Top albums of 2009 AND the decade.....

Recommended Posts

Figured I'd refrain from posting two topics and just combine the two. First, list your top 10 albums of this year, then give your honorable mentions as well as your biggest disappointment of the year. Then share what you think were the best albums of the decade.

1. HORSE the Band - Desperate Living

2. Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect

3. Kylesa - Static Tensions

4. Mastodon - Crack the Skye

5. Clutch - Strange Cousins From The West

6. Converge - Axe to Fall

7. Big Business - Mind the Drift

8. The Mars Volta - Octahedron

9. Baroness - Blue Album

10. GWAR - Lust in Space

Honorable mentions: A lot to come. I just need to remember what came out in 09 and not 08, haha.

Biggest disappoint: Porcupine Tree - The Incident. It just bummed the hell out of me. There were a lot of great parts but overall it drags a lot and gets kinda boring, but that's just me.

Now for albums of the dacade (this ones gonna have a lot of edits):

(in no real order)

Iron Maiden - Brave New World

Converge - Jane Doe

Mastodon - Leviathan

Coheed and Cambria - In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3

Coheed and Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV Volume I: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness

Topping 40 views and no replies. About a third of that is me, I've come into this topic and left again so many times today it's making my head spin. It's hard enough choosing my favourites, and harder still to remember what year they were even released; I too am having a bit of trouble distinguishing between 2008 and 2009 for some reason.

Static Tensions (Kylesa) is definitely up there, as is Nude With Boots (The Melvins), but I have a special fondness for Them Crooked Vultures' self-titled album. I may just be biased because I think all three men are fantastic, but there's not a single bad track on there. Also, while it's nowhere near as good as the albums I've previously mentioned, I must say I enjoyed Muse's latest effort, The Resistance, a lot. I'm not a big fan of Muse at all, I don't even like the songs they release, but it was just so easy to get into. Oh, and while I'm name-dropping, Buckethead's first 2009 effort, Slaughterhouse On The Prairie, was one of his best albums yet. I'm a sucker for instrumental work. I've probably missed a damn lot off too.

I can't even begin to think of the best albums of the decade... I'll edit this post when I decide.

LIST SO FAR:

Steve Roach - Afterlight

Buckethead - Albino Slug

Machine Head - The Blackening

Jack Johnson - In Between Dreams

Sunn O))) - Monoliths And Dimensions

Coheed And Cambria - In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth 3

Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow

Edited by Masterkraft

Jesus, I hate threads like these because it really makes me think what I picked up this year and what actually came out this year. The new Wolves in the Throne Room and Sunn O))) definitely delivered. Shrinebuilder was f*cking monumental, but I wish it was a track or two longer. Big Business's album was a big letdown.

And like masterkraft, I'm gonna have to edit this after putting a list together.

I can't really remember what good albums came out this year so I'll just do it for the decade, and btw I'm a huge Hip Hop head so all of these are Hip Hop albums.

More to come?

Big L - The Big Picture

Nas - Stillmatic

Nothing I can't think of that isn't in your list, but these two have to be my favourites. It never really occurred to me that Big L released it this decade...changes my whole perception of the Hip-Hop timeline.

Nas's Got yourself a gun was a true classic.

2009 had good albums but none was actually perfect. I liked Raekwon's OB4CL2, Clipse's Til The Casket Drops, Jada's The Last Kiss and Hov's BP3 but none (maybe Raekwon) had a perfect one.

Decade's best were no doubt Jay-Z's The Blueprint, Nas's God's Son and Stillmatic, Gang Starr's The Ownerz, Kanye's first three - College Dropout, Late Registration and Graduation and a f*ckload of others.

Yeah, Big L was a legend, too bad he was taken from us so early on in his career.

R.I.P

You were doing so good until you mentioned Kanye.

Haha.

I've gotta agree with Reggie's list but what about:

Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury

Common - Like Water for Chocolate

El-P - Fantastic Damage

Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP

Jay-Z - The Black Album

Madlib - Beat Konducta, Vol. 1-2

Madlib - Beat Konducta Vol. 5: Dil Cosby Suite

Nas - The Lost Tapes

Outkast - Speakerboxxx/ The Love Below

Reflection Eternal - Train of Thought

My mind is a tad too muddled at the present to think of the 2009 list, but I shall make a start on my decade list at least.

1. Elliott Smith - From a Basement on the Hill

2. Eels - Blinking Lights & Other Revelations

3. Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump

4. Quasi - Field Studies

5. Badly Drawn Boy - Have You Fed the Fish?

6. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

7. Bright Eyes - Lifted or the Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground

8. The Bravery - The Sun

I'll edit this later when I can think more clearly.

No particular order.

Arctic Monkeys - Humbug

The Prodigy - Invaders Must Die

Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum

The Blueprint 3 - Jay Z

Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown

Tongue N' Cheek - Dizzee Rascal

Oh, and I'll see if I can think up my decade list later. There's too many great albums popping into my head at the minute.

Have you listened to the Remastered version? More specifically the Deceifer Remix?

It's got the non brickwalled Guitar Hero III tracks with no audible compression/distortion, they've been adjusted so the bass is much higher and clearer in the mix, and it's got a snare drum sample from The Black Album, so the drums also sound better.

I've downloaded it. (it's okay folks, I bought the original) and it sounds f*cking amazing in comparison to the original.
