What's UK like?

Recommended Posts

London is basically pay out of your nutsack for some shabby flat only to get mugged or stabbed one day when commuting to work. It's not exactly the best place to be. The south is pretty expensive in general, and the quality isn't that great down there with a lot of shops in most of the towns closing down. Midlands isn't too bad up around here, you got a good amount of decent towns, things to do etc.

Come to Stoke and you can rent a 2 up 2 down terraced for £275 pcm smile.gif

Its Stoke though, id rather be at Auschwitz.

And people saying stay away from London, well the North is better than the South but its still f*cking sh*t up here. Well around the North West.

I've lived in London all my life and still do, so listen to me.

It smells. Its expensive. Its polluted. Its overcrowded. You'll get stabbed. Its stupidly politically correct. Gordon Brown. Cyclists. Congestion Charge. Oyster cards and travel fares. Boris Johnson. Pretentious twats. Rich twats. Twats in general.

On the plus side, there's always something to do at night. I would stay put if I were you, there really isn't much to see here you couldn't see on holiday.

Personally I would not move from London (maybe Cambridge) I love this town, I recently moved more central.

Tube station 5 mins / 24hr off licence and places to eat. However the rent takes the PISS and my oyster card dribbles money through it

Sure some parts of town can be dog rough, but there is alot of good points too (watching tourists asking where LIE-CESTER square is always amusing!!

Try somewhere oop north!

Agree. I don't understand why the hell you want to move to London in the first place.

Because the South has all the jobs? London more than anywhere else.

All very true. But cyclists, and Gordon Brown are problems everywhere, travel fares are far lower that most other places (for me to catch a bus the 8 miles from the nearest thing vaguely resembling a town to as close to my house as it will get, it would cost me £3.85 ONE WAY, take over an hour, and there's only three busses each way in a whole f*cking DAY.). You won't get stabbed so long as you avoid anywhere that looks like South-Central LA, don't run your mouth off, don't flash cash or possessions and stay out of side streets- roughly the same as any other large city in the UK (in fact places like Bradford, Manchester, Birmingham and even f*cking Milton Keynes have always felt more "dangerous" to me than London has).

As for rich, pretentious twats, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em ph34r.gif

DP ahoy.

True, but the south (particularly south west and east excluding London) for the most part has;

Less crime

Higer pay rates

More avaliable jobs

IMHO worth the extra rental/buying money. As for living costs being higher, that's pretty subjective as well. A burger and a pint in a pub in Gloucester or Portsmouth costs exactly the same as it does in Hull or Sunderland, and I know which pub I'd rather be in (granted, Gloucester is a sh*thole, but Hull is literally the worst place in the UK, period).

Living in places like Exeter that aren't really that desirable is pretty cheap. Better than elsewhere, anyway. Or, like I said, live out in the sticks, pay f*ck all for a gorgeous house and commute. Works out much cheaper.

I've got family in Stoke, and it's one of the most depressing places in the world. It's just so grey and bland and lifeless- to whoever mentioned that lots of shops are shutting in the south, you're right, but they would be shutting in the north if they hadn't gone out of business well before the recession. Case in point- Stoke.

For God sake don't go to London, you'll love Manchester, or Edinburgh.

Edinburgh is lovely, but really damn expensive.

Manchester, along with Cardiff and Liverpool, are three cities I don't understand. Everyone rants and raves about how amazing they are, how great the nightlife is and how you can buy an 8 bedroom house for £42. Yet every time I'm ever there, be it meeting mates or for various bits of work, they're just grey, dull and depressing. All the houses are expensive or sh*t, a lot are both, and the nightlife is fine if you want the same big chains of bars you get in every major town or city, but crap if you don't.

How about Cheltenham? My mate's just bought a 2 bed, 1 bath, reasonably sized terraced house right near the Uni in an all right but not amazing neighbourhood. It's well equipped, with a brand new bathroom and kitchen, and though it was on the market for £132k, she managed to get it closer to £120k.

Just avoid the gorgeous Georgian terraces, they may be stunning but they're £1m+ a pop.

The Midlands is good. I live close to the Welsh border - reasonable prices, no crime and most people are really friendly.

Bullsh*t is there no crime in the Midlands. I live in the East and you at least hear of some sort of crime every other day or so. Hell I live in a village and just a couple weeks ago there were a string of break ins.

How much is 1€ in London pound?

(Seems I cant do pound money logo on this keyboard)

Where you are depends how far your money goes.

1€ is currently about £0.90

A 500ml bottle of coke in a newsagent round here is around £1.20 as a guide. A pint is £3.00 average I'd say. Up town you'd be looking £4.50-£5 for a pint and £1.50 a bottle of coke.

damn in liverpool your looking 80p for a bottle of coke

Oh crime happens everywhere, but the fear-feeling of crime is significantly lower in rural areas than urban areas.

Alot of this derives from the folk there - London's a melting pot, with lots of scummy people on the street. You'll experience and see alot more street crime, addicts and undesirables around.

Burglary, which does happen alot in rural areas, just doesn't invoke as much fear as street crime such as robberies and disorderly behaviour. So generally, people will feel alot safer in rural than urban areas.

Where I live in the Midlands there isn't much crime. I haven't heard of any for a good couple of years. Anyway break-ins aren't as serious as sh*t that goes in in say London or Liverpool. What I'm trying to say that it isn't as troubled as those areas.

Maybe you haven't heard about any within a couple of years because it isn't exactly stabbings and shootings, but its still happening whether you think its serious or not. Its still crime and can effect the area in a huge way if somebody was deciding to move there or not.

Ah come on it's not that bad, I'm sure the mortality rate is at least slightly lower here. But really, OP, don't come to Stoke unless you really need to or are incredibly fond of different shades of grey.

According to the Statistics Office, Mole Valley in Surrey is the safest place in the UK.

I can see that, but can imagine that burglaries are higher there than they are around here. True, both places are were the rich seem to have homes (well Gloucestershire/West Oxfordshire/Herefordshire seems to be popular with the wealthy) but Surrey is reasonably close to London- plus there's a complete lack of main roads here so even if you did want to go burgle someone, you'd never find their house!

I was noting pictures of my sister and her husband right in front of Stonehenge. They've seen more or Europe then I ever will. It seems. My sister's husband is from over seas, so they do travel a bit.

I've only been a few States away. My impression is that the UK gets a smattering of sun, and cold sun at that, mostly pretty dreary. Like Seattle what with all their rain!
