Garfield 2
Hiya! As I am getting my first car in a year (yes!) I would like to get an advice from people who DO own a car. I am going to get a part time job in June til August (around 2900 I'll make). I talked to my parents about this and there are few suggestions: - VW Golf MK4 1.4 CL 75BHP - Car - €2,350, Insurance - €3045 - Total: €5395 (1000 payed by my parents) - Seat Ibiza 1.2 (2003-2008) - Car - €2,950, Insurance - €2625 - Total: €5575 (1000 payed by my parents) - VW Polo 1.0 (2000-2001) - Car - €2,100, Insurance - €2300 - Total: €4400 (1000 payed by my parents) - VW Passat B5 1.6 CL 105BHP (1997-2000) - Car - €1400, Insurance - €3300 - Total: €4700 (1000 payed by my parents) It turns out Passat 1.6 is going to be cheaper for me than 1.4 Golf. Suggestions?

I heard a few people say that the Bora/Jetta is meant to handle better then the Golf aswell, but since i havent drove one i cant back up that claim. Are you sure that the passats BHP figure is correct? My Golf had 115bhp and im sure they use the same engine. I would say go for the Passat. That's what my parents' Golf had inside it anyway so I just guess it's the same. It could be 115 though.
Garfield 2
I am thinking about Golf, as I would love to drive a nice one like this one: Passat's ain't the best cars ever but they are tunable PLEASE NO HATE - I like little tuning to the cars. oh sh*t! sorry for double post. stretch.
and my family has had 9 years worth of focus' without a single breakdown, doesn't mean that someone else won't have one that breaks down every single day. VAG's do have their problems nowadays though. So do beware.
Garfield 2
I think I'll go with the Passat unless I find a cheaper VW Golf. Hurray, Found 10 VW Golfs - 1998, 1.4-1.6 1400 to 1800 euro. Edited November 2, 2009 by Garfield

Lurch
100 hp doesn't seem like near enough hp to adequately move a Passat. I don't see what the Euro obsession is with big, underpowered midsize cars is with tiny engines. Why not get a smaller car (lupo, golf, etc.) with the same small engine so it doesn't move like a turd?

Save it for the racing games mate, thanks to my impatient offensive style of driving i now drive a sh*thead Ford Escort rather then my golf and i have 3 points on my licence for doing 56 in a 30. dog_day_sunrise
That "nice" Mk4 Golf is foul. Fake R32's are just stupid and those wheels (and that colour scheme) would be far more at home on a Corsa driven by some grunting oaf. 105bhp in a Passat is going to be completely gutless you know? Throwing 800 Euros at a Golf is going to get you literally nowhere if your intent is modding it. A half-decent set of wheels that aren't made from aluminium foil will be at least £400, and then you've got to fit springs and shocks (or if your sensible, coilovers) so it doesn't look like a truck. Then all your money is gone and you have nothing to spend on a stupid body kit- good in my oppinion. Save modding cars until you've owned one for at least a year. If you still feel the desire to devalue it with stupid glue-on tat then go ahead, but otherwise you'll just end up regretting it.

AZAZEL
I drive a Golf MKIV myself, the 1.8 20V, which is my first and only car so far, and it's incredibly slow. I can't imagine how misserable I'd feel if I was stuck with a 1.4. Go for the Polo.

This 1.8 is just pure bullsh*t, lol. I think that my first car will be a Passat and then a Golf R32. Don't get me wrong. It's faster but instead of 1.6 it's 1.8 with a turbo. For god's sake, I would expect it to run at least 240KM/h Edited November 3, 2009 by Garfield
stretch.
I'm not all too certain a 1.6 golf will do 130mph. Apparently the passat B5 1.6 is 100hp, top speed is 112mph/190kph The 1.6 105bhp engine was only available in the Golf Match,S and SE models and has a top speed of 119mph/191kph The 1.8 20v Golf has a top speed of 125mph/210kph if it's in the 125bhp variant, a fair bit more if it's the Anniversary GTI model. And Az's isn't the 1.8T, his is the non turbo. So oh dear, looks like not all your facts and figures were quite right You are correct sir, the 1.8t comes with 150bhp stock, with a stage one remap you get around 200-210 and i think the stage 3 remap can get around 300bhp on the stock internals with a few bolt ons. Not bad really.

Not bad really. iirc, they were underrated at 150hp to make the more expensive Audi TT (which was rated at 180) look more special. Once it came to light that they were all actually making 180 hp, VW started listing them as such and Audi introduced the 225 hp version to set itself apart. Not bad really. Stage 3 remap can't be done on stock engine. Needs K04 turbo, inlet manifold, exhaust mani, injectors, intercooler ect. Personally I don't really call a turbo kit "a few bolt-ons", if you look at it that way then the APR twin-scroll kit (good for 425bhp) counts as a simple bolt on- especially not at the price of one! The 1.8 20v is a non-turbo motor, with 125bhp. The 1.8T/GTi motor is a turbo, with 150bhp standard/180 anni edition/225 in TT/S3/LCR guise Garfield2- By 3.2 4-motion swap, I assume you mean engine AND drivetrain. God, what a waste of money. Why not buy an actual R32 and save yourself a fortune?

That makes 6300 euro without bodywork, clutch, ancilleries, brakes, suspension et cetera. You can pick out a proper R32 for under £9k- building one would cost much more. My bet is either he's lying, or he's done it so he can keep it logged as a 1.4 and not get nasty insurance/tax. I'm thinking he's lying, because he lists a dump valve as an engine mod. A dump valve on a non turbo car? Hmm. Also, downpipe? Again, that's for turbocharged cars.
Garfield 2
Believe me, in Poland it's really hard to get an R32. There is only 13 for sale in whole Poland. http://moto.allegro.pl/item799196657_golf_r32.html I know it's all in Polish. Divide the price by 4.26 - you'll get it in Euro or 4.70 and you'll get it in Pounds.
dog_day_sunrise
Still make it cheaper than the ~£12k it will have cost to build an R32, especially if he didn't do all the work himself. The other one on their is 42k, which makes £8900. Edited November 3, 2009 by dog_day_sunrise
