Why is it called GTA IV?

Why is it called GTA IV? It's really the 6th one. First there's the original GTA made in 1997 then GTA 2. Next they made GTA SA then GTA Vice City. Then they screwed up and called their newest one GTA III. confused.gif Have they forgot all about the first two GTAs? Then they still made a new one and called it GTA IV! It should really be called GTA VI.

They call it GTA IV because they only change the number when a new generation arrives.

@That_Guy28: What you must understand is that GTAs games are seen like part of an era. And what defines this era? Usually it's the graphics engine and relation with past GTAs.

The first era comprehends the following games: Grand Theft Auto (1), Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 (expansion) and Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 (expansion).

The second era comprehends only one game, Grand Theft Auto 2.

The third era is the biggest one so far, and comprehends the following games: Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto Advance, Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

The fourth era (current one) comprehends the following games: Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned (DLC), Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony (DLC) and Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars.

Between the first and second GTA, there was an update to the graphics and gameplay, so that's enough to create two separate eras. The same happened from GTA 2 to GTA III, which saw the incredible change from 2D to 3D. All games that followed GTA III (Vice City, San Andreas, etc.) were connected somehow, either trough the game engine (graphics) or story. If you remember correctly, all games in the third era use characters from previous games.

This doesn't happen with GTA IV. You don't see any past characters returning, all are new, all connections with the past are cut, you have a new game engine and some big changes in gameplay. So that's a new era, the IV era. The games that were released a few time ago, after GTA IV, belong to this era. The next GTA will probably be part of this era too, so it won't be called GTA V, but something else. biggrin.gif

thank you! finally someone who thinks the next gta WON'T be gta v!

I always thought that the next GTA wouldn't be called GTA V because it doesn't make sense. Unless Rockstar is building a whole new story and game engine, there's no reason to create a new era. They can still use lots of things from the IV era, which I'm certain they will use. smile.gif

I still have this crazy idea that we will get some kind of Vice City and San Andreas with a "GTA IV" game style...

I don't understand why people think the next game is GTA V when R* isn't going next gen yet. They just got started with IV.

Everybody knows that. We say GTA V because it's a whole lot easier than saying "next full game in the IV era." I'm not sure about you but I as hell do realise that most people here are n00bs. Do you want to explain this stuff every time? Most people can't read, you know. We use "V" as a designator and only have a moronic thread like this one once in a blue moon. Is this so hard to underestand for God's sake?

Thank you! Finally someone who thinks the next gta WON'T be GTA V!

Being an expert is based on the assumption that you already know that. In addition, it is also based on the fact that you checked all the previous game's out because it is one of the things that give you the right to call yourself a pro. Unfortunately, if you can't properly categorise London '61 and '69 as GTA 1 expansions, you only prove yourself to be one of the n00bs you keep bashing.

GTA and GTA2 were both for PC and Playstaytion. The same generation.

There's no reason, then, that V can't begin on the current generation consoles.

This is wrong on so many levels that I don't even know how to explain it to you. I wish I could say that you just have to learn English. Unfortunately, you also have to learn mathematics and based on your location - physics. It might be a good choice to take extra classes together with some other people posting here. Good luck in life.

DUDE CHILL !!!! Calm down suicidal.gif

The next GTA wont be named V as like many said it will use the same RAGE engine. They might tweak RAGe engine to give off more detail as they did from GTA 3 to Vice City and to San andreas. V will use RAGE, just a tweaked version of it.

After V we will have a very high chance of R* making a whle new engine, thus starting a whole new era due to the fact new consoles are scheduled to be rolled out in 2012 and R can release V and another title in just 2 years time.

I like how your name describes a lot about you...

"That Guy"... we all know one of "those guys" sigh.gif

First Generation:

GTA 1, and two expansions, GTA 2

Second Generation:

GTA III = LC, VC, SA, VCS, LCS, and other hand held games that could easily be regarded as first generation.

Third Generation:

IV, EFLC, Chinatown Wars, ?

That's how I see it/how it seems to be seen, how the stories and stuff all make sense or intertangle, etc.

One thing is sure, they've been calling "the next GTA" "GTA V" since Vice City came out, and another sure thing is that there are more than 6 GTA games.

They change the number whenever they change the game engine.

R* isn't changing the game engine because they just started on RAGE. I read the interview and I thought it was a fake because either Sam or Dan Houser said the next GTA would be V... only saying when it wouldn't be released. I that the interview was fake and I'm pretty sure it is.

