4 police officers shot dead in coffee shop

Recommended Posts

Lakewood, Washington (CNN) -- Four Lakewood police officers were fatally shot Sunday in what police said was an ambush in a coffee shop.

The officers were sitting in the coffee shop before the start of their shifts, reading on their computers, when the shooting occurred, Sheriff's Department spokesman Ed Troyer said. Authorities believe the officers were meeting and going over cases or doing paperwork, he said.

A gunman came inside and shot all four officers, Troyer said. Two coffee shop employees and other customers inside the shop were unharmed, said Troyer, who said the shooting "was a targeted, selected ambush."

"As you can imagine, they are traumatized," he said of those inside the coffee shop. "Some are in shock."

Families of the officers have been notified, Troyer said. All of the officers -- three males and a female -- were in uniform, wearing vests and had marked patrol cars parked outside, he said.

A $10,000 reward was offered for information leading to an arrest, Troyer said.

Police are looking for one man in connection with the attack, which happened at about 8 a.m., Troyer said. The suspect is described as an African-American man, between 5 feet 7 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a black coat and blue jeans, with a "scruffy" appearance, he said. The man is believed to have fled the coffee shop on foot, he said.

Authorities are not ruling out the possibility that a second person was involved in the attack, Troyer said.

"We're doing everything we can," Troyer said. Authorities were conducting searches in numerous locations, he said, and dogs had been brought in to attempt to track the suspect.

A couple of blocks surrounding the coffee shop were cordoned off. Several other police agencies were on scene to assist.

There were no known threats against police before the incident, Troyer said.

Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, in a statement, said she was "shocked and horrified" at the shootings.

"I offer whatever support is needed to the Pierce County Sheriff in their search for the perpetrator," Gregoire said.

Lakewood is about 40 miles south of Seattle and 10 miles southwest of Tacoma.

Bystanders gathered outside the Forza Coffee Company, some of them in tears as they spoke to CNN affiliate KING.

The coffee shop is on the edge of McChord Air Force Base. Spokesman Bud McKay said the base was not shut down, but security was ramped up around the perimeter as a precaution.

The military has offered assistance to police, he said, but it has not been requested.

Thoughts? It strikes me that only policemen were shot. What kind of motivation would you need to do such a thing?

Copycat of that Fort Hood thing? But with cops instead of soldiers?

Perhaps an unstable figure who wanted to kill a large group of people but lacked the suicidal instinct of most spree killers?

I doubt it's an organised crime thing. Killing the police is a no-no for them, right?

Kind of caught this half way through it being told while flicking through the news channels. Sucks really especially since it was in a coffee shop off duty. The only thing I can think of it being planned is maybe these 3 cops were apart of a connection to do with previous arrests of his friends, or on going investigations to do with him or people he knew.

Hard to say, but I think that having several marked police cars outside might signal that police are inside the coffee shop.

Really though it doesn't seem logical to go around carrying a gun with you all day in the hopes of seeing a group of cops. Especially them being in a coffee shop before they need to work.

Who knows why would anyone do such a thing. Maybe those 4 cops were involved in something illegal or maybe they made the wrong people angry, or maybe it was just a lunatic cop killer. There could be a million reasons for this.

There was a series of cases in the 90s in Washington DC where an armed gunman was going around shooting police officers on duty, in their cars, with a fully automatic weapon. At all times of night or day.

So yeah, someone carrying a weapon in hopes of finding a police officer to use it on isn't really that much of a stretch honestly.

Let's put it this way: What are the chances that all four of these officers have some kind of connection with this individual, and that just by coincidence all four of them were at the same place and location.

That is a whole lot less simple than a guy that wanted to off some cops, or just a guy that wanted to off someone and had the cops presented to him as an opportunity. Though I'm sure not many people in this thread would admit to it, but cops aren't really held in high regard amongst all sects of society, and many people who savor the idea of shooting one or four of them.

HolyGrenadeFrenzy

This really gets me curious about what they were investigating.

That does hold the possiblity for motive.

If that is the case, I suppose we may see how intelligent this individual(s) is/are and whether they can cover their tracks very well. First things first if they want the attention off of the case the party or parties involved will need to make it look like something else and continuing a killing spree on police seems like a very likely choice.

I'm just claiming that just because someone goes on a killing spree of police does not mean that there is not another motive besides a random decision about the action. An ambush suggests planning and planning only occurs so many times before it is a program. Now, I am not suggesting it is any kind of government program yet a program can be put together by anyone.

It really does draw my attention to the course of studies and the cases they were attached to, though.

This occured 8 blocks from where I live and a mile from where I work. I've never seen so many police helicopters in the air at once.

The generic description of the suspect given by police is already creating racial tensions.

Early 30's

Black

Scruffy hair

nice, thats literally 80% of the population of Tacoma.

I'm just worried that the police are going to jump the gun and beat the crap out of a innocent man and then the white minority around here (including me) is in deep sh*t.

It's called karma. ph34r.gif

Not necessarily, the motives of such a situation are not really bound by karmic or mystical forces. That is a presumption that disallows for the more simplistic finding of motive.

Sure, it's all on the wheel and it all comes around.

Yet do we know that these particular officers were into any form of crooked or corruptions?

At this point is it not just as likely that they just ran across the wrong person to investigate or came too close to some sensitive matter in an investigation or something like that?

Revenge is a powerful motive yet there are more motives available than revenge or karmic debt, either one, at this point.

If we were taking bets I would put at least fifty cents on the fruitcake off his medication...but not all of my stash until more investigation takes place and the evidence surfaces and is in.

News Update!

Ok then Tupac. What have police ever done to you?

I disapprove of 90% of what the police do on duty, that said murdering them is not the logical response to that. Some people (with mental problems I imagine) think differently, look at Timothy McVeigh, he hated the government. What was his natural response to that? Blow up a federal building and kill hundreds of random people.

So I imagine that's the absolutist mentality going on here. Is it just me or is Washington state loaded with cop killers?

General Goose

While police forces as a whole may be corrupt, taking it out on random police officers (or even taking it out on corrupt officers in that way) is pretty much 100% unacceptable. They are normal people like you and me.

Damn, what a scary motherf*cker. If he were a character in a movie I'd probably label him a badass from appearance alone.

Surrounded and shot... yet he escaped? He's a f*cking urban Rambo.

Time to put everything into a secure position and listen carefully to the sounds of the city. icon14.gif

It is not time to go to a masquerade party in a cop uniform! icon13.gif

Let me get this straight: If someone in a certain group did something wrong to you, then its totally justifiable to take it out on random members of the same organization?

I know the answer to this, since I am asking on GTANet, but are some of you completely f*cking loony sociopaths?

dog_day_sunrise

I just noticed someone claimed that the police are corrupt.

Really, no. Not in any properly developed Western nation.

No more corrupt than the muppet journalists who write the headlines, anyway.

This makes me want to listen to

Who gives a sh*t? seriously, I think I care more about Tiger Woods' car accident than I do four random people that I have never met.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is a product of the current generation. Human life is ALWAYS worth more then celebrity news and anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't deserve to be breathing.

Aaaaand, the spiral of hypocritical devaluations of human life continues.

That's not to say I don't think Jake's a moron. I do. But he has a right to breathe.

If this killer has any brains he'll kill himself rather than getting taken in by the cops. I get the feeling that they'll "take their time" arresting him. And I don't blame him.

All police try to do is save us from the bottom-feeders and lowlife degenerates who prowl our streets. So to be killed in this sordid manner is awful. God only knows how their families feel right now.
