NYC Highway Code

Recommended Posts

I found out recently that there are certain highway rules that apply in New York City that are very different from anywhere else. For example, being able to skip a red light only if you're turning left or right (I really don't know if that's true or not)! wow.gif

So could somebody please give me a link to a New York highway code please?

I've probably made some massive mistake here or done something really stupid, I don't know really that's just me. So feel free to tell me to f*ck off! tounge.gif

...As usual

and yeah, it's true, you can never make a right on red in nyc unless it's posted, which it almost never is. i wouldn't say the traffic rules are that much different, with the exception of that one rule. nyc also has a sh*t ton of red light cams, so you really want to actually stop at a yellow light or be quick. i guess the enforcement of rules is also a pain in the ass and can be different than other places. most places have rules that you have to stay in the right lane on a bike, nyc is the only place i've been ticketed for supposedly breaking this rule (i wasn't actually breaking any rules, but the nypd are real douches).

The funny thing about getting busted by the cams is that they don't stop you. You go about your normal day. But when you least expect it, you'll get a a nice piece of mail in your mailbox, containing a nice juicing ticket with a couple of photos of you commiting the act lol.gif

Well, in Texas you can turn right on red whenever you can turn right on red whenever you want to, as long as it is safe to do so.

There may be spots where it says you can't turn right on red, but otherwise you can.

I'm not sure if that is weird, because I don't know if other states allow the right turn on red.

Yeah when I was in Virginia while in the car I noticed people still turning right when the light was on red. Really confused the f*ck out of me if I'm honest all of the way's American driving/traffic and general rules on driving over there are really different to over here in the UK. I kind of got round the idea by thinking that its pretty much a T junction when turning left or right even with the red light on.

Over here [Midwest] you could also turn right on red when it's safe to do so. At night times, since there's less traffic, the lights start to blink yellow or red. If it blinks yellow, you must treat it as if it's a yield sign, if it's red, it's consider a stop sign. I noticed many people out of the state stop on yellow blinking lights thinking it's about to turn red as I just drive by like nothing. Guess there's many differences with big/small cities.

Well, obviously tounge2.gif It's a camera, what's it going to do? Jump off the top of the traffic light & turn on its sirens & pull you over?

You know what? Your comment made me laugh. So here's a cookie.giflol.gif

No they don't jump out at you that would be way to cool. Instead they bill you $50 bucks and invite you to meet a not so friendly judge at night sly.gif

Seems like quite an odd rule at first, this whole you can turn right on red thing. I can see the logic and it does actually make sense, it's just an odd thing to be able to go through red lights.

Here in merry old England if you see a red light you do as it says and stay put, even if its three in the morning and there isn't another moving vehicle for 4 miles.

What's the deal with jaywalking in New York City? Coming from a country (England) where jaywalking is not considered a crime (unless you're being really dangerous) I was worried that I might get caught out while visiting California last year so I was REALLY careful. In fact everytime I crossed over a small suburban road without stop signals I felt really guilty and was worried a policeman just happened to be nearby and saw what I did.

Then when I got to NYC I found that it was every man for himself! People were taking all these big risks, surely the traffic accident rate in NYC must be really high?

Jaywalking is business as usual, though I admit is sort of risky but people don't care.

Technically it is against the law to jaywalk. But most of the times cops will not ticket you or even confront you. I mean how would you confront so many people that jay walk during the morning or during 5 o'clock rush? Jeez, the sidewalks are so over crowded sometimes the only possible way to get to work or get through without being late is to jaywalk. biggrin.gif

I would think somewhere else where the city is not overcrowded it would be a lot easier to get busted for jaywalking. Now I know for a fact anywhere in Texas they'll ticket you in a NY minute. I think it's around $25.00 and you'll need to cough it up quick or your ass is in jail. People I know from Texas that come here say we got it made. lol.gif

I jaywalked right in-front of a cop once, I didn't make him slow down, but pretty much right in-front of him. Nothing.

So I am guessing it depends on the cop, and the city.
