BenMal
Hi all, Ik play GTA4 for a while now, but it doesn't work properply anymore after I installed patches, so I uninstalled the game and installed it again. But this didn't help. So I figured out there maybe was some component of GTA still left on my computer. Then I found this Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable software installed 3 times on my computer. Does anybody know what this is? Is this software that comes along with GTA4? Notice that there are also two versions of Games for Windows live on my system, one of them is 'redistributable'? Somebody please help me... Thanks
JeddyH
It shouldn't be a problem, GTA IV will pick the install of GFWL or C++ it needs and run with it. The problem lies elsewhere.
mkey82
What does "doesn't work properly" actually mean?
BenMal
But is the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable software a component/part of GTA4? And why is there 3 versions of this software installed, and 2 versions of Games for Windows live? Here's and image of the installed software: doesn't work properly means the following: I play GTA4 for a while now, but when I decided to play online, Games for Windows Live made me install the latest patch. After this patch, everything went wrong. I lost all my save games and the cars now float in the screen. When I look far away, they float, and when they come closer, they actually 'fall' back on to the street. I uninstalled the game and then re-installed it, but it doesn't help. Even with every graphic option on maximum, the cars still seems to float. I could not play the game on high with an Intel Core i7, 1.8GB GTX 260 and 8 GB RAM, so I thought a patch would help, but it only made things worse. JeddyH
That pic look like a folder of EXE files, are they actually installed?

mkey82
OK, uninstall all GFWL crap you have there. Now download the updates manually (links in my sig) and install them.
BenMal
Thanks for your answer I uninstalled GFWL, and updated with the 1.0.4.0 Do I have to use the Xliveless, the GFWL, the SGSC updates too? Your signature also says use the LaunchGTAIV.exe to start the game, but that shortcuts doesn't work anymore since I updated.
mkey82
No xliveless, it will disable MP. What do you mean, the shortcut doesn't work anymore?
BenMal
When I use the shortcut, windows immediately says: GTA4 doesn't work anymore... closing down... Its something similar to that, because the message is in Dutch. I'm going to try to install it again. I removed every folder of GTA4 and GFWL and RGSC. But is this Microsoft visual C++ also something I have to remove? Edited November 4, 2009 by BenMal
mkey82
Look, let's forget about MP for the moment, drop xliveless in the install dir and run the game with LaunchGTAIV.exe.
BenMal
I'm sorry for the late reaction. I did what you said and dropped Xliveless in the install dir, and ran the game with launchGTA, but there's no difference at all, except for losing my same games again.... mkey82
except for losing my same games again.... What do you mean? The game doesn't run at all? What error does it give you?
BenMal
that's a little mistake the word 'same' has to be 'save'.... so I lost my save games
mkey82
Taht's now what I meant. In what state is GTAIV now? How did you lose your savegames?
BenMal
First I decided not to pay attention to this floating cars, and did a couple of missions. Then the floating cars (and the actual total draw distance) of the game started to really annoy me. I decided to do what you said and tried Xliveless and then launch the game with LaunchGTAIV.exe. result: The state of the game is still the same (this really bad draw distance, floating cars) and I had to start all over again, somehow my save games 'vanished' after dropping xliveless into the install dir. Somebody told me to adjust (edit) the file visualsettings.dat So I edited the 20.00 into 40.00 in the following setting. # Lod distances for vehicles car.lod.distance.high 20.00 car.lod.distance.low 80.00 No result accept for more fps, but noting visual. (nothing I can see/notice) Is there any other way to restore the game? Maybe a mod ( like this one ) Edited November 18, 2009 by BenMal
mkey82
Your savegames haven't vanished, read the included readme file (the on in xliveless archive), xlivless uses a "my documents" folder to store savegames. Have you tried some older patch? Have you tried the latest (fifth patch)? Considering the possibly random modifications you made, you should uninstall the game, delete the install directory manually and then install the game version you used when everything was working fine. BenMal
I'm really grateful for your answer! ''Your savegames haven't vanished, read the included readme file (the on in xliveless archive), xlivless uses a "my documents" folder to store savegames.'' According to the readme savefiles are now located in the folder: (for Windows Vista) %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Rockstar Games\GTA IV\savegames\ This folders doesn't exist on my system and it never did. ''Have you tried some older patch? Have you tried the latest (fifth patch)? Considering the possibly random modifications you made, you should uninstall the game, delete the install directory manually and then install the game version you used when everything was working fine. '' I uninstalled the game and GFWL and RGSC and its install directories. And then re installed the game, but somehow the effect that patch 4 causes is still working. Even after re-installing. I tried installing patch 1, 2, or 3 on a 'clean' install, but no improvement. So there must be some changes made by patch 4 elsewhere in my system. mkey82
The savegames you should place *manually* in that folder. But you obviously don't need xliveless, so you can remove the xlive.dll from the game dir. About your issues, I really don't know what to tell you. I just don't understand what's going on. Have you thought about reinstalling the OS? Or at least install a new OS on the secondary partition/HDD?
BenMal
I have partition C, and a second partition that Dell created for me. It's called 'Recovery'. I am considering system recovery, which brings back the 'factory condition' off the system... The bad thing is, I will lose all my windows and McAffee updates and also my driver updates en all windows settings... I also have to re-install every piece of software. And only because of this stupid patch that's been made to improve the game... Do you think this is something I should do?
mkey82
I believe it will fix your problem, yes, but if you're no comfortable doing so, I wouldn't recommend it.
BenMal
Thanks a lot for your help! I'm going to do the 'system recovery'
