TLAD.

 

Looking back through this thread I only seemed to have voted TBOGT when I was still high on new game hype. Since the dust settled a long time ago and looking back in retrospect I have no idea why I did. Apart from some gameplay elements it doesn't gel with the GTA IV lore anywhere near as good as TLAD did/does.

 

TLAD has a better story, characters, more engaging side missions and Johnny sh*ts on Luis for character and personality.

And ironically, many people claim that TLaD got nearly nothing to do besides the storyline. (uhm.... Gang Wars, Bike Races, Angus' Bike Thefts, Stubbs' Dirty Laundry, Backup system...)

I enjoyed TLAD the most.

 

Better story, better characters, better jokes, better missions (I can't stand the way over-the-top missions of TBoGT), better activities.

 

I don't think TBoGT fits well with the mood of Liberty City, to be honest. This game also wasted Ray Bulgarin's character.

I like them both, almost equally, but I pick TLAD, has a better story and  more likable/relatable characters, IMO. The fact the I like the "biker theme" helps a little too.

I'd say that neither of IV and The Lost and Damned is better than the other, because both have very entertaining gameplay, solid story and great character development, it's just about taste in my opinion.

 

Personally, I prefer The Lost and Damned by a little hair, and I'd like to explain why;

 

     While The Lost and Damned, as an expansion pack (it does feel like its own game, at least for me, and so does TBOGT, except for the story's lengths), contains only 22 storyline missions, I was really attached to its whole theme; from the story, to the cast along with the gangs, to the missions themselves, to the side-missions, the bikes, the weapons, and the soundtrack.

  1. Theme: I have always been fond of biker gangs in GTA, since I played GTA Vice City and Vice City Stories, and have always been looking forward to get a title that's based on the biker life.
  2. Story: Both IV and TLAD have greatly written stories with extremely developed and likable characters, but personally, I'm more into a gang setting with a leadership position, especially biker based, than a hitman setting, even though I consider standard IV my favorite GTA title, along with TLAD, and Niko comes very close to Johnny and Tommy as my favorite protagonists. As for the antagonists, Dimitri is surely one of the best written and most developed antagonists ever made in gaming history, and he's one of my favorite antagonists in the franchise, but I prefer the badass traitor of childhood friend, like Billy, as an antagonist, to a recently introduced snitch of a Russian mobster.
  3. Missions: Yeah, I know, it contains only 22 missions, but when you come to think about it, they achieved so much, for an expansion pack, and I like the fact that most of them are squad-based. Those 22 missions I expect to be the best selection of a full GTA title's mission list. Interesting, fairly action-packed and straight to the point.
  4. Entertainments: Vigilante in IV was very entertaining, but I prefer TLAD's Gang Warfare to it. Same with Brucie's Car Thefts and Jacob's Drug Runs compared to Angus' Bike Thefts and Stubbs' Dirty Laundry. Not to mention the addition of some activities like the Arm Wrestling and Air Hockey. I also favor The Lost MC's clubhouse over any other safehouse among the GTA titles. Lastly, following TLAD's theme, in behalf of Roman's cab service, TLAD replaces that with Clay's bike deliveries, which is dope. Not to mention Jim's weapon deliveries, and the fact that Terry is capable to bring rocket launchers and grenade launchers.

 

Wait... why did I post this specifically in this thread? My mistake.

 

But by now, I can say it's a tie between IV and TLAD anyway.

