Not f-in' London

American cities that are perfectly viable for GTA are usually more like LC then London will be. It's a different culture!

I live in London. I FAIL to see the similarities between London and Liberty City, aside from gritty neighbourhoods and skyscrapers, which, well, SA will have and VC will have.

This.

I've never been to London (not yet atleast) but ffs, they're different countries, different cultures and have a different criminal world.

QFT. London..... just doesn't fit in the GTA world, VC and SA cities are perfect.

I think he was for London....he was arguing against the suggestion that Britain be included in a game with say Ireland or France.

Not sure, but as far my english goes I understand it as he is against London. But anyway, to clear my confusion, I'm wouldn't like London in GTA.

I was, and still am, pro London.

The culture thing was about:

Them being different.

London would be too close to home for me, and probably anyone else in Britain. The whole aspect of the GTA series (for me) is that it's set across the pond, it could be a different planet in comparison. I don't think running around and shooting police officers in hi-vis jackets would have the same feel at all.

You don't get the same complaints from New Yorkers or Californians.

The thing about London is, I'd love it because it'll FEEL close to home.

The main problem most people seem to have here is that, for them, GTA started with GTA3. Thus, all they know of the "GTA world" is III's 5 main cities. They are the same people that say IV is crap in comparison to SA, and can/will not accept anything that changes their preconceived notions of a GTA game.

Is the atmosphere in Vice not different to LC?

It's not a real reason.

I know that there are a lot of differences between london and nyc, but I still just don't think London would feel fresh after playing in NYC. You would get the same cold, grey feeling.. I think i'll pass on that.

Here's the thing. Whilst some criminals in America are seen as good guys, like protecting their community and such, what sort of criminals do we have here? In England, our underworld is filled with absolute scumbags. People who assault the elderly and the mentally impaired, people who act like they're in a movie or video game.

What kind of main character could be likeable, given the sort of criminal we've spawned? At least Mafia guys have some misguided popularity.

I agree. I didn't like the trapped in a city feeling Liberty has. Imaging London... Vice City would be more preferable, if not somewhere completely new.

I would much rather France or any other European city than London. I think france would be a great choice. You have Paris a beautiful city, you could travel to the alps, small little towns in between.

grope_4_that_date

this is what i immediately think when i think of the GTA cities

liberty city = classy, gritty, skyscrapers

vice city = beaches, pop, bathing suits, pools, glamour

san andreas = country...

- los santos = beachy, sunsets, ghetto

- las vegas = gambling, strippers,

- san fran = peaceful, harbors, classy

personally, i want beaches. i want bathing suits, i want glam, hawaiian shirts, and all that fun stuff

rockstar isnt going to do grand theft auto 3: vice city again, but they might do gta4: vice city

I'm sorry but I really don't understand what you're getting at. We have the same criminals as the American's and the rest of the world, though I don't see how it would affect a video game even if we didn't.

No, we don't have the same criminals as those in America. Because most of our criminals are unambitious, undiginified little bastards who think the height of wit is to vandalise peoples property for no reason.

What I'm saying is that with people like this it will be hard to create likeable characters. Because our criminals are just so thoroughly unpleasant and revolting.

Oh I've been there. It's pretty nice.

There are some dope dealers who try to sell you marijuana tounge.gif

Can't really make a good story of that.

Isnt that Holland? Maybe you were high and never left. biggrin.gif

But seriously if it was set in the ghettos around Brixton in South London it could be interesting. London's got the dangerous areas and the upper class areas and alot of diverse areas and history. It would make a welcome change from yet another US city.

Yes, we do. Name a type of criminal activity American's perform that we don't. I honestly can't think of any. Also, Keyword: Most.

I don't think it would be hard at all to create likeable characters for a London based GTA. Just look at the films Lock Stock and Snatch for two prime examples. There was pleanty of likeable characters in those movies, why would it be any different for a video game?

I'm not talking about kinds of criminality. I'm talking about how they act and, more importantly, how people see them.

Like, black gang members in LA. Their lifestyle has been highlighted and somewhat glamourised by film and music. Same basic principle applies for the Mafia.

But what do we have in London? Apart from old, 1960s perceptions of what an English criminal is? It's made up of scummy children on council estates who go around stabbing each other for no reason. Or occassionally hounding pensioners or anyone who isn't as brainless as them. It just seems that our modern crime is being committed mostly by kids, and they're a big no-no for a Grand Theft Auto game. And even if they weren't, they're just so petty and ridiculous that no one would want to play as one of those f*ckers.

What about those three criminals who robbed that diamond store earlier this year? And what about the guys in Green Street?

Ah, now that is interesting. I've heard that they could be part of the Serbian Mafia. But they don't seem very Serbian to me.

If we're talking about a loose connection of English robber-barons, that could perhaps work. Like those guys who stole millions in Kent.

Personally, I want to find reasons to set a GTA game in England. Because I love this country and love the idea of someone in America or Greece or wherever playing it and thinking that our country could be somewhere good to visit one day.

It's just that crime here seems so foul and base that a game set here could be horribly unpleasant.

Thats just the media's flavour of the month, the kids on the estate, there is a lot more to the criminal underworld in London, and the biggest gang in London, of course, is the police

London has organised crime. Triads, Yardies, Russian Mafia, cockney firms...street gangs and robbers have just got a bigger media focus.

He's only using it as an example of recent crime in England, you muppet.

Also, I was just about to bring up football hooligan's. They have definitely been 'glamourised' this past decade through film.

There's all types of criminals in the U.K, though I will admit, teenage crime is definitely a regular occurrence and is rarely out of the news.

You all seem to forget that GTA is a game, so basically, they can invent characters who would be british gangsters and likeable. I've had he same conversation on french forums about Paris, that it wouldn't fit because there isn't as much criminality as in the USA. But it is a game, even if as you say most british gangsters are scum, nothing prevents R* from showing the same kinf of characters and situations as in the previous games.

I probably wouldn't mind London in a future GTA game, but just not as the next game. Like I said, give The Getaway 3 a chance to shine a light. Another thing is that most of the crime in London yous mention is mostly stabbing (melee). GTA focuses around guns a lot more than melee, but I could still find London quite suitable for a Manhunt game.

London would be f*cking awesome with some R* magic. Imagine a videogame-manifestation of all the Guy Ritchie movies like Lock Stock, Snatch, RocknRolla... there is so much good material to use in Britain. You guys saying there isn't any crime in London wouldn't know anything anyways, but there are a ton of ethnic gangs and mobs like any other major city. R* doesn't need statistics and numbers about crime rates to decide where to put GTA, they pick cities with special atmospheres and vibes to fit the characters they make. Also... R* doesn't have any more interesting American cities to put the game in that they haven't used already. Liberty City has been done like 5 times now and is beat to sh*t. I'm sick of Vice City; I think most of us got our fill of it and it only works well when coupled with the 80s. Apart from the beaches and ocean, the city/urban areas of Vice City are really boring and dull. I guess I wouldn't mind another SA but it feels too early to be remaking it already. Unless they just pick one of the 3 cities in it and make it bigger/more detailed, but I doubt they will do that either
