So, i recon, MS would pay for a few months of exlusivity, i say Late January and early Feburary, Since that gives the 360 owners, at least 4-5 months. Mainland Marauder Posted October 30, 2009 Share Posted October 30, 2009 IMO Microsoft found it worth $50M to at least get exclusivity for a limited time in the battle against Sony, valuable especially now that the PS3 has a new model with a much more competitive price point. This has plenty of precedents in gaming history. GTA3, as has been mentioned, was exclusive for some time to PS2 and helped that console take off. The game had been released with minimal hype like the top-down GTAs before (one might recall that Metal Gear Solid 2 was to be the blockbuster game of Fall '01) but it became a surprise hit and a "killer app" as it were at a time when Microsoft was first coming on the console scene. By the time GTA came to XBox, Vice City had been out on PS2 for a year and GTA3 had been for two years. You might also go back to the 16-bit era when, back in 1992, Street Fighter II was playable at home only for Super NES owners. Eventually Sega Genesis/Mega Drive owners got SFII but only well after the SNES release which gave Nintendo's relatively new console the edge it needed after the "Genesis Does, Nintendon't" "Blast Processing" ad blitz on the part of Sega. If anything that was the turning point in that console war. It may seem illogical to think a company would pay that much money for an exclusive title even if the other guys get it eventually, after it's yesterday's news. What Microsoft is banking on is people undecided as to what current-gen console to buy will decide on the 360 for the exclusive (if for now) content, or getting PS3 owners to take the plunge and pick up a 360 as well. Yesterday I nearlyhad took my money and bought a Xbox 360, it was so close, but then I thougt "No, it WILL come to PC and PS3, stay patient, I know you can" But normally I'm a impatient person, I can't wait longer than 1-2 months. This is a topic about the very possible possibilities of it coming to ps3 and pc. They are just trying to convince themselves about how they did a good deal with buying an Xbox360 just because GTA IV has two "exclusive" dlcs for it. Seriously, that's just common sense mate And even tho' I had an Xbox and really bought it only to play GTA IV, I still think that it is an advantage to get these kind of stuff on PC too. We have a really huge fan base with proper computers to play this game and the best thing is that mainly these PC user made modifications are the most inspiring things for Rock*. Just take a look at one of the new bikes in TBoGT... there's a mini NRG and I'm pretty sure that's implemented because there were many mods about re-doing cars or bikes with a miniaturized style. Microsoft approached Rockstar and said "Hey, can you make us some exclusive DLC? We'll pay 50 mil" so Rockstar then told Sony about it, sony said nope we won't pay anything. Rockstar WENT TO SONY to give them a CHANCE to get the DLC, because Microsoft wants it. RockStar was loyal to sony, gave them a chance. Sony turned it down. So Rockstar took the money from Microsoft and continued to work on GTA IV, all the while knowing they are going to release 2 special exclusive DLC for the xbox. In fact R* offered Sony the exclusivity first, then MS stepped in. See, the problem here is that too many people are assuming that MS paying R* was an "exclusivity deal," when the truth is we don't know if it was or not. We don't know if there is a contract, so it is so beyond pointless to go around saying it is set in stone. In fact I would like to see any proof that supposedly says R* cannot break a "contract" between themselves and MS. Seriously, back then LCS and VCS were PSP exclusives. Did you know that? Secondly: As far as I know, even TakeTwo's financial report made it clear that Microsoft's 50 million was just a loan. And as far as I know, DLC sales will simply get that money back to them because it's currently exclusive... and can be downloaded from Live. Then again, why do you think that Microsoft only paid for Xbox exclusivity? It could have a Windows release too, because as far as I know, there's Live for PC too. BTW - Rockstar have already stated that PS3 and PC users will get some downloadable content too for GTA IV. It was never a deal to have BioShock be a 360 only game. Do you even know how much that would cost? Full game permanent exclusives are really expensive. Rockstar has consistently followed a trend of declaring games as exclusive and then expanding it to other consoles, therefore there is a possibility EFLC will come to PS3. What I was asking for is this "contract" you are talking about. You talk about this like R* signed some paper using their blood as ink. Console exclusivity is a different boat because those kinds of games are very often expanded to other consoles when they do well. We all know the DLCs will do well because they are GTA cash cows. Yes sources have said that the DLC's will be for 360 only, but usually that is concerning the release date, and they don't talk about future. They never say, "oh by the way its never coming to PS3." No one from Rockstar has said that its definitely not coming to PS3. If someone said that then I will apologize, but please show me where it is stated. Am I saying that it will come to PS3? No, I am simply making a logical prediction and explaining that there is a possibility. You on the other hand, are twisting evidence and using it as your support. I can understand that your opinion is that it won't come to PS3, but it seems like you're even disregarding the possibility of it being released, which is actually quite stubborn. Now, I'm not trying to offend you or say that you are a stubborn person, but this idea of yours definitely is stubborn. The bottom line is that neither of us are going on proof. In fact I am supporting my argument with a lack of proof (proof of PS3 exclusion). I work with publication rights in my business, and there's a huge difference between First ( or second, third, fourth etc...) Publishing Rights, and a "Full Buy Out"... A "Full Buy Out" would release ALL Rights of Ownership, Licencing, merchandicing, advertising, sales, profits, and complete control of the game over to MS... and although $50 million is no joke, even for huge corporations like MS, that amount doesn't seem nearly close enough to cover a Full Buy-Out. So you're right, this looks more like an exlcusive first publishing rights contract. That still leaves the 2nd Rights up for sale. Does it really make a difference if PS3 players eventually play the game or not? Really? I've got a 360 and still haven't purchased this game yet for the main reason that I'd rather wait and see what all the glitches and problems are with this game before I spend my money... and the fact that it's already been hacked and modded in online play is a good example of a game rushed to market.
