ShadowMesh Tutorial

~Let's Start~

-first you will need Col editor II

-now you must chosse an object you want to apply the shadow mesh...(pic)

-to make it work you should make the object target version to COL3, right click on the col you chossen (pic)

-the model must contain only faces to work, change to edit mode, and disable 'ignore backfacing' (pic)

-now select your whole model (it must turn red) (pic)

-right click 'ShadowMesh' ---> 'Get Selected faces only'

-now you should 'test' it see if the shadow mesh appears in col editor normal col, shadow mesh

-and now just export it in game and see how it looks smile.gif

-in case your model dosent have faces, then you have to do it your self in 3ds max then import it in col editor

this is one different model wink.gif and the shadow is darker cause i used an graphic modification

and dont forget to put graphics on high or very high to apply the dynamic shadow wink.gif

And they pretty much rely on precalculated lighting to give the impression of lighting in an area.

Hm, so the shadow mesh can just be a copy of the normal collision mesh's faces? I'll surely make a go at implementing this for all models with faces in OpenVice. smile.gif

@bammargera: indeed, this tutorial misses the step where you right click on the model in the list, and do Shadow Mesh -> Get from Collision Mesh.

So these shadows move as the sun moves through the sky, am I right? And do car headlights create shadows on objects like an effect that Enb series gives?

First one is correct, second one is not likely, headlights and other lights are not really implemented to that extent in SA.

shadow mesh>From collision mesh...

you should get shadow from selected faces not from collision mesh

-right click 'ShadowMesh' ---> 'Get Selected faces only'

shadowmesh need to be closed, if not, artifacts appears... and as the collision this is in object's local space.

It is REALLY recommended that you do the shadow mesh yourself! shadow mesh only needs the form of the model, collision mesh have other details needed for player collision that aren't needed at all here. Shadow mesh should be very optimized. In SA only a few props and all vehicles use it, stencil shadows are very expensive and you should use them carefully

well, if you could say us...

for example we do a really Low Poly model of our mesh so we use it as shadow mesh, but then..?

how we export it?(of course as shadow mesh from Max) and how we can add it to the collision model?

using COL io script from kam just select your shadow mesh with the 'shadowmesh button' as you would do for your collision mesh with the collision mesh button...
