agincourtsalute
I'd like to suggest banning video avatars and sigs. Because sometimes when I'm scrolling down pages in topics my laptop freezes for a few seconds to a minute which happened to me not long ago. I think its worse when a page has quite a few video avatars and sigs on it and the more people create them the worse it will become. Surely I'm not the only one who has problems with video avatars and sigs making their computer or laptop run slowly? P.S. I know that other things make computers run slowly like specs, software ect. and I haven't got 20% of my hard drive free.
drakic
Indeed, there are many video avatars here, but I doubt it can be banned, since so many members use them.
Raindancer
Goto your CONTROL PANEL >>> Board settings http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?act=UserCP&CODE=04 and you can switch them off
agincourtsalute
But thats to switch off all avatars and sigs, perhaps there should be a option to just switch off the video ones.
ScratchCard
But thats to switch off all avatars and sigs, perhaps there should be a option to just switch off the video ones. That is impossible, a forum software cannot detect whether a GIF image is taken from a video or not (unless every avatar that is +1 mb would be disabled, that would include a lot of video avatars). Anyway, I like my avatar. PCs these days are supposed to be able to handle these.

Tobias Fünke
Why should everyone have to suffer just because your computer sucks? Get a better computer. And I find it hilarious that you want sigs and avatars banned when you are using both. Hypocrite much?

Its about VIDEO avatars and sigs I clearly stated that in my original post and the word VIDEO is the topic title, if you actually bothered to read it properly (if you can) then you would know that. As far as I'm aware GTAF is for a broad range of users and not just for those with the latest desktop PCs.
Tobias Fünke
You don't need a good computer to view video avatars. My Computer was made in 2006 and I can view them fine. As I said before, get a better computer.

As far as I'm aware GTAF is for a broad range of users and not just for those with the latest desktop PCs. And yet you're the only one complaining. I have a NETBOOK and I never have any problems. Unless your laptop was somehow made by the Flintstones and is powered by some sort of chatty wisecracking animal then I have no idea how you ended up with such a terrible computer. I bolded the part of your quote that stuck with me: We DO provide TWO lightweight skins for users with computers purchased on food stamps. We offer the option to disable avatars and sigs. We're not going to re-code anything, or ban animated avatars because they don't slow down page loading*. "NO, IT'S NOT COOL THAT I ONLY GET TO VIEW ALL OR NONE. I WANT TO SELECT WHICH AVATARS I SEE BASED ON A PREDETERMINED KILOBYTE RESTRICTION!" Jesus. *if you want to argue this, PM illspirit because he was the one who told me that avatar size doesn't affect page loading, but sig size does. Does that mean you guys have stepped away from that 20 KB maximum avatar size you were going to introduce?
Punk-in-Drublic
Simple solution, turn off avatars in your user CP or get a PC that was built in the last decade. I doubt you and your argument to have them banned will be enough, hundreds of users have these avatars and nobody has ever complained.

agincourtsalute
For the record I'm using a iBookG4 laptop, yes its sh*t I know its sh*t I'm the c*nt who has to put up with it. I need a new computer I know I do but I already sent my list off to santa so I won't be able to get one this year. I can watch videos the problem is that when I'm scrolling down the page as I pass a video avatar my laptop can freeze for like 5-10 seconds while that video slowly goes through the frames then the video avatar plays normally. @Anuj I'm not going to bother Admins with PMs about this I had a suggestion so I posted it in the suggestions section and there is also a compromise suggestion I'm sure a Admin will see it sooner or later and let me know what they think just like you did. See? The problem is on your side. Why should the whole community suffer (by banning video avatars) because you have a crappy PC? There are some skins which go easy on your PC, might want to check it out. And if these things are really such a problem then just disable all avatars. I also made a compromise suggestion of introducing a feature to switch off just the video avatars then nobody would suffer as you put it although how you can compare been forced to have a still image avatar with war, famine, and drought is beyond me. Exkabewbikadid
Like others are saying, your best option is to disable avatars in your control panel. I doubt the admins would bother with implementing an option to disable .gif images in the cp because it's a bit excessive seeing how you're the only one to complain about them out of thousands and thousands of users. At best, a file size limit might be reinstated on avatars so that ridiculous file sizes aren't being used, but I make no guarantees that the admins will do that. drakic
If you don't want to disable all the avatars, and you're using Internet Explorer, just click on Tools/Internet Options/Advanced and then disable ''videos on web pages''. That should deactivate all the videos you see. You can re-enable it again later, if you want. This is a better solution, rather than banning the video avatars, and making the whole GTANet suffer. You could be right mate, the cable I've got connecting my modem to the phone line is pretty old. I'll replace that and see if that helps. Thanks @drakic thanks for the advice but I don't use explorer. Wait, are you saying you are still on dial-up internet? If so, then that part of the problem. I have Cable internet and even on my old laptop(a cheap IC Power brand with a AMD Sempron 798MHZ processor, 256MB RAM-until I upgraded to 1GB, and a VIA/SIS video card w/32MB VRAM, never had a problem handling the forum load. So, it might just be that you need to upgrade to either Cable or DSL internet(they are both fairly cheap now a days). You can get the cheapest package from Cox Communications for less than $17 a month. Just a heads up.
Rhoda
If it is the case he does have dial-up, that is definitely an issue. This is why you'll see on many topics (not so much anymore) sub-titles stating a "56k warning", meaning there's an abundance of photos and videos which may bring your browsing speed to a halt. If you're not in a position to upgrade, financially or otherwise, there's not a lot else you can do unfortunately.

VideoPoker
At best, a file size limit might be reinstated on avatars so that ridiculous file sizes aren't being used, but I make no guarantees that the admins will do that. Yeah, it's kind of silly that signature file size is limited to 80kb, but a user can have an avatar as big as they want. I've seen members with avatars of 1000+kb which is definitely a little excessive.
