Episodes from Liberty City Disc

Derelict Frog

Earlier today while playing Ballad of gay Tony on my Episodes from Liberty City disc I knocked over a stool onto the top of my Xbox 360. This caused a shock to the system and crashed the game, saying the disc was unreadable. On removing the disc, I saw a perfectly concentric circle of scratch on my disc. I understand it as the shock causing the disc-reader to momentarily hit the disc, causing the scratch.

I know this was my fault entirely, but I was wondering whether there is anything I can do to fix the disc or will I have to buy a new one?

More importantly - will there be any long lasting damage to my Xbox360 or was it only a transient effect. I just hope so. Thanks for any replies internet and GTAForums.

Unfortunately the 360 is notorious for its disc scratching. The disc will definitely have to be replaced, but it is difficult to say about the actual console. When my 360 scratched a disc the entire disc drive had to be replaced. Then again it could be a one time thing.

If you still have the warranty I would recommend sending the 360 in to Microsoft and get it replaced for free. If you don't have the warranty then I would suggest getting the console inspected at a electronics place or video game store or something.

Yeah, I scratched my San An disc literally the same day I got 100%. It was sad. cryani.gif Fortunately, I was able to buff it out using toothpaste. Here's a wikihow guide.

Basically, the main thing is to use a PASTE, not a GEL.

Also, you need a lint-free rag, like a lens-cleaning-cloth that you get/use for eyeglasses. monocle.gif

You're supposed to rub it radially, from the center out towards the edges. But when I did it, I simply buffed it in small circles directly on the scratch. It worked fine fine for me, but doing it that way SUPPOSEDLY makes it more likely to leave little tiny surface scuffs that may or may not confuse the laser.

Also, know that this will take will take a bit of time. It took me about an hour and a half to buff out two minor scratches. It may not work if the scratch is too deep. But be patient and persistent and you should be playing again soon enough!

PM me if you have any questions and I'll try my best to help. Good Luck!

If its under warrenty, and works DONT send it back. Microsoft wont repair it, as diagnostics will say nothings wrong.

My mate kicked his console over, and scratched the disk, took it into gamestation and said it was like it to begin with, the guy replaced the disk!

Console should be fine, but dont send it in unless it needs it. Microsoft's repair service aint as gd as it appears, i can not go into details, for reasons i can not say, but if it works now it should be fine.

NP. I notice ur in the UK?

Look i[ a company called TCR - Total Console Repair.

Got the E 74 in sept, but because i'd gotten insurance with Game/Zurich (insurance company not the german city:P) It was sent to them for free. smile.gif

They might do a simular thing if your interested.

Bear with it though. The toothpaste things worth a try, it can work with some scratches, though i aint got a scooby why though tounge.gif

If not take it in the shop, use the old "My birthday yesterday" tactic and it may work - it worked with me a few times. Got a CD from asda but the case was empty. Asda wouldnt do anything but for some reason i went into smiths and they did!!!!

So u never know:P

Hope u get it running again tho tounge.gif

If you can get the disc replaced for free, by all means go for it. It's worth a shot, and would probably be less effort.

But if the store doesn't buy the story, definitely try the toothpaste method before buying a new disc. I really do swear by it. If you do try it, keep in mind that progress doesn't always show at first. That is, even after buffing for a while, it's hard to tell if it's working. But then, all of a sudden (as the surface finally starts to level out) the scratch just starts to disappear. Patience is the key. Hopefully, though, you won't even have to bother. Please keep me posted on your status, if you don't mind. You've piqued my interest. biggrin.gif

@Mokrie: I think the paste works as a mild abrasive. It's like using very, very, VERY fine grit sandpaper to buff out the scratch and level the surface.

Whats so hard about bringing it to a place where they repair discs?

usually videogame stores have that machine.

Because those machines are made to repair SMALL scratches on the surfaces of a disc. Once you have a huge concentric ring on your disc, it's f*cked up beyond recognition. In other words, the data is lost. In better words, the disc is now a coaster.

Well, for me it worked like this: I went and brought my 360 and the two disk's it destroy'd (skate. and MOHA) at GameStop and they gave me new two disks and said to ask Microsoft 'bout the console. I asked and they came and took it and brought it back after two weeks and said that it had a new disk player and they also gave me a 1 month Live Gold card for free.

NOTE: You shouldn't do the following because it's not right. Well... You decide. If you break a disc of yours and REALLY cant buy a replacement, Rent a new copy of the disc at the video store. Remove the good copy and insert the broken. The store can't verify that it isn't their copy and can't find at what point it was broken by the time someone comments.

Anyway, I've had this happen before. I have broken 2 copies of GTA IV before the one I have now. The first one got a round scratch all the way around. It would get to the copyright screen and start playing the GTA IV theme, only to freeze every time. The second was scratched from having my 360 standing vertically and litterally froze every 10 minutes or so. One day I threw it on the ground and it shattered to pieces.

except some rentals have stickers on the disk themselves - getting that off and on to the other one would be a very tricky task...

Dude just take it to Hollywood video and they'll fix it for like 2 bbucks. Same thing happened to my gta IV.

Yeah, I took it to a video rental store and they fixed it for five dollars & it worked perfectly fine.. that is, until I got the Red Ring of Death sad.gif
