I'm 16.Moved to London about 3 weeks ago.I'm currently waiting for a letter from secondary school(I need to finish last year) but what to do now,sit on my parents necks 3-6 months?!hell I have to find myself a room and a job to pay rent.I worked about week as spammer(leaflet distributor, and unofficial ofcourse) that was pretty cool, but they finished order and that's it.I heard I could get a part-time job if I would study in college, but I can't find free courses...so question is: can I have official part time job only by studying in college, and is it possible at all?in jobcentre they said I need some kinda insuirance(don't remember exactly) but I doubt they will do it becouse I'm not 18 yet confused.gif .sorry for posting here but yahoo answers didn't fit biggrin.gif

Well, first things first, you need a rigidly clean look appearance.

Keep fit and eat right and once again double check all the manners and hygiene.

Your local area is the place to ask around, do not wine because everyone hates that and especially employers, eagerness and goodwill for all is a win. icon14.gif

edit: Yet you are in a completely different nation and from nation to nation these things have other little rules and exceptions. Ask your well respected elders for advice and they will note that you have the sense to ask, this is mostly universal.

Why would you have to bother your parents for 3-6 months? You're 16 so why are you trying to find somewhere to live apart from your parents? Also where did you live before London? The job centre people can't help you until you turn 18 which is quite far off. So you can't find any free courses yet. If you've gone through high school over here in the UK and have your GCSE's then you can apply to go to college (which would be free) and pick something you want to do there. Also, if you go to college and your parents earn less than £30,000 a year then you can also apply for EMA. This means if you get into college and go to all of your classes and don't skip, then depending on how much your parents earn you can get yourself £30 a week just by going to college. This would solve the problem of trying to get a job.

Intern or apprentice, likely no pay, but experience at any rate. When I went to school, I was not charged by my folks for room and board, however, if not going to school, you needed income and were dealing with a small rent. Now, of course, for me, over $700 a month ain't easy to deal with while looking for a new job, have to start making entry level pay again.

You aren't even going to get a chance to get into college if you haven't got any GCSE's (or equivalent of them) You need them to be able to go. So if you haven't got them, or anything that qualifies for the level of GCSE's then you're going to have to get them. Which means going back to school and taking them. Which from what I remember is about 2 years before you take the actual exams. Now you can go on some kind of courses to get the grades, but it will be a shorter period of time before you take them (which really, you shouldn't do since you've got a better chance at getting better grades if you go back to school)

And it sounds like you've just moved over here from another country. And if you haven't got a National Insurance number card, then from what I know you can't legally apply for a job (unless of course you have some kind of Visa for that) Which if its the same as the US visa then you have to have been in the country for at least 2 or 3 months before they'd give you said NI number. So no card, no job.

I'm not totally sure on that though since I've been a UK citizen since birth so I don't know the ins and outs of the UK Immigration stuff.

Not a lot of people will agree with me I expect.

My advise is too milk your parents for as long as you can. I left school at 16, within a week I had a full time job and have been for nearly 6 years now. If I could turn back time I would have stayed at home for longer, and had some fun. Once you start work, you start getting bills, and it all goes downhill from there until you retire!

But what ever you do, good luck mate. icon14.gif

You'll be needing a national insurance number to work in a large quantity of places in the UK. I'm not sure on your exact situation but I'm not 100% sure if you're eligible for one. If you're not, you're going to find legitimate employment in the UK a nightmare.

Mark speaks the truth. Until you're leagally allowed to work in UK you're pretty much radioactive to all most all employers, especially employers who'd treat you with respect.

One point I would add is that when applying have a very polished CV. Not too long, its not an essay but similarly something which immediately lets an employer know what your strenghts are....not to be rude biut many jobs will require you to speak English to a good level. Especially if you're looking for work, like most 16 year olds, as a waiter or a sales assistant, Jobs in which you'll have to talk alot.
