Special Collector's Editions

I'd be surprised if this has never been discussed before, but I couldn't find a similar topic. This is inspired by a recent "Special Ed" article in the UK's XBOX World 360 magazine.

Many games today are also available as part of a Special Collector's Limited Edition. Sometimes these seem to be little more than a different box and some postcards. In many cases the games themelves are unchanged, but they give you extra "tat" to go along with it, be it artwork books, figurines or [what are claimed to be] night-vision goggles. Some games actually change the game itself in some way by adding new vehicles, characters or levels.

Personally, I haven't bought many. I got the GTAIV one with the safety deposit box, holdall, artbook, keychain, Soundtrack CD etc. I'm actually surprised that I have found regular uses for the box and bag, but have never used the keychain and only occasionally bothered with the CD & book. Before buying I thought it would be the other way around.

I'm very interested in 'behind the scenes' stuff, so books, commentaries or DVDs regarding the 'making of' are enticing to me. I regard prop statues or figurines as just tat that will eventually clutter up my home.

As an example the special edition for Assassins Creed 2 includes:

"Serialized Black Collector's box" [not interested]

"Exclusive Conspiracy Book" [could be good]

"Ezio Master Assassin Figurine" [complete turn off]

"Bonus DVD and Game Soundtrack" [Hmm, interesting]

"3 Exclusive in-game bonus quests" [Could be good or bad, but I hate missing out on in-game content]

What makes you choose to spend more on a game than you have to?

What do you really want or even expect to have in a special edition?

What do you hate to see in special editions that turn you off buying them?

I'm a sucker for special editions, I just like all the extra stuff with it. I like having a nice set of stuff all in a nice package of a game I like and it feels so complete, I just can't help but be seduced by all the goodies like with GTA IV it had a few extra things but the lockbox and duffel bag is what I really liked and I in future I will buy more SE but only for the special games.

1) Cool game box and exclusive cars and sh*te.

2) Soundtrack is a definite.

3) Nothing, so far.
