300GB hard drive

Average fps: 29-31

can any one help? and as for my graphics settings everything is on very high (except for shadows which is on high) and texture filer quality is on highest. and view distance and detail distance is at 30 and vehicahle density is @ 40. these settings never chnaged when i upgraded to quad core and my perfence hasnt changed one bit.yes,my computer does detect the 4 cores, and is enabeld from the BIOS.but now i dont know whats the issue

You say you have 2gbs of ram, can you tell is if that is just 1 stick of 2gb ram or 2 sticks of 1gb ram. If you only have 1 stick of 2gb ram that could be your problem. Your ram will be running in single channel mode which will drastically reduce the performance of your PC.

The ideal situation is to run the PC using 2 sticks of ram at least so you can take advantage of dual channel mode. You can check to see if your PC is running dual channel by downloading CPU-Z which you can get from here.

Simply download the 32bit or 64bit version (depending on what OS you use), run the program then click on the memory tab. On that screen there will be a section with "Channels #" next to a box which will say either "Dual" or "Single". If it is Dual then icon14.gif if it is single then icon13.gif .

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do to make your PC fun in dual channel mode except buy some more ram.

I'm not certain that GTA IV even takes advantage of quad-core CPUs.

I agree with the above poster suggesting that you try overclocking your CPU. I've run some hardware tests and have concluded that the CPU is the main bottleneck. You already have a great graphics card with the 8800GT. I upgraded from the 8800GT to the GTX 280 and I can assure you that my frame rate did not increase even in the slightest. In fact, the only performance increase I could manage was by overclocking my E3110 (e8400) up from the default 3.0ghz. Every speed increase boosted my frame rate significantly. I finally settled at an easy 3.6ghz (this CPU doesn't even break a sweat). Now I can't give you exact numbers from memory; however, I'm pretty sure I got at least an extra 10fps from this modest overclock. And, remember, this was after getting zero difference from the consierable graphics card upgrade....

Good luck.

if the user is at the top end of the gpu it wouldnt matter if he had a i7 in there it will only produce the top fps for that card on this game in his system ? it may push it a little maybe smooth it out the fps numbers prob wont change much i had the 8800gt zotac top of the line when they was out, on a c2duo then went to a quad and saw little improvement but actual stability , i know gta iv is very cpu intense but wil only go as high as the gpu will let it ?

as cc says the ram in dual mode will help alot and the more the better up to about 3 on a 32bit system

and it looks like the quad is on a lower mhz than the c2d so if gta doesnt want to use the extra cores(to best use) its not going to be any faster

Oh, it does.

Yes, but you need to have two exactly the same modules. Even slight differences between the sticks will cause instability. That's why RAM is getting sold in pairs there days.

I have two sticks of OCZ sli ready 1066mhz 2gb and when I switched to 64bit I put another gig (2x512) of 667mhz I had laying around.

All it did was slow down my other ram (which is still 4:5 ratio and so I'm still faster than the FSB). The only thing that needs to match is the 5-5-5-15 thing, and even then, it will downgrade one set to match the others.

@OP: I believe you need more ram to compliment the CPU IMO, but it's an assumption for the moment unless someone else can concur...

I advise you to overclock the Q6600 to atleast 2.8-3.0ghz if possible. I own an 650 sli myself and according to my experience and online reviews, they arent very overclocker friendly. Check out overclocking forums on how to do it. There's a small to none risk if done properly though. Get you a good PSU aswell. I highly recommend you a Corsair branded PSU.

Finally but not least, grab you a pair of good 2x2 gb ram sticks and run them on dual channel mode.

Trust me on this one, you'll see the difference.

Ps: this is my opinion only, the responsability relays on you
