No firearm is inherently silent

By that do you mean, no firearm has a built-in supressor ... ?

no, what he means that any weapon cannot be completely silenced.

even if it does have a silencer, you can usually hear the hammer or bolt in action

Hm, I always figured the Ruger MK 1 was pretty silent.. although TS isn't so perfect about every detail..

.22's aren't the loudest weapon to start with. Use CCI cbs, and the report is barely louder than an airgun. Of course they muck up barrels and have an effective range of about 15 yards, but they're quiet.

I figure I'm going to pick up two pistols when I turn 21. The first one is definitely going to be a Ruger MK III .22LR to develop some good shooting habits. Second will either be a Beretta 92FS 9mm (I know they aren't the most reliable, but I've always wanted one) or a Springfield XD in .45ACP. 14 rounds of .45 sounds almost too good to pass up. Everyone I talk to who has shot an XD raves about it aswell.

In what regards? In my experience, that is ONE QUALITY GUN. With no reliability holes that I've been able to see.

I turn 21 in two months from today, and plan on getting a handgun. I don't know much anything really about guns, so I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. I know I don't want a revolver, so scratch that. I'm thinking maybe a Beretta 9 or something, but that may just be because it's common and I've heard of it. tounge.gif

I've shot plenty of airsoft, paintball, and BB guns, and I'm not retarded, so I think I could handle whatever...

quasi-edit: I noticed just now in the reply window that both anuj and Dem have said positive things about the Berettas, so that seems good, no?

Some people have trouble with factory mags, and others say that unless kept spotless it has feeding issues.

Personally, I think they're full of sh*t.

They'd have to be. The factory mags aren't the easiest things to load by hand when brand new. So you leave them laying around fully loaded for a week (good idea anyways). I can hand load my buddy's 92FS to 15 by hand, and I'm not the beefiest fellow. He's never had a single FTF. And while he keeps it clean now, he didn't at first. From what I've seen in ammo alone, I would find it hard to believe that the 9mm Luger platform is prone to FTF's in any firearm. Certainly not one of Beretta's level of excellence.

@TheRoper: That depends on what you want the gun for. Handguns are no joke in terms of recoil. A full sized service model will take the kick out of even a 45. But then you lose concealability. Is conceal carry on your menu? Also, what previous experience do you have?

I had some FTF problems with the Berreta 92 in a military capacity and if I had been an officer and offered one as issue, I would have refused it at that point. I adopted a sig as my personal sidearm during the service, and am loyal to them to this day. Having fired a 92fs few times since outing, I think it is fair to say it was an environmental issue, not the weapon itself. Sandstorms and mud are not good for any firearm.

Small frame .40s? Tough tough, especially avoiding a 1911 style or a baby glock. Have you looked into the Kahr K40 or MK40?

PS - Get that airsoft bullsh*t out my thread!

That's what I mean though. In my book, a K40 is very Glock-ish, all boxy and hammerless. Also not happy with the lack of disassembly lever, but that's not as big a deal. What can I say? My guns have spoiled me blush.gif

I thought this topic/Demarest in particular would enjoy this:

http://anti-dentite.org/crap/Shooting3.wmv

An Ohio CCW-er triple-taps a would-be robber. I lost the link to the full news story, but the video itself is crazy. I really hope that it was just the camera angle, and he wasn't shooting that close to the kid.

But a great example of how CCW can help prevent jackasses from taking honest people's money.

I'd want to know more of the details. The way the CHL'er ducks makes me think maybe he was shot at first. If not, then he was actually against the law in Ohio. We have silly stipulations meant to protect the criminals.

I'm not judging him at all. I was in a situation once where I would've been fully in the rules to pull and I didn't. I was in another situation where I DID pull but did not shoot. I didn't exactly play that one by the rules, but it did what it was supposed to (scare them off). You'd be surprised how much it shakes you up even thinking about pulling a gun on somebody, even when they bring it on themselves. First one I mentioned above took me 3 days to feel normal again and even then, it was only because I was spending lots of time with my family (Christmas).

But yeah, it looks as if he was dangerously close to the child, though his efforts to clear the child were equally obvious. Which is also why I'm inclined to believe that the BG opened fire first. This video is a good example of why states with CCW laws experience a drop in crime rate. Also a good example of why no guns signs broadcast to BG's that that is a soft location, ripe for the plucking. I urge those of you that even have no interests in guns to avoid such places for that reason alone. Because as the female customer in this clip shows, you NEVER know who's plotting what or when.

Downloading the video now, I'll edit this posts with my thoughts in a second, I suppose.

@Dem - It's the closest I could even find, so I'm getting an idea of your trouble now. .380 is a fine round, I comes to that, but I'm genuinely surprised that there isn't anything out there (that I can tell) with that style, in a .40.

I was in Ohio (Mason and Cincinnatticiedfhaslk... however you spell that place) a while ago, and I noticed that they had little stickers all over the place that had a revolver in red with a (/) sign, and some legal code underneath that stated 'No guns allowed on this location unless otherwise specified by blablabla. Are those pretty common over there? I've never seen anything like that on the west coast, not even when I was living in LA.

Edit - Although he is too shy to admit it, that is demarest in the video. He didn't shoot because of the robbery in progress, but because the robber was distracting his web browsing during work sigh.gif

I'm pretty sure the robber fired first, because of the reactions of the clerk; and though the officer and soldier in me says 'he shouldn't have been so close to the woman and child when firing' or 'he should have backed them up first', the black man in me says 'Damn! I've never seen such big women move so fast!'

