next GTA protagonist? *TBOGT end credits spoilers*

I know this has been mentioned before but now that I have seen it for myself there's no way around it: Packie Mcreary is the next protagonist. Why would they show him out of nowhere getting on a plane and flying away (the plane taking off the runway is the very last thing we see when the credits say "the end")? The very last thing we saw in TBOGT was Luis on the roof of the Libertarian...

I think it's obvious, and I think it's a great decision to pick Packie as the next Protagonist.

To start with he will have depth: Anyone who has completed 4's main story and took the time to do activities with Packie will already know him well. He will start with a storied past in the next game, but one which Rockstar wouldn't have to unravel like Nko's in 4 because we already know it. They can throw Packie right into the action. And as he learns new things about himself, we will.

He's still young: In 4, set in 2007, he's in his mid 20's, by the release of the next game he will be roughly in his late 20's, the perfect age for a protagonist. Old enough to not be some idiot kid in over his head, yet still young enough to be energetic and get through those crazy gta situations.

He's well liked by the fans: If you were to look through every thread on this entire forum you'd likely find hundreds if not thousands of posts by people wanting Packie to be in the next DLC/or Game.

He has reason to start a new life away from Liberty City : One of his brothers is dead, another in Prison, and, depending on which ending you pick in 4, Packie's sister is dead. His family has pretty much fallen apart. The crime family has very little power left, also.

Packie is also a good pick if Rockstar do chose a European setting. Say if the next game was set in Paris? Wouldn't it be easier to bridge the gap between the cultures, and to keep us from not getting too lost in translation, by using an English speaking character? Someone who would have to cope with the language difficulties the same as us?

This would bring a new dynamic to the game. Think of how Niko's English got better as his story went along. Then imagine Packie's French getting better every mission, as he picks up slang, listens to phases on the radio, people talking on the street, ect. As he learns the language, in a way, so would we. Emerging us even more into the world, which IMO, has been Rockstar's main priority in the GTA 4 Era.

I'd have thought the DLCs would've tied any loose ends and we'd have an entirely new character set for the next proper GTA installment, but it seems there are still a lot of questions. Should be interesting to see what happens.

^ I disagree, I think Packie was just as memorable a character as Roman.

Funny thing is, I never really cared for Roman either lol. Maybe its just Packie's accent.. I dont know, I'm probably in the minority on this

Tbh, I am not a fan of non-American accents when speaking English and Packie's one of the few I actually enjoyed listening to while speaking with an accent. Now say, if the accent was like Kent Paul or Barry (from Vice City Stories), full stop, just a simple 'no' would be enough for me to express myself. But Packie was a likable character and I wouldn't mind having him as main character, specially in a setting described by rimbaud.

if they gonna base the next gta in modern day vice city then i dont think they would use him

Which means nothing, because we don't know if it'll be set in VC.

I'd like Packie as a protagonist, seeing him after IV's ending, starting a new life. There's still a lot to be told about him and his family (from when they were on top).

And Packie would fit in great in Paris, indeed.

I definitely think he'll show up in the next installment, but I don't think he'll be the main character....I can't ever remember a time when Rockstar has used a main character that had showed up in previous games.....could happen though I guess, after all, it is a new era for GTA.

You want it to be set in Paris?

I would either think he would suit, a Big city, and Crime city in Ireland? Dunblin mabey...I'm not sure

Or mabey Chicago, Aparently theres alot of Irish hoodlums there these days. lol.gif

I think Rockstar will do a swerve and have you kill Mr. McReary.

I think Packie's always been a guy with a self-destructive streak. And without his family around or Niko to calm him down I think he'll make too many enemies in his new home.

I mean, the guy's loyal enough but he's an addict. Not the kind of guy you should be playing as.

I just don't understand, why everyone keeps it under spoiler? It's nothing exciting, just you know who will be next.

I feel start someone damn spoiled big secret, like when i heard from 2 doctors from area69 the all alien thing is fake.

I think it will be as loosely tied to the IV stories as the III games were tied to eachother. The IV trilogy has several intertwining characters and they had something that really tied everything together: the diamonds. Every story involved the diamonds to some degree. This wasn't the same in the III games. There was nothing that held the games together other than being set in the same universe and involving some of the same characters. This is how I think Packie's story will be. He may only come across one other person from the whole IV saga. There won't be any diamonds to closely tie his story to the other IV stories. His story is after the other three games. The three IV games occurred at roughly the same time. And, lastly and most obviously Packie's story will take place in a new location, completely alien to the now familiar Liberty City. This makes Packie's game very different from a mere expansion.

So now you're back to having Packie leave Liberty City. You were all the people that told me that "Packie said he never left Liberty City" back in my GTA Ireland idea. So I guess no, I don't want him since the majority of the people here said they didn't.

Wow, just because it's shown in the final cutscne might mean he be in the NeXt GTA, but not as the protag, i mean he might be, but it doesn't mean crap.

You're right. Packie definitely has some role in GTA's future but not necessarily the protagonist. But, like I said before, at the end of TLAD they showed Luis. This might be something Rockstar does from now on, tease us with the next one at the end of the credits. I hope so! GTA III had a very obvious clue as well "see you in miami". One of the latter missions has you escort Ray Machowski to the airport so that he can go to Miami. No other city is mentioned like that. In recent GTA's they mention so many places that it's kind of ridiculous to try to figure out where the next one will be just by what's mentioned in the game. Having Packie move to an unfamiliar place is exactly what has happened to every other protagonist when the game is in a new location. With the episodes we (the player) are already familiar with Liberty City by playing Niko's story. I think it would seem awkward to play as a character that's starting anew in Liberty City when we've been experiencing the city for several months already.

You don't change my mind though. I think it makes more sense that Packie will be the next protagonist. He's a fan favorite and maybe Rockstar was paying attention to the fans. I personally am not much of a fan of Packie. He's one of my favorite characters in IV but IV overall has very lousy characters so that's not saying much. I wouldn't mind at all playing as him though.

In the bank heist it seemed like they talked about going to Ireland afterward...

given his Irish mob ties it could easily be UK/Ireland.

I remember how R* talked about picking NYC for GTA IV because the R* NYC guys knew the city well and for R&D purposes it was easy for them to develop. So UK/Ireland is a good choice because most R* North guys are from around there, so they know it pretty well in comparison to say Miami.

I started getting a hunch a month ago that the next location is UK, now I believe it even more!

Oh and someone mentioned the plane took off east direction...

I hope to see Packie in the next gta but not as the main character.

I think we should always have a brand new character, and also Packie is a dull and boring character for me and if we have a protaganist from GTA IV then it could get old.

What did they say? I just replayed the mission and didn't hear anything like that.

Derrick says "This reminds me of the Troubles"

Troubles occurred in Northern Ireland in the 70's.

I see no reason why Packie might not be in the next GTA. Other characters from one version turned up in other versions, such as Catalina and Kent Paul. Maybe Packie will play a role in the next but not be the main protagonist, acting as a bridge from one series to the next, especially if the next one is set in London/Europe.

Which means.. what? If Niko says 'While I was in the war', does that mean he plans to go back to Eastern Europe with his money?

Packie as a main character I can definitely see.

Paris though, no... My prediction is that it's gonna be a HUGE map consisting of three islands meant to represent Britian, Scotland, and Ireland. Packie had family in the IRA, maybe he goes to see what's available in Ireland and he gets involved in conflict over the three countries.

I don't see why they would do Vice City or San Andreas again either... Seems old to me.
