Constant crashing/problems.

Okay.. I've about had it with this crashing. I've tried everything, and it still happens, infact I've been trying for over 8 months now, even bought a new computer!

There doesn't seem to be a trigger to this crash, it just crashes when it wants to. Sometimes I don't even make it out of the safehouse! Other times I could play for an hour, sometimes 10 - 20 minutes... well, you get the picture. And I will be doing different things every time this crash occurs, this makes it hard to find out what the problem is.

I have all the latest drivers/patches/updates/everything. I should also mention that a recent driver from ATI messed up my computer! GTA IV now lags like a constipated person trying to take a dump. angry.gif

Just so people don't give me solutions I've already heard, this is what I have tried:

  • -memrestrict command line (with NO other command lines)
  • xLiveless.dll
  • -nomemrestrict command line (with no other command lines)
  • Windows Vista - Ultimate (SP1) / Windows XP - Professional (SP3) : (both 32-bit)
  • Running as admin (Windows Vista)

And my computer specs:

  • ATI Radeon 4670 HD w/ 512 MB of vRAM
  • 2 GB of RAM
  • AMD Phenom II X3 710 Processor @ 2.6 GHz
  • Currently on Windows XP - Professional (SP3)

I've tried tweaking the grapics to the lowest possible settings, and the highest possible settings that my computer can handle, same problem.

One thing I sometimes notice right before it crashes is the game will quickly lag for a second, then things stop working.. like the graphics stop streaming, peds don't move, etc. Then when I move into the areas where the graphics weren't loaded it crashes. That's happened a couple of times, too. But most of the time it's a random crash. :S

I really hope someone can help me here.. the GTA series is one of the very few games that I actually buy, but I must say I'm really dissapointed this time. Can't wait to see what a fail Red Dead Redemption is going to be. >.>

I'm just wondering, can you see this

Remove the latest GPU driver and install an older one, I suggest 9.8 or 9.6 (guide on the subject in the FAQ). Have you defragged the drive?

Gah, I guess I missed a few things.. I've tried that too, it made it worse, you could tell instantly when it refreshed my memory, the game started running really bad =\ Well if it comes down to a hardware problem, then f**k GTA and R*, I'm not wasting more hard earned dollars for this.

Your specs are not that bad, if you just add another 1GB stick of RAM-(it will cost you around $19.82 at Wal-Mart), you should be able to run the game (at least on low settings with no to little lag.)

RAM upgrades are pretty much the cheapest upgrades you can do to a PC, so that should be the first thing you try. Plus, if you have Vista 32-bit, you can go up to 4GB RAM, whereas with XP 32-bit, the max it will recognize is 3GB. Just a heads up.

... what?

32 bit OS can address only 4GB RAM, this includes VRAM and other ranges reserved by the system. 32 GB Vista may *recognize* that you have $GB RAM installed, but it will not be using it all.

I have had the same problems, such as crashing to black screen. Unfortunatley nobody gave me a decent answer because someone moved my thread so it couldn't be commented on anymore. My game has only just started locking up, and the only changes I have made are through mods and commmand lines.

Try reinstalling the game and deleting all commandlines. I would do it as well except I can't install GTA on my disk drive, I have to borrow someone elses (I always get a data2.cab error during installation). For me, cleanmem did not work either.

*Edit: can people please stop telling those with problems to buy new hardware. It's plainly obvious you have no idea what the problem is, but you act like you know and then tell someone to waste hundreds of dollars on a new rig when the problem has nothing to do with hardware.

Thanks for the info, jamjam. I do remember using those command lines instantly after I installed IV, as I was using them on Vista before I got XP. (It was slightly improving my performance on Vista, but I noticed I don't really need them on XP)

Anyway, I'll try that tomorrow and see how it goes. It's getting late here. tounge.gif

peace

PS: Going back to the 9.8 driver solved the lag problems, thanks.

Just before I try that xliveless thing by putting the .dll file in to the game folder, I notice it says to "remove the asi loader if there is one"

Don't really know what and asi loader is so if someone could help me identify if I have one and how to remove it that'd be great!!

Cheers