No, there's not that many here. The problem is that current Ohio law backs them up. So any building can post it and if it's conspicuous, a violator is committing an M4. Of course an M4 is probably worth defending yourself, the only time it would become evident you were carrying there. And even then, the place has to press charges. I read of a posted 7-11 that was being robbed when a CHL'er gave him a pair of 357 to the back of the head. Not only did they not press charges, but the signs came down that day smile.gif Or how about in Utah where the law doesn't honor such signage unless you're first made, then asked to leave, then refuse to. If only.

I've heard in Columbus though, they've grown legion. When I went down there last, there was even a parking garage that was posted. How you post when there's no indoors is beyond me. Not to mention that when a CHL'er must enter a CPZ (criminal protection zone), their car is supopsed to be their refuge for locking them up. Sheesh. I've spoken to carriers in Sincinasty and I'm told that there's plenty of bad areas that would make you want to carry. The problem with Ohio is that we have quite a few "big" cities. So they pass a bunch of silly laws to boast to the sheep how "safe" their city is for having such bolstered gun control. Never mind the fact that only the law abiding will comply, so you're essentially disarming the good guys. Ohio law currently provides for all that too, though the HB I spoke on will impliment state pre-emption, rescinding a localities ability to supercede state concealment laws. I can't wait.

Provided for amusement:

tounge.gif It's ridiculous.

I haven't had to respond to any calls related to a 'righteous' shooting by a CCW handler yet, (which is one of the 12 remaining calls in my FTEP before I can shake the yoke of a bitchy training officer and make the rest of my probationary period alot easier on the ears) but I guarantee I will shake that mans hand when my FTO isn't looking.

Doesn't matter. If you have a gun, you need to shoot it. If nothing else, to continue to ensure that it is operational. If somebody busts in your house, you go click but don't go boom, guess who owns you now? It also keeps YOU operational with it. Replay same above scenario...

So sell it. You'll get decent cash and a perfectly good firearm won't have to go to waste.

Now if you're ready for the truth, there's no such thing as a safe neighborhood. Most would be thieves and what not don't accost military bases. Know why? Because they'll get their asses stomped before even getting inside. No, instead the prey on what they believe to be a soft target. If you live in "the safest neighborhood", you live in a soft spot. You read about that on the news all the time. "It's such a shock; this is such a quiet community." In fact, you might even notice that gun control really only takes place in larger cities. Because in the country, guns rule as no law enforcement could make it in time to make a difference anyways.

Come to think of it, I live in a city of driving impotents. Perhaps I should cancel my insurance since everybody would rather stay at a stop sign and hold traffice up than actually go when it's their turn because they're too retarded to understand or pussy to take a stand. Which reminds me, the roads are pretty clean too. Guess I can go ahead and take out that pesky spare tire...

Point being that you don't know what's going to happen. But if somebody were to break into your house, they're PROBABLY going to be armed in one way or another. Should that happen, you're a sitting duck if you're not superiorly armed. Not to mention that in the darkness, while commiting a crime, nerves are going to be high. To even just hear a shotty being pumped would send most death fearing creatures running.

yeh but the UK isnt/cant be gun-ho like the yanks.

this situation you described at the bottom of yer post actually did happen over here.

Two teenagers broke into a farm house and the owner who was carrying a shotgun shot at the light source one of them was carrying and killed on of the lads.

There was a big protest and the guy got sent to jailfor protecting himself and his possesions

i think hes out now, but theres nothing we cant do over here without getting nailed for it or having reprocussions.

Put it to the test then, and get some use out of it at the same time - go blast a couple of chavs. It's not like they're human or anything. You may need a proper hunting permit, though.

(The above was a joke and should not be construed as actual advice from a law enforcement official)

Can you tell us what kind of shotgun it is? It should be clearly marked. I'd be interested in knowing what kind of bird gun you are putting to waste. colgate.gif

Does anyone here know what the proper procedure for getting a FFL is? When I turn 21, I plan on getting 2-3 handguns. Being the type of person who just loves to accessorize, I'd like to purchase one or two suppressors aswell. Nothing for any big-boy guns, pretty much just for a Ruger MK III and 10-22.

Suppressors, under that NFA dealy, can't be owned by Missouri residents except dealerships. I figure having an FFL would both save me money and qualify me as a dealer.

Other than that, I'm completely lost. I tried going to the ATF site and looking for a Form 7, but it confused the ever-living hell out of me.

Anyone have any experience/friends who have FFLs?

I would tell you if the bran mark wasn't worn away. This gun is around 20 years old, my brother said. It looks like there's a bird on it, though.

@anuj: I do NOT have direct experience. My memory serves as follows: It costs $200 for three years. With proper advertising, you could recoup that in a few months if you allowed yourself to be the conduit for firearm shipments and such. It should be noted that holding an FFL puts you under intense scrutiny. This is often amplified if you're within city limits of any major city. Supressors require a class III license to even buy. Not sure what it takes to attain one, but I know that if you hold one, you forfeit the right to resist ANY ATF inspection at ANY time for ANY reason. I think for principle alone, it's not worth it.

Again, the above is from memory and subject to the inaccuracies thereof.