For me it'd be TLaD by a long shot. Not saying IV is a bad game what-so-ever, quite the opposite, it's a very entertaining and immersive game. Here are my reasons:

 

  1. Story: The story was great. A setting as dark and gritty as Liberty City was just begging for a deeper dive into the underground world of biker MCs & their crimes. The story was told perfectly, short and to the point. No filler, no bogus dating side missions. From the beginning we jump right into the conflict of an MC with a dysfunctional leader and a second in command that puts his club over everything else. Brilliant. 
  2. Characters: By far one of the best aspects of TLaD, and one of the main reasons why I prefer it to IV, is the characters. Compared to other GTA games, IV is definitely much more serious. However, somehow TLaD managed to be even more grounded in terms of it's characters. There aren't any goofy steroid junkies. No annoying sleazy cousins. Just fully developed characters with clear motivations and flaws.
  3. Theme: TLaD has a clear theme and it sticks with it all throughout the expansion. From the film grain, to the pause menu screen, to the soundtrack and weapons. Everything is as hardcore and gritty as can be expected from a game centered around bikers.
  4. Atmosphere: The main thing I look for in a videogame is atmosphere. For me, the atmosphere can either make or break a game, and for TLaD it makes it. I can still remember how much of a badass I felt during the first follow mission where you're riding to the destination with your entire MC around you. This was the first time I didn't mind not getting to my destination as quick as possible.

Overall, I feel TLaD had much more focus than IV. While IV tried to be everything at the same time, TLaD just wanted to tell a great story and make you feel like a badass while doing so.

Love TLAD but since it being a short DLC limits it (I wish that instead of the crappy TBOGT they just made a longer TLAD). The story starts out good but really rushed and contrived later on. The fall of the gang doesn't feel natural and there aren't enough characters to care for.


GTA IV has an overall stronger more fleshed out story,a more compelling protagonist, really explores LC's criminal underworld more etc.

It can be tricky contrasting main GTA games with the expansion packs. Given the option, expansion packs would be preferable in some cases.

 

TLAD was fun, very short though because of the fun too, and reminiscent with the biker gangs and wars they had. I love the ''teamwork'' that goes into missions with additional characters in general, the convenience of car and weapon deliveries.

 

It really is all about preference. I would prefer to play TLAD over IV of course, but I'd also play IV after it. Just like I prefer to play IV over V. 🙃

I'd like to add something I preferred in TLAD as well: humor. While TBOGT is always pretended to be the humorous side of the saga, it in reality just reuses the same cheap jokes that I find too dull and annoying. I'd pick the comical moments of each of Johnny, Billy, Boccino, Stubbs and Malc over TBOGT's so-called humor any day.

I haven't played either in a very long time but if memory serves I preferred TBOGT over TLAD because I liked the more action packed missions and the kind of weapons you received such as the Auto Shotgun (AA-12) and the Assault SMG (P90)

I also liked the nightclubs a lot and felt they added a much needed nightlife element to the city.

 

TLAD was also alright and had some good new weapons but to be honest I was never really interested in the whole biker subculture so I did not like it as much.

 

Needless to say in GTA Online I spend a lot more time in my night club than in my Biker clubhouse :D

My main reason for TLAD being my least favourite of the series was the unrealistic nature of mostly white biker gangs running amok in LC, because it is not a real life reflection of the NYC criminal underworld.  I'd have very much preferred a Mafia or Irish Mob DLC in place of it, I just felt that Lost MC stuff was terribly misplaced, despite the fact I still enjoyed it though.

TBOGT

 

I found the story much more entertaining, the nightclub scene was immersive and real interesting to experience, and I loved the Drug Wars feature. I could play Drug Wars for hours on end and not get bored, it's crazy fun - there is so many different ways to approach the situation. And the ND3 make an appearance only in TBOGT, I love seeing them in action.

It would have been more fitting for GTA V I suppose but I didn't mind it since GTA IV already explored the Irish gangster angle and mob a lot & it was good to get something new. And the biker gangs fitted Liberty City's criminal underworld well..even if they aren't a big part of it IRL. If anything I thought TBOGT seemed completely off compared to how GTA IV and TLAD established things, made a complete joke of the likes of Ray Bulgarin for "humor". Even Yusuf Amir is completely different to how GTA IV hinted at him

Not at all. Dominican and Dominican-American gangs right now are at the very forefront on NYC's drug trade, and have been for the last decade too. TBOGT very much reflected that with Luis's friends ambitions to move up in the drug trade and Drug Wars. 