CryptReaperDorian

R* now does change the canon with different game engines, but I have a few things to note. Many consider the first GTA and GTA2 to be different generations, but I really don't think they should be categorized completely different. They were the same generation, but a bit better graphics and gameplay (IMO) for GTA2. Despite being different numbers I think they should still be considered canon to each other.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that GTA Advance, GTA LCS, and GTA VCS had a different game engine than GTA III, GTA VC, and GTA SA. They are all still considered to be in the GTA III canon though. This is explained by character tie-ins and such though.

The GTA series goes like this:

GTA(1), GTA London 1969, GTA London 1961, GTA2 (never referenced to "Grand Theft Auto" I believe), GTA III, GTA Vice City, GTA Advance (released a day before GTA SA), GTA San Andreas, GTA Liberty City Stories, GTA Vice City Stories, GTA IV, GTA IV The Lost and Damned, GTA Chinatown Wars, GTA The Ballad of Gay Tony.

The GTA London games are expansions to GTA(1) and The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony are expansions for GTA IV. The expansions (or DLC or episodic content) for GTA IV are also available on a disc called GTA Episodes From Liberty City.

I mean, wasn't GTA 2 3D cars and GTA 1 was sprites, or?

@gta_dog: Azazel was pointing out, rather agreeably, that the numbers have changed to reflect new engines. I was going to point out that really there is probably still a lot of code around from the first game running in IV, let alone the remainders of SA files still there - this is the next version number of GTA, and as it evolves, it makes sense to do the core game, then expand it, then go nuts, then move back to the core again.

I don't see them going back to the core fast - "IV was built to last" - the same way III was, with the same Core features, just in High Definition, in any way we can any of us think compared to III. So I think they'll make a good or fair share of titles for GTA lol. Also, as a person who likes modding games, comparing this one to previous GTA's, I can see they have tuned their already fast production pipeline (compared to the results they produced being massive in comparison to games that take just as long to make).

That means just as fast as you saw those episodes come out they can pump them out their pipeline is THAT tight now, after those episodes. The only thing that needs to stay strong now is the expansion of features being "restored, in HD" to the series and creativity from leadership in their ranks, and speedy, but quality art. It's like everything they did last time could be pictured as nodes connected to the main node "GTA", and now those nodes, in IV, have ALL gotten a few extra nodes under them.

It's no longer a texture, it's a material, with normal maps and specular maps and all kinds of that stuff, em-missive lit objects and all that. The only prelight needed on any model is presumably an ambient light for some center of the float for their in-game system now, sh*t is easier in some areas, but harder in others now. But the things that are harder are easier to do once and reuse compared to how hard it would be to do worlds like liberty city without the things that have been eased.

The engine thing is true, and RAGE2 will probably debut with GTA V tounge.gif who can really tell? But we know V isn't until later:http://www.gta-five.com/

Nope, GTA 2's graphics were basically GTA 1's, only smoother and with better lighting, etc. Point is, everything is sprites except for the map when it comes to GTA 1 and 2.

Yeah I did, and people have already answered the OP's question to the point of exhaustion.

There was no need for me, or anyone else to further discuss the issue, so I responded to a seperate fallacy which stated that GTAV couldn't appear on the current gen consoles.

Another thought is that maybe they ARE done with the IV era, and that TLAD and BoGT are to IV, what VC/SA were to III.

Stupid, perhaps, as these DLC's are hardly as long as SA/VC - but you never know. I still believe they aren't done with IV myself, but, y'know. That's just another way of looking at it.

Hmm I don't think that TLAD and TBOGT are equivalent to Vice City and San Andreas. These DLCs are just expansions, while the others are full games, and very complete (just look at SA).

I look at this the following way: GTA IV is just like GTA III. They just tried for the first time a whole new game engine, they did massive changes in gameplay compared to previous games; it's a relatively short game; only one city was created (even though it's massively detailed); few vehicles and weapons; less things to do like buying houses, businesses, tuning cars, etc. Just like GTA III...

They can now expand what they've created and add more details, more vehicles, bigger cities, more things to do, bigger stories, etc., just like they did with Vice City and San Andreas. There's at least one more Grand Theft Auto game coming that will use RAGE and GTA IV's "game model", and I really think they'll use Vice City again. I have that feeling... and honestly, it would be great. biggrin.gif

Just a little reference, so you don't have to look anywhere, and I'm staying out of this discussion:

GTA: '97/'98

London games: '99

GTA 2: '99

GTA III: '01

GTA VC: '02

GTA SA: '04

Advance: '04

GTA LCS: '06

GTA VCS: '06

GTA IV: '08

TLAD, CTW, and TBOGT: '09
