my GTA is going to stay. New content be damned. Oh wait...

T-ru
I get very irritant stutterings when i change xp3 with win7 i mean when is dark night , no sunrise or sunset and when i go somwhere with less textures ,airport, deep in sea, interiors, tunnels , the moving of the mouse was like a robot moving and all movoments was something like fast-slowly fast-slowly but i fixed it, i hope those tweaks to fix your stuttering: 1.Uninstall your v.drivers then cleaning it with driver sweaper and install ati hotfix 9.12(until now this is great for win7) 2.Disable Windows Event Log 3.Open up task manager, go to performance then view, cpu history and make it one graphics per all cpu's 4.Find your -memrestrict code from R* topic
trustreef
I think stuttering problem is coused by over limit FPS. I noticed that gamer who have that problem has 50 to 60 FPS, and the computer can't catch up with that speed, how about to try to make frame limit. I played with 30 FPS and it work really smooth with high setting, altough my computer does't powerfull. Athlon X2 4800 GForce 9600 GT 3 Gig Ram before that I played with ATI 1650pro. and it does't have stuttering problem, and run on 23-25 FPS with medium setting
