Possible to downgrade to 1.0.4.0?

Recommended Posts

I've just tried downgrading without reinstallation and as sjaak327 predicted it gives lots of unexpected complications. In my case the Menu dissapeared... LOL I wouldn't try it if I were you - you have to reinstall the whole game.

The link in the post d4v1d linked to has expired

(ignore the SecuLauncher.exe as it's just renamed)

There is a total of 732 files and folders present in patch 5 that aren't in patch 4. Hence, if you install 4 over 5, you will have mixed files with the old exe version.

Again, files that are most likely to break your menus are

\common\data\fonts.dat\common\data\fonts_j.dat\common\data\fonts_r.dat

@ mkey82: Don't you think the reason why downgrading breaks so much is not due to the new files added but rather old files changed by 1.0.0.4 that have no back-up within 1.0.3.0 (so are not reinstated by it) ? The old .exe will not call any new files. In any case, thanks for all the research you made on the new patch.

I'm not sure I actually understand what you're saying, but it seems logical to assume that some of the new files have changed something in format (like those font files) and that makes them unreadable to the old exe, so you get a broken menu.

Probably not all files will cause problems, only a few, but then again you have to hunt down the bug in an otherwise buggy game (at least for some).

@mkey: Your list is incomplete. Although I think you said that many of the shaders were changed you have not included some very important files that were also changed. I'm not sure that the shaders would break the game though.

Particularly note the two "frontend" entries, this is what may have broken the menus if two patches are mixed up by downgrading. I'm going to assume that if you tried to use just the v1.0.4.0 or v1.0.3.0 GTAIV.exe instead of the v1.0.0.4 that you might break the menus.

If you must downgrade it appears that the best method requires a complete reinstall and repatch.

My list is not incomplete, you should read more carefully.

I explicitly listed only *new* files, that is files that will remain after you "downgrade" from 5th patch to 4th. All the changed files will be downgraded as long as they are contained in the 4th update, so I wanted to reference the new files that will remain after the "downgrade" as there isn't anything in the 4th patch that could overwrite them.

Only these files can effectively break the game.

OK! Thank you for the clarification.

So, if you apply patch 5 then apply patch 4, some of the files from patch 5 will not be replaced thereby possibly causing a problem.

That wasn't quite clear to me, it is now. Thank you.

Wasn't thinking about all the possibilities when I wrote that post.

Did you actually try this? Or did you just compare the patch contents? Just curious.

Others have tried it and among other things they didn't have any text in the menus and whatnot, I assume that's because they changed the font files.

My list is a result of binary comparison of all files from the unpacked 4th and 5th patch.

This is exactly what I meant in my own post. However, ...

Only new files can effectively break the game.

Why? Will the .exe call them if they're not listed? They shouldn't do any damage. I thought only those files that were not downgraded properly (because the previous patch didn't have the back-up) would break the game. If I delete the files you suggested were new, my game won't run.

New files as in "new in the 5 patch comparing to 4th" but already present in the game, only updated. So they will be brought up to version 5 by the 5th patch, but after a downgrade, version 4 exe expects to see the files of version 1, so they might break something. You are thinking correctly, just a few terms have gone misunderstood.
