What's UK like?

Recommended Posts

Hi. As it was announced today, Irish government is cutting down Civil Servants salaries by 5-10%.

My mum was unlucky to be the one that gets 10% cut off, which means that all the budget costs are making her salary 900 Euro less than in January this year.

So we thought about moving to the UK.

What is the rental cost in London like?

And the cost of living?

I'm kinda interested as 3 of my friends actually live there (really old mates) but I got used to Ireland for 6 years now.

Depends on where in london,

City Centre? Outer London?

Why not elsewhere? Manchester/Birmingham/Liverpool/Newcastle/Leeds?

rightmove.co.uk will give you an idea of rental costs.

As for living here, it's like Ireland, just with real money. And less irish...

London is far, far, far, far more expensive than anywhere in Ireland other than perhaps Dublin which I know first hand is extremely pricey.

And I mean this in both rental and living costs. The South East in general is pretty hard on your wallet.

Sorry to hear about your mum's pay cut too. Tough times at the moment.

I think you'd be more f*cked in London than where you are now really. London is really expensive even if its just out of the city. Why not look elsewhere in the UK? Although to be fair its pretty much a sh*t hole in some places. And with our own job situation being terrible at the minute you shouldn't move unless your mum can secure a better paying job than what she has in Ireland.

I know this will seem tacky considering I live here but what about Belfast? It's a really up and coming city with loads of new buildings etc being developed. It's near Ireland so you could meet up with old friends etc. It's much better than it was before. icon14.gif

Seriously, if you're looking for a place that's easier on the wallet to live after your mam's paycut don't go to London. Come somewhere in the North, things seem to be considerably cheaper up here than in the south. On the other hand, many in the south say that this is balanced out by a lower quality of life, I wouldn't know any different though, having only ever lived in the North.

I wouldn't say a lower quality of life, but it's certianly lower in terms of salaries up north.

Pay in the South, particularly South East, is far higher than elsewhere, and usually partially ballances out the higher living costs.

That said, I'm in my mid-20's, a graduate and employed and though it would cost me about twice what it does to rent here to live in London- I wouldn't be earning twice what I do here though.

If you want to rent on the cheap, go out in the sticks. I live about 10 miles from the nearest thing close to a town, and rent a 3-bed, 2-bath recently renovated 1820's farmhouse converted into two houses for £650 a month. There's even a pub down the road...although I end up on a night out in London at least a couple of times a month- a leftover from living there for a year- can't get away from the place for too long

My mum just applied for a job in London, although I don't know the exact location. I think it's near Canary Wharf or something.

Our rent for today is 1200 euro for a 3 bedroom, 1 bedroom semi-detached house which is quite small.

Milk for example is €1.49

Bread - 59c - €1.80

Meat is quite pricey as well.

Renting a 3-bed, 1 bathroom house in an area of London which doesn't look like a ghetto is around £1800 a month, minimum. For that, you'll get sod all. Want to live in the centre, west or central-north? Double that.

I paid £1500 a month for a year on a 1 bed, 1 bathroom flat in a new development just outside Chiswick- that was stupidly cheap for the quality of where I was living, although it was tiny. A mate of mine is living just outside Clapham (1-bed studio flat, reasonably well equipped, £800 a month- but it's basically just one room, with a bathroom and a screen to seperate the bedroom) and my ex lives in White City near Shepherds Bush (she pays over £1200 a month for a (nice) one bed flat in a reasonably ropey area)

Sounds about right to me. If you're willing to commute and look South of the river around Croydon you're still looking £400+ for a room or £1100+ for a decent enough 3-bed. If you don't mind a sh*thole, £850-900 for a 2 up 2 down terrace with extension for the 3rd bedroom.

Newry, Hell f*cking yeah! biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

I'd rather take the trip up there now than going into Dublin town which is just a bus ride for me.

Everything here is like 5x what it used to be. mad.gif

How much is 1€ in London pound?

(Seems I cant do pound money logo on this keyboard)

Where you are depends how far your money goes.

1€ is currently about £0.90

A 500ml bottle of coke in a newsagent round here is around £1.20 as a guide. A pint is £3.00 average I'd say. Up town you'd be looking £4.50-£5 for a pint and £1.50 a bottle of coke.

Come to Stoke and you can rent a 2 up 2 down terraced for £275 pcm smile.gif

Sweet Jesus! How much would you say an average salary is? I can't even find a room for that round here.

EDIT: Likewise Bendy. Europe is so expensive these days. I feel violated whenever I go on holiday now.

Ha - it wouldnt be nice, but if you were desperate.

The going rate is £475 - £575 pcm for a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom new build apartment.

Average salary I would say is £16k - £20k around here.

Come to Wales bro!

He didn't mention sheep as a requirement, Ry tounge.gif

London is very expensive mate. I stay with family in Reading quite often which is 50 mins out of London (21 miles away I think?) and even there's expensive enough. In the capitol, I've spent £2 on a bottle of WATER (which granted, was in the tube) but even normal shops are expensive as hell.

The quality of life in London, unless you earn about 100K+ a year, would be pretty ropey.

Also, getting a job in the civil service in the UK took me about a year, and I'm a British citizen AND that was in 2007 whenever the CS were receiving a fraction of the applications we're receiving now from the many thousands who were made redundant - plus you'll have to go through all the emigration bollocks before they'll even vet you for a role in the CS (which takes about 6 months).
