CrowbarRX
GTA IV 1.0.4.0, Addon Cars, some work, some don't. I tried adjusting the centre mass etc for less leaning, does nothing, tried modified filelist.pak, game crashes, tried filecheckfix.asi, game crashes, i cannot stop certain cars from flipping on the first turn. What the hell? Any advice that i haven't seen around? this is damned annoying trying to rock around in a Chevy Tahoe, Hemi Cuda etc and having the damned car flip on the first corner with speed. Note: Yes, handling.dat, vehicles.ide etc have been modified.
Rob.Zombie
since your filelist.pak is not modified, your game doesn't even realise you modified your handling.dat or any other data files. Delete filelist.pak, then you'll see, if a handling is properly made, your can't won't flip in every corner.

CrowbarRX
I did try modifying my filelist.pak, that was another dude asking. i used aru's empty one and the game dislikes it, i tried a modified one with another mod, it accepts it but the handling is still boned, and filecheckfix just has the same problem as the empty filelist, gamecrash on load, not sure if its a 1.0.4.0 stuffup or what, but if the file is, it seems, below a certain size it just flat out crashes. Hell i even tried the files.txt trick with no luck, same crash. I'm absolutely dead out of ideas. edit: hell, i even just tried replacing the handling/vehicle info IN filelist.pak and got the same crash. goddamnit, should i just reinstall this crap? Rob.Zombie
Did you even try to simply delete it? That should do the trick. Yeah if all else fails, try reinstalling. Ps.: Sry I replied: "but I thought you tried modifying your filelist.pak ", but I've just realised I didn't reply for the same person
CrowbarRX
even tried deleting it, same crash! no idea what the hells wrong with it. I'm thinking a complete reinstall may have the desired effect, i doubt running Windows 7 would have any dramatic effect on it, would it?
CrowbarRX
aha! fixed the flipping issue! Reinstalled GTA IV, patched to 1.0.4.0 and used xliveless, seems to effectively bypass filelist.pak and none of the cars i was having issues with now flips. Success! megalomaniac
I'm having the same problem with editing the handling.dat file. I have vista with 1.0.4 patch installed and use yaasil mod loader, which works fine for the 10 or so modded cars and native trainer I have in the game. Asi loader makes the game crash for some reason, and Xliveless had a trojan virus in it!!. I have tried to edit the handling.dat file with several different handling editors, all with handling.dat unchecked for read only and running as administrator. All the handling editors(GTAiv handling editor, Xhandling editor etc,) successfully change the lines, because I've opened the file in the root directory, and my changes are in there. However, when I play the game, noting is different!! I even changed a front drive car to RWD, checked the changes in the handling.dat to make sure the changes were there, which they were, and still no change. What am I doing wrong? I even tried the 8byte filelist.pak thing, and still nothing. I don't know what else to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!!!!!!
CrowbarRX
if you grab xliveless off gta4-mods.com or credible site, it has no virus, but could show up as a false positive, theres no virus just the way the code works makes anti-viruses lose their minds. xliveless is also an asi loader, which comes in handy, the problem lies in filelist.pak itself, it contains all the stockstandard handling lines and reads out of there, i tried changing them to no success, does deleting filelist.pak as Rob.Zombie suggested work? otherwise give xliveless a go, its an asiloader/filecheckfix in one, hence the false positive (i got the same for filecheckfix.asi)
megalomaniac
I'll try that and see. I'll tell you if it works. Thanks for the reply
megalomaniac
Well I tried deleting the filelist.pak, started the game and vista informed me that it had stopped working and needed to close immediately. I then Installed the xliveless, which I told AVG to disregard as a trojan, which the game got as far as loading my game save and then the same thing happened. Am I supposed to remove all mods before I change the asi loader? i just removed the dsound.dll with the xliveless.dll. I really have no idea what to do next.I thought it would be easy to paste a handling sting in the handling.dat and that was it, but obviously not so. The stock handling sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What next?
CrowbarRX
Well, that was pretty much my issue, stopped responding must close, thats why in the end i did a fresh install and threw in xliveless straight away after updating, i never could pinpoint the cause of why it was actually doing it, there were no signs as to what the hell was causing it, i'd say try backing up your savegames (if you're not miles ahead in the storyline, i wouldn't bother), reinstalling GTA and patching to 1.0.4.0, then throwing in xliveless, you should, theoretically, encounter no dramas. thats about the only thing i can think of at this point. I do have one car that likes to flip, but i think thats just a bad handling line.
megalomaniac
Thanks for that. I had no idea that it would have been soo much trouble to start with!!!!! I may have to reinstall. Could I restore instead, or do I have to delete and start again? Something I just remembered. I recently tried a megabob and monstertruck rancher mod, which I had replaced the handling line for those. Every time I turned a corner at anymore than walking pace the freaking thing would roll over several times, like it's center of mass was 100 feet tall. The thing that really sucked though was that it was still the height of the stock car, as if some handling data was being read but some wasn't. Whats with that? I finished the game, which is partly why I'm trying to mod the crap out of it, so I definitely will backup the savegames. I am a little reluctant to delete the game and reinstall though . However as you said, it may be the only way. It is a shame Xliveless has no online support, due to the fact that I haven't received all of my GfWl achievements like that stupid five rolls one, I've been obsessed trying to get that one with no avail!! Anyway, I'll tell you your last suggestion works. Thanks
megalomaniac
Well I was able to use the xliveless without having to reinstall, and even be able to edit the handling.dat with noticeable success. The unfortunate thing though is that it doesn't recognize that there are any save games previously made, even though they supposedly are still there, as I didn't reinstall. It wants me to start a new game. Where can I find the save games in the gta folder, I cant seem to find anything that resembles anything of the sort? Is there a way I can copy the original savegames and re-paste them in as if I dowloaded and installed a save game of the net? Like you, now quite a few of the cars that I didnt edit the handling of seem to roll over all the time, maybe the handling relies on the filelist.pak for some handling sections aswell, like you said. as my previous installation problems with the suspension of the monstertruck mods could be a testament to that. CrowbarRX
If the cars you installed but didn't edit the handling of are flipping, its just bad handling line, if they're stockstandard cars, i have no idea what the issue is xliveless creates a new save game folder in /documents/rockstar games/gta iv/savegames as far as i know, but i'm not sure, i know the old saves were stored in the localapp folder in windows as far as i know. Paste them into that directory (make it if it doesn't exist) and see if that works.
megalomaniac
Unfortunately the handling modding was short lived. The Xliveless was working fine for a while, but then it stopped working again. Anyway, after trying several different Xliveless versions, I reinstalled. Now on the 3rd fresh reinstall, the Xliveless 0.99b seems to work ok for my trainer and a few mods. however, when I edit the handling, it stops working again, as if the filelist bypass tool is causing an adverse effect. I don't know what's wrong with it, as the previous handling edits caused no change to the handling, as worst case scenario. BTW, I managed to fix the savegame problem, thanks heaps for that!!! FTS
I have the same problem with my handling.. it stays the same. I had not the problem on xp, since i have win7 it just wont f*****g change! Please someone fix that i beg you..
megalomaniac
What asi loader are you using? You may need something to bypass the filelist.pak. Are you able to play the game with any xliveless versions? I found that 0.99b would work with mods, but as soon as the handling.dat was changed the game wouldn't even get to the loading screen before it stopped working! Maybe try Xliveless 0.97b, as I had a short period of time where I was able to play with edited handling. It did f#[email protected] up eventually for no apparent reason though, don't know why. If those don't work, you could try deleting the filelist.pak file in the gta iv directory, not to say that it had any success for me though. I'm still unable to play with edited handling, even after several attempts at fixing the problem. Nobody seems to have had as much trouble as I have, don't know why my case seems to be so unique! CrowbarRX
As of patch 1.0.0.4 i still have the issue resolved simply by deleting filelist.pak, xliveless SHOULD work as its a bypass all in one, also check that the handling lines are correct, that there are spaces where there should be, and whatnot, i always use filecheckfix as a precaution but since theres no filelist.pak, doesn't really matter. All i can suggest is a reinstall/1.0.0.4 update + filelist.pak deletion for yer problem FTS, though some experienced modders like schaefft (i see you viewing this topic) might be able to shed some light

