Fall of the House of Bellic

A great article. But it highlights how deflating the ending was. So deflating it barely felt like a typical GTA game.

If it was another game, a linear game in which you couldn't just go on a random killing spree, the ending would have carried more weight. But Niko's despondent reaction just feels hollow when you can then go and butcher thirty cops.

It's like he can go from killing to killing to killing to grief to killing again.

Ultimately it feels as though the very format of the game robs of the story of any ability to be poignant or meaningful. But what can you do about that?

You can choose not to kill wildly. Make a mistake, and have yourself arrested. But how is that fun? i don't think who the player kills out of story has any affect on the impact of the story itself.

edit: just read it. Great f*cking article. It's just good, no matter how you feel about GTA IV.

Going on random killing sprees isn't canon. Anything in the cutscenes is.

The reality of GTA4 hit me like a wet sock! (in the face)

Did want to just leave you laughing at that, but the article does touch on discussion of plot amidst chaos, the Free-roam, do what thou wilt, be the whole of the law aspect of GTA gaming.

Even Official Playstation Magazine touched on the moral failings of the game with touches of the human spirit and tradegy.

I think of a game like this as cathartic to the core, but the story simply takes you on a journey, and now, with GTA4, allows some diverse outcomes with choices you supply. Again, since I am raised a Christian, why do I like a game so steeped in bad deed??

I can tell you, it's only a game.

The plot handling, I applaud Mr. Houser and his co-writer. I think bringing God and the modern war aspect, dealing with revenge's cold, hard aftermath, it's still good to be rooted in human's mortal soul, feeling, good, bad, love, hate. Sure, Niko's ran over plenty of bystanders, typically if he honks, and they don't jump aside fast enough, but he typically offers up an comment about what he's feeling as he does.

He's the nicest guy you'll ever hate!
