Slow Dial-up

Get broadband?

In all seriousness, dial-up is dial-up no matter what you try nothing will make it any faster. Most typical dial-up connections will never get above 50kbps (6.25KB/sec.) Connections can be as low as 20kbps (2.5KB/sec.) but the typical range is 40(5KB/sec)-50kbps (6.25KB/sec) with 44kbps being average (5.5KB/sec.)

Looking to game online on dial-up? With an average of 400ms+ ping response times dial-up is almost certainly a no-go for any modern multiplayer game.

What is holding you back from getting broadband? You can get very cheap and the slowest DSL available, which would only cost a little more than dial-up, and be miles better than dial-up. Are you in a rural area?

^^^ almost that, I live in a small town (Aquiraz), in the metropolitan area of a state capital (Fortaleza, Ceará), but things just take ages to come here, just for an example, I had to go to Fortaleza to get my GTA games, and is a very rare sight around here a building with more than 3 floors undevelopment as it's finest

anyway, back on-topic, I just asked my dad, he just don't give a sh*t to the slowness (he always say: "It's slow? you can't stand that? just turn it off!") broadband is just too expensive here

and one day I miraculously could play Unreal Tournament '99 multiplayer, the ping rate was a shame, but I could

The only thing that would work is to get another modem and dailup connection and combine them to double your bandwidth...

Nothing else will work.

^ This.

You will need 2 modems, 2 Dial-up accounts, and 2 phone lines. Make sure your ISP supports multi-linking or bonding. Just go to Windows Help Manager. In the index box type multi-link, select multi-link from the list, and click display. The directions will show you from there. You don't need any special phone line to do this. I guarantee you will see amazing results once everything is up and running.

The two modems will act as one giving you a better upload and download speed.

Here's one of the cheapest Dial up ISP's in the market., that you can use as a second cheap ISP.

Budget Dialup

Staring at $5.00 they also service Brazil. smile.gif

I did not know that, two modems working in tandem? On two seperate PCI slots, on two phone lines, working?!?

Here's my own suggestion... Best, or FIRST thing to try is disconnect, and reconnect, add to that tact, new phone numbers for the ISP dialing in point, make sure they are all reasonably close.

Then run all software maintaining provisions in the OS, clearing caches, virtual RAM, allocation of files on the HDD physically. All data is stored here and there, virtual RAM uses the HDD to store things, so making it easier managed by the OS will speed things along.

The cache often prompts when full or you get a message from Windows that the Virtual RAM is clogging, You get this if you surf for some time on dialup and it's normally BIG files like flash video, etc.

Music files as well.

I spend a bit of time after each session drop and dragging video or webpages stored in OS' cache off to the desktop and other folders to use offline, then you can clear them the normal way and save what you want in a traditional sense. I did this with the Wiki Apple ][ webpage so I could read the content in the car on my laptop, and I remained offline!

Speaking of dialup legacy tech, AT&T in the States here is showing a new ad, where they promote Broadband and Wifi for everyone in America in the next 5 years, and they begin that add with the familiar log on dialup tones! They claim in 2000, only 3 or 5% of Americans were on a Broadband Network! I remember I didn't know much about them, but in my Microcomputer Dictionary, there is coverage of what Broadband is and it's relation to cable TV, it's origins.. That dates to 1980/81, BTW!!

Well wouldn't having to have 2 phone lines sort of defeat the purpose for improving his speeds under current conditions?

I mean, if he can't even get broadband access, why would his house have two phone lines? That would cost a good bit too.

I tie up the incoming line when I use 56K, so I doubt that's an option for me. but if I encounter problems as I am, reconnecting CAN help, as well, try swapping your computer you use online, if it's a lappy, clear all the programs and files off the dang thing, use it only for surfing!

I would have to agree with you on this one. A second line might be expensive where he lives. But it's the best solution in his circumstances. As he has stated their is no broadband service in his area.

All it would take is to order another line thought his existing phone service. The technician will come by check his NIC (Outside box) and connect a few cables and activate a new line.

You probably aren't aware of it, but the phone wiring in your/his house can already handle two separate lines. A single line requires two wires, or conductors. Standard residential phone cable contains two pairs of wires, which is enough for two separate lines. The first line is usually made up of the wires covered with red and green insulation; the yellow and black wires serve as second line. So their's no need for an additional physical line installation. So basically all is going to cost is for the activation, which might be pretty expensive overseas. IDK

Anyways, just trying to help, hope someone can provide him a better solution. The guy is on Dial up man, how is he suppose to get his game on?

Yeah I know about inside wiring usually having the capability of at least 2 phone lines. A few years back I wired my whole house with 8-strand CAT5 wiring for support of up to 4 phone lines. Anyway yeah I just don't see multi-line dialup being very cost-effective. He said broadband is too expensive, and his dad doesn't care about the speed, so I would assume that another line is out of the question.

Obama here in the USA, he also claimed to make high speed Internet accessible for everyone, but that was months ago, and only AT&T are mentioning it lately, but they propose to support the initiative, which sounds good still. Hopefully other countries can follow suit, it would make the 56K modem legacy for sure!

Strange you should mention that?

I received a flyer in the mail today which states, AT&T/SBC supposedly will be charging only $20 per month for ADSL2+ (Fastest DSL you can get) in the USA. Now I don't know if that's only a promotion or if it's a new standard price. Hell! I called them up and upgraded my package. I just have to wait 5-7 business days for equipment. Though I'm still planning to use my own. I'm not to fond of those 2WIRE modem/wireless G WIFI routers. My current setup is all Wireless N.

Anyways! If this is only a promotion, the moment they jack up my bill, I'll go back to my normal broadband connection. sneaky2.gif

Hey SanAndreasManiacHow R U man yes Dial Up is worst Connection I Had Dial Up 1 year Ago then i got Wireless 256kbps but these two are very Slow. You should try to Get any Broadband Connection. Look man i know Broadband is very Expensive but you get a lower rate broadband like 512kbps etc. This will be Cheap but it will work Very Better Than Dial Up. Try to get a lowest cost Broadband.

like i have 2MBPS ADSL Broadband Connection my Download speed is 230Kbps and if i watch Video On Youtube it receive Normally 980kbps data in one second and also my Upload speed is 180kbps i pay 18$ per Month For it.

On Topic: You should Try to get 512KBPS broadband connection

I can't afford it, but let's assume AT&T who are airing constant adverts about Broadband help bring awareness AT LEAST to the need to retrofit Broadband in place of dialup Networking at the same costs, I mean $20 a month for instance, something TRULY AFFORDABLE. Dialup should be phased out as NTSC and analog TV, tape and audio, though I don't support doing away with analog audio and video, obviously, but it has happened in the tech-shift.

I would try as well, what I do is work on a better physical connection at the end of the lines (the telephone connections, pull the wires for instance, the small metal contacts out so they make a better physical connection, or while mated, you could move them around in the socket if it's loose to find the best position, notice how things fill in loading a web page, you will notice a difference I suspect.

Wiggle that terminal connected phone jack in your computer, mine seemed to lag over years of use, etc. It can cause you to lose a connection or it can improve things! haha Then, one trick I still use is pressing the space bar, it actually helps the computer force a page opening more quickly, or you can try a HDD based activity, if one thing you initiated is halting for some reason, opening a new window or shifting among two or three tasks can help it to work, I'm not sure what's behind that, but if you open a media player and play a file, aside from changing the progress, it can kill some time as well!

It may hamper speed in some regard, I notice Cache often fills up quickly with the media loading vid flash files and you have some pages online open.