megalomaniac
Well I'm too afraid to update to 1.0.0.4 patch considering how much trouble I had with everything on 1.0.4, and with Xliveless installed, what's the point when you can't play online with it anyway. I did update to 1.0.0.4 from 1.0.4.0, but I couldn't use spark iv so I didn't bother with it, and just reinstalled 1.0.4 (SOOO MANY NUMBERS TO TYPE!!!! ). Anyway I may have figured out the problems I was having editing my handling. l would usually use a handling editor to edit the handling.dat already in place in the data folder of the GTA root directory. However when I was having compatability problems with Xliveless 0.99b, I decided to check the handling.dat file to see what that could tell me to possibly diagnose the problem. When I checked the file, the editor had completely messed up the handling strings, there were no notes at the top, nor were there any spaces. So now I keep handling.dat copy in my documents folder (besides my backup) to edit manually with notepad or use the editor with, then check it, make sure everything looks normal, then copy & replace the file in the root directory. Works perfectly now, YAY!!! Also, I was having problems saving the handling.dat when opened in notepad in the GTA root directory, whenever I would try to save it, it would say it was unable to save. I don't have that problem now since I have been editing a copy in my regular documents/ pictures folder, computer just thinks I saving a notepad doc. Phew, that was tiresome!!!! Hope this helps to possibly solve some other problems some people were having as-well!

CrowbarRX
theres a tutorial on the forums here somewhere on adding cars without replacing them, maybe give that a shot instead, then it shouldn't rely on filelist.pak or whatnot at all. Not exactly the best fix, but hey, might get your cars working properly
