“They don’t look as frightening now do they?”

I finally saw what he was, an old senile fool. A coward, a user and a waste of life. His withered old hands were shaking and his eyes had finally lost sanity’s glimmer. He stroked the dying beast, it breathed heavily and let out deep, painful moans. The blood and the sand had mixed together and painted a ghastly image. The enormous elephant would spend its last few minutes of suffering having to squint to block out the relentless desert sun.

 

The hill didn’t seem as big any more. The last few daunting moments had caused it to significantly shrink as the enemy marched slowly towards us. My few remaining men tended to the wounded, trying to make their last moments as comfortable and painless as possible. Our hour was up, we were now friends standing together, brothers - not soldiers. Friends who were about to die, swallowed up by a merciless army of countless enemies.

 

I turned to the fool.

“Primus Pilus, I was. Why did I ever become a General? How could I ever look up and not notice people like you? Fools who stand on a hill and send good men to their needless deaths!” I wasn’t even sure he could hear me, he’d become delirious and confused.

“What’s the matter? Has the sun gone to your f*cking head?!” I withdraw my sword, he seemed to snap out of his delusion as the sharp shriek shivered down his senseless spine.

 

“I am a man of honour, I spent my life down in the ditches fighting side by side with my countrymen! My soldiers, my friends! They’d take an arrow for me just as soon as I would for them!” My fury made him shudder, he was all alone.

 

“Give these fine warriors your horse.” He shook and backed away from his famous stallion.

“Gentleman, it’s been an honour serving with you. I’ve never seen such bravery in my life. We gave everything we had today, what more is there? End the suffering of the wounded, gather rations, then take off on whatever remaining horses there are. You are to travel until nightfall, then make camp in the mountains. When the time is safe, you return home and retire with your wives and children. That is an order, are we clear?” The men let out a simultaneous animal-like call of agreement.

 

I nodded to Luscious, without hesitation he took his sword and plunged it in to the chest of the old fool.

“Sir, it’s been an honour serving with you. You truly are the finest warrior the world has ever seen. I hope your superhuman skills go with you to the next life, I will see you on the other side.” He gave me a final, teary-eyed salute, climbed on my horse and rode off towards the mountains.

The enemy were only feet away now. I loosened the strap on my helmet and then threw it to the ground. One by one I sliced off every piece of armour I had, they clunked to the sand with a dull thud. The legions got closer, hundreds and hundreds of men were only seconds away. In one fluid movement I picked up a spear and violently lunged it in to the commander of the first legion I saw. With a spray of blood he fell to the sand.

 

The men were scared, they were within striking distance of me, almost face to face. I could see the fear in their eyes, they knew me, they’d heard the stories and the tales of The God of War. The best swordsmen on Earth, hand picked by the Gods to lead armies to conquer the world.

I would happily lead armies, as long as I was the first man in to battle and the last one out.

 

“Men, I stand before you as a soldier, not a God or an extraordinary being. I ask that you grant me a true death and show me no mercy, because you won’t receive any from me!” With those words I took up a fighting stance. After a few tense seconds, they reluctantly moved forward.

When I seen the picture, I was knewing already, that your story was not today. What I mean not in the weapons age. Primus Pilus. Is that the name of the principal character? If so it makes me think your character is Roman.

 

 

The tales of The God of War. Did you inspired you of the game God of War one and two?