 

I get what you're saying about Bulgarin, but I was fine with that, as it was all part of the more humorous nature of TOGBT after two episodes of mostly seriousness with IV and TLAD.

I'm talking more about the tone. It handled Dominican American gangs like jokes (Luis dumb friends) and even the Russian Mob suddenly was quirky. It's easier for me to get over biker gangs not fitting real life NY than the established tone getting sh*t on and suddenly everything being funny. It's weird to play it after GTA IV and TLAD.

 

I wish they waited until V before going over the top and goofy again.

In my opinion TBOGT is better because adds more things that IV dosen't has like parachute,Buzzard,Golden Uzi,a lot of new guns and cars and nightclubs.I just wanted the characters to be more developed,Armando,Henrique and the Dominican gang to be more present in the story and also to buy new nightclubs,develop them,open and invest to them(and do activities).

TLAD is not a bad game,the story and characters are far better than TBOGT(even if TLAD has less missions) has also great guns,bikes,gang wars but for me it's not better than TBOGT beacause after Get Lost you lose the Lost Clubhouse,you can't watch TV and make activities.I understand it's for the ending but a special part of the game it's gone.After Get Lost should be available a Clubhouse/Empire Building system similar to Vice City Stories when you attack other gangs clubhouses,you invest in them,make them biker houses and with VCS mission mechanics.GTA IV and EFCL should had houses for sale.

Thought that, too. I believe they should've kept it open, because it was so atmospheric and iconic, including its available activities along with the Lost bikers hanging out. Since the story already went to an end, it could've been fine had they kept it for some more gameplay value.

I'd also like to add: while a lot of people preferred The Ballad of Gay Tony for "bringing back the fun from the 3D era", I personally think that R* went way too far with that in TBOGT. Sure, GTA IV is generally less action-packed than its predecessors (not that it's a bad thing though; the new mechanics along with the physics and Euphoria still make it more fun than the predecessors for me, even though it still got it's moments either way), which is understandable due to Niko's perspective of being a hired gun. The game was also somewhat less rewarding in certain spots. However, that was already justified in The Lost and Damned; complete Angus' Bike Thefts, you'll have different types of bikes parked outside your safehouse(s), complete the Bike Races, you'll have the sport bike Hakuchou parked outside your safehouse(s), and for each 10 Gang War missions you complete, you'll have a weapon delivered into your safehouse(s). Not to mention the sense of progression of your biker buddies, allowing them to carry better and better weapons as they get more hardened during battles, which adds for some more noticeable pacing, better than the player RPG elements of GTA San Andreas and V if you ask me. When it comes to the storyline missions, most of them now involve bigger numbers of enemies, with heavier weapons and somewhat more aggressively, in addition to some more explosives as well. Not to mention the return of the missions where the protagonist shoots as a passenger with an ally driving. The Ballad of Gay Tony made it too action-packed and went too over the top, with military-grade weapons that contain C4 and shotgun with explosive shells, along with the APC tank and Buzzard, not to mention the overuse of flying and parachuting, which leads me to ask: why fix something that's not broken here?

 

Now I'm not saying that TBOGT is a bad expansion (or shall I say game), because even with its flaws, it's still very enjoyable, and remains a part of the GTA IV saga nonetheless.

Something I thought was disappointing in TBOGT and I feel like it was a missed opportunity was to make money more useful since that's one of GTA IV's glaring flaws, but in TBOGT it's even more useless really. Don't even have clothes to buy anymore. 

 

I really thought given the glitzy theme it would've allowed us to buy some "toys" so to speak like special vehicles to indulge in or something.

I forgot to mention the other classic mission types that made a return in The Lost and Damned:

  • Retrieving a bike from enemies.
  • Chasing rival gangsters to take them down through a drive-by.
  • Retrieving provoked industrial territories from rival gangsters.
  • Breaking the hideout of a rival gang in order to take its members down.
  • Stealing bikes and packing them onto a truck.
  • Shooting your way out of an ambush.
  • Blowing vans up with bombs.
  • Taking gangsters down to steal a van.

