No Love For

This thread is to revise all praise, and critique of the Seattle rockers Pearl Jam, a band that's success followed the shadow of Nirvana, but in many ways was more of a real rock and roll band. We see Eddie Vedder praising the Who more then ever, and it shows his appreciation of the very roots of modern rock, not so far off in left field as they may seem. In some ways, Pearl Jam bring a bit of Bob Dylan blending of folk to the rock and grunge scene.

Pick out their best stuff, what irks you about PJ, Do they still "have it?"

Here's a studio version of a track I have live from 1995, on a rare boot CD. The most excellent DEAD MAN WALKING. More to come....

Just got into to them after I bought the Ten Legacy Edition Box, this band is really good, especially when it comes to live shows. They had the honor to close down the Philadelphia Spectrum at the end of October, and over four nights, they played around 140 different songs!!!!!!

Didn't like many of their albums. I had a listen of Vitalogy years ago because this stubborn bitch refused to be with me unless I gave one album of theirs a chance. I listened to it through once and told her she's a f*cking idiot the day after and that she can shove the CD up her own arse sideways.

So yeah, my experience with Pearl Jam is tainted at best, but they aren't really a band I could get into.

Seriously man, give Ten a listen. Pretty much the only album of theirs worth listening to and very good overall.

That is a rather weak album, VS was better, and the live CD I have is Oxygen's release "No F**King Messiah Part 2", all live cuts with guests and cover songs, it's well worth your time.

From that period, also live, also on that CD; Joey Ramone and PJ cover the Dead Boys classic

Sonic Reducer.

I'm currently in a love affair with them. Downloaded their entire studio discography including Backspacer which released in September.

I f*cking love 'em. In particular the original lineup, with Dave on drums. I miss Dave... But yeah, these dudes are just awesome. There isn't an album they've put that I haven't totally dug. They have such a variety of songs of different influences and sounds. And Ten, their debut, is a masterwork. One album I would choose if I could only listen to one for the rest of my days.

Dave is smoking while he's drumming, f*cking great.

And another performance of Black, years later. Very intimate, sing-along included.

I don't know what formula they set out on, but it was not seemingly the typical "grunge", and Dave Grohl, when he did ProBot, for me, that was out of left field and a surprise, as he claimed paying tribute to all the metal bands he felt influenced him, but you hear very little of that in Nirvana and Seattle's scene was "seen" as the downfall of hair bands and metal of the early 90s.

Pearl Jam's relationship with the Who, they've really addressed some early roots inspiration and I liked they even brought Townshend's Broken Glass solo hits to their live set. It was pretty refreshing to see from a modern band. The Who were really early 60s pioneers in the groundwork for rock music

Tsar_Smirnoff

They're one of my favorite bands of the 90's.....but I like there more obscure songs that aren't played every other day on the radio("Alive", "Jeremy", and "Evenflow"). Some of my favorites include "Porch", "Leash", "Go", and "Animal". I never really kept up with their late 90's records....has anyone heard the new album they've released here in the past couple of months?

If I had to choose a favorite album, it would have to "Vs." from 1993. My sister had that album(tape cassette) when she was going to high school, and I remember I inherited her tape player about two years later and listening to "Vs.", Weezer's "Blue Album", and Nirvana's "In Utero" constantly. biggrin.gif Keep in mind I was about seven years old back then(1995). I have an obsession with 90's alternative/indie rock as anyone who has been keeping up with me in the "Rate the Song Above You" thread can see. It brings back a lot of childhood nostalgia. smile.gif

Pearl Jam are great. I only had two albums when I listened to them though. I think they're just good all-round ROCK band. Why Go is one of my favs and Rearview Mirror.

I remember some sh*t about them bing pissed off at Ticketmaster so they decided to only play at venues where Ticketmaster didn't have the monopoly which kind of screwed them over as they had to play outside major cities. To top it off, they got pissed off at pressure from their old label Sony so they moved to an independant label which eventually go bought by Sony. Now this is goin back years in my memory so I could be mistaken but it's something like that.

Yep, yeah, they were at some award show arranged before hand, reported on MTV, where they were seated next to the guys from TicketMaster, surprised fisticuffs didn't break out, like Kid Rock and Tommy Lee!?!!

Another time, it was MTV's Unplugged, where mid-song, Eddie made a statement about abortion and Women's rights. For a guy, sticking up for the woman's side, it was somewhat unusual. Pro-Choice, where as I'm a bit of a Pro-Lifer. myself.

It took away from what should have focused on the music. Other times he's not gotten on some political soapbox, that was the old Eddie Vedder.

Saw them last month. During the first encore, Eddie read out a letter from a paralympian from our city about how she might not make it to London, and he said that he and the band would help her out.

Nice fellas. The concert was beyond awesome as well, amazing 2.5 hour set just flew by.
