I was just digging through cases of 3.5 disks looking for a specific piece of history...but now I'm distracted by this disk.

I need to find a drive.  What the hell did I have in sh*t.ini?

I'm going to date that disk somewhere in the mid to late 90s.  I'm no expert but pr0n hadn't had the full blown internet explosion just yet.  I think people might have still been paying for pr0n on the internet then.

Plus...what could it hold?  A few low res pictures?  Hahaha

The good news is I have a bunch a pile of old PCs and I just confirmed there are tons of 3in drives in the pile.  I plugged a few what looked complete boxes in and none of them booted.  I'm going to have to spend the time and slap together whatever pieces might be working to build out an old Intel box that can read 3.5 in disks. (In my attic I have a 5 1/4 if I want to go nuts).

Some more pics of history I took last night.

Oh my.  Winmodem and the days before Photoshop.  This is the futile box.  It also has all those MaxBlaster disks that came with hard drives, joystick drivers, mouse drivers... etc etc

D9x5pSZ.jpg

The microsoft box.  Has all the win3.1 disks, first release of Office, etc etc.

YYWzHor.jpg

Serious classics in the games box.

Ya'll remember Zip disks?  I love this one.  "Some good c++".

This is my example picture of why it isn't important to  collect physical games in today's world.  Everything is this box is an important entry into the history of games.  None of them playable...all worthless.

Did Google change their search engine layout/colors? From what I remember, they used to have the URL in green, below the blue title link.

This is what I get now on a Windows 10 PC. My Macbook Pro still shows the old interface though.

Is RAM above 4000 MHz even worth it? It seems the price ramps up significantly beyond that. Also, as far as I can tell, 4000 MHz RAM doesn't come in 16 GB sticks, which sucks if you have a 4 slot mobo and want 64 GB of system memory. I guess 32 will do as well.

I'm planning on rebuilding this PC with an i9 9900K. Keeping the PSU and GPU plus HDD.

It depends what you're doing really. For most stuff, there's really very little impact at all, it's largely just a ploy to get gamers to spend more because that's the group willing to drop tonnes of money on upgrades in hopes of a FPS boost. Is it really any wonder why the main brands pumping these kits out are Corsair, G.Skill, and Kingston? All gaming oriented brands. If you're gaming on an APU (god help you), which you're not, you'll get some FPS boost. On a dedicated GPU though? The difference is going to be minimal.

Not really since you're on Intel and even if you were on a ryzen chip, anything above 3800mhz right now is kinda pointless for most use cases. Unless, of course, you're really into overclocking, but if you were, chances are you'd just buy lower speed ram and overclock that too.

Just in case you're dead set on 4000mhz 16gb modules.

Tbh, you'll probably notice more of a benefit from stepping up from ddr3 to ddr4.

Late reply but I definitely agree with you on that. It's the same reason I'm not as into physical as I was a while back. Nothing worse than digging out a disk, putting it in and realizing you wasted your time with a paperweight and the time spent digging it out I most likely could have just clicked an install button and already be playing. Plus, my older games fit perfectly on my thumb drives and externals and those take up almost no space in the one drawer I keep them in.

Yeet. Those are a bit pricey. 8 GB modules are fine.

Hi, I was lucky enough to stumble across an abandoned computer out the middle of nowhere with an Intel Core I3 3220 Processor that I was able to salvage, I was wondering if anyone is able to tell me if this CPU might still be able to work or is it too far gone? It was surrounded by lots of dirt in the Motherboard but it's fan / heatsink was sitting on top of the CPU enclose so that probably protected it a little bit, I've given it the best clean I could. Without putting it into an actual motherboard I can't tell if it works, I had to chuck the motherboard as it was too rusted and beyond repair.

The reason I ask is notice in the blow photo how there's not some "gold spots" on the CPU, wondering if anyone here is technical to tell me if that's bad.

It had a Radeon 7470 2GB GPU that I was able to salvage as well but I think that's beyond the stages of working in the state I found this PC in, and that GPU was a pain in the neck to come out as it had an attached VGA adaptor to it that's round handles were too rusted to turn.

It might be still operational as CPUs are very durable, but seeing as it's pretty much worthless now I wouldn't even dare testing it. There's no point in risking breaking the motherboard if the CPU turns out to be defective in some way.

I'm trying to work out where the PSU is on that. It doesn't look like there's enough room in the side chamber for a standard sized one.

Definitely requires a SFF psu

Yup, it has a spot for a SFF PSU behind the mobo tray, just like the Q37 for example. I love that concept to be honest.