 

In addition to the new ones:

  • Provoking FIB agents in order to lure them into an ambush.
  • Liberating prisoners by jacking the packed prison bus from the LCPD.
  • Kidnapping. (already present in standard IV, though)
  • Breaking the prison.

 

And people say that TLAD's missions are repetitive!

I like that TLAD's missions stay consistent with its theme like GTA IV. Nothing ever really feels over the top for the sake of being over the top.

Ha, know what you mean :turn: But it has always been a hard choice choosing between Tlad or tbogt. The main reason cause both games offered a fun never ending gang and drug wars that helped with them not getting boring. The probelm with SA's gang wars is that after taking all territories, CJ can't do anything much else after it's all taken over regarding gang wars.  It may seem repetitive to others but for me it was what kept the fun going after the story events. Something I really wish vanilla IV had in a simialr way but at least vigilante was there. Really suits Niko in a way. But with choice i go with TLAD only because I perfer gang wars over drug wars and TLAD's story was a lot more grownded up well like vanllia IV imho. Both games had tragic endings while LuLu over there rises and shines and saves LC in that plain explosion then probably just gets back to the clubs, lol.

Filter might be the only thing I prefer in TBOGT than in TLAD. It's cleaner.

 

TLAD's filter is kinda atmospheric, and fits well with the story's mood (sort of), but it slowly starts to feel dull, even though I can overlook it and adapt. At least the pink skies of TBOGT weren't always forced.

Can we move over the repetitive saying that TBoGT is PINK, that it was a pink filter and that is full of PINK colours?!  The pink is present in sunny weather only during sunrises and sunsets ( that's all the PINK you get, if ignoring the blue-red tint special coloured vehicles, hud, menu and loading screens ).  TBogt has no colour filter influence, actualy doesn't even have bloom, so that's why objects, trees, buildings,
etc. look so edgy and jaggies everywhere especially if defition is on. From this point i preffer the visual from TLaD or IV, even with the problematic colour filters.

These 2 things from TBoGT that for many players aren't really interesting and I want to remind:  Parachute and the Golf activity.

 

I always missed the lack of parachutes in IV, if character did a fail helicopter landing on a top of high building, he will remain stuck there, game over, really frustating. Yes, indeed, is not San Andreas or GTAV doing extreme top action movie sky divings and stuff, but for me, bringing back the parachute was a positive aspect.

 

People seem to forget to mention the existence of golf new activity. Maybe isn't that challenging like the V golf one, and many may compare it with the lame yoga, but for sure was a relaxing new thing to try and do in the free time in game. Even the dialogue between random opponents and Luis is fun to listen.


For me, in terms of prefference, between TBoGT and TLaD was always a close-balanced-tie, they perfectly complete the IV story and both dlc s have positive and negative aspects (already 10 pages of points of view, don't need to repeat the arguments).

BUT, because of better multiplayer and more serious feeling you get from story and gameplay,   The Lost and Damned  WINS for me.

 

 

p.s. : not really on topic, but soon, on the 17 February is the 10 years anniversary of TLaD. Even if Rockstar don't care anymore about EFLC or GTAIV, it will be nice to organize some anniversary online event. Already EFLC is empty online, GTAIV almost there, so I guess is not a bad idea to gather and play online. Personally,I prefer playing GTAIV or TLaD online rather than write here poems about good old times and how great the IV trilogy is ( said with a positive-constructive tone).    Salutations

TLAD's filter is kinda atmospheric, and fits well with the story's mood (sort of), but it slowly starts to feel dull, even though I can overlook it and adapt. At least the pink skies of TBOGT weren't always forced.

I don't mind the filter. It's supposed to look dull, muted etc.

 

Atleast it feels like it still takes place at the same time as GTA IV. TBOGT feels like it takes place at a different time of the year.
