Shadows

TBOGT improved the graphics by removing the blur which made the game look cleaner. Now the only thing they need to improve on is basically shadows they look like donkey sh*t.

I'm not a graphics whore far from one, the next GTA game coulld have the same graphics as TBOGT has and I wouldn't mind, but I doubt it'll happen since Rockstar does improve on things.

But the shadows is really the only really ugly thing about GTA now, they look horrible..

Do the shadows bother you? They don't bother me since I don't look at them, but sometimes when you see them or look at them it really does look just horrible.

Also another thing I hope the next GTA game doesn't use character shadowing, I don't know if IV did but I doubt it because I haven't noticed any ugly shadows on the face.. I mean take Uncharted 2, a great looking game it has character shadows like shadows from Drake's hair on his face which looks HORRIBLE I really do not know why games attempt to do this if it ends up looking sh*t. If they can't do it, then DONT.

Shadows seems to be a pretty big issue this generation I don't know why but it seems that way.

Laufas, without getting into technical details, shadowing is an extremely complex and expensive task. Considering the sheer size and complexity of environment, what they managed to do with shadows in GTA IV is already a great achievement. I doubt it can be much improved on next GTA, since it will run on the same engine.

I can see you never played old GTA's

if you ever played any game from III era, you would think TBOGT's shadows are the most beautiful things in the world

I started playing GTA back when GTA2 was released.

So.... FALSE. Lol

Don't get me wrong the way the shadows work is incredibly impressive, it's not that. But they look so...... patchy and fugly.. I hope they manage to improve them atleast a little bit

Side effect of projective shadow mapping. There are only two cures. Either increase resolution of memory map, which would rape your graphics memory, or to switch to shadow volumes, which would rape your CPU. So you are basically stuck with what you have now.

Meh if you've played back then and every GTA in between you wouldn't even mind if shadows were GTA III'ish

I very much look forward to playing a GTA with shadows like this:

However I can't help but feel like this will only happen in my next life.

It does look like that.

On highest settings, if you dont go to a massive resolution (stay at 1650 or below), and it does look crisp and clean. But far away looks bad as it mips down.

It doesn't technically mip, because that would require high rez shadow texture to be generated first, and then scaled down. But yes, map resolution drops.

definitely not. ive played all GTA's. 1-IV.

The old shadows were not fuzzy and shaky and poorly shaded. they were stable and static. These shadows do suck dick. but the game still has great graphics just not shadows.

Speaking of shadows, I don't understand why Grand Theft Auto IV and San Andreas have such dark shadows. If they're going for realism, it's not realistic. Your eyes adjust to darker lighting. Grand Theft Auto IV runs itself into the ground by having such dark shadows. You can't see anything half the time you play in IV. And if you turn up the brightness or contrast it messes with everything else not in the shadows. Not to mention turning up the contrast acts as turning up the brightness for some reason, and the same with turning up the brightness turns up the contrast in reality. They're backwards. If there's one thing I want in the next GTA, it's the ability to be able to see everything clearly in the game and not feel like I'm driving a car in space. Why should we have to adjust the brightness, why can't the default brightness just work on multiple TVs. Grand Theft Auto Vice City and III did it fine, what's the problem with IV and SA.

That's a nice picture. What part of New York was that taken at?

I think that might be Chicago, actually. At least, they have a rail system very similar to this.

I recently bought a new HD tv from Samsung 40`inch. The game itself looks great but the shadow edges looks really bad. Theres allot of flickering which is really anoying. Been trying to run the game in both 720p and 1080p but it still looks the same.

Anybody know how to resolve this issue?

Thanks.

Flickering of shadows depends on some graphical settings. Go to video options, and see if your graphics card can handle it if you push the shadows options up a few notches.
