EFLC for the PS3

You PC/PS3 fanboys all refer to previous exclusivity cases. But in this case, Rockstar has said in public that 50 million bucks was paid to let the episodes go exclusive to Microsoft's console.

And that is different from all other exclusive deals in the history of GTA. monocle.gif

Besides, 50 million bucks for only timed exclusivity? Then Microsoft has to be real dumb... lol.gif

50 millions is nothing for R*, considering they'll get the double or triple by releasing it to PS3 and PC. It's a timed exclusivity for sure. Get in R* position, and choose one:

- Get 50 mil (1 year exclusive) + the rest of the money from PS3/PC

- Get only money from selling it on all platforms.

Of course you'll get the 50 mil and then sell it to other platforms, its a win-win situation.

Plus, if it was exclusive forever, R* would have clearly answered "Yes, exclusive forever" and not just say "no comment", its obvious they're hiding it. The guy on IGN's video slipped something about it coming to PS3 too.

Yeah thats just it, R* will not have made as much by just selling it on the 360. Think about it, is it a guarantee that every 360 owner out there will buy both DLC? Widen the market.

Plus back to my point about MS building PC's, why would they only release it on one platform, when they own both and could double the money? It just doesn't make sense if it ain't timed.. lol

Well I can see MS holding it back on PC... seriously all MS wants is that every gamer on earth into Xbox 360 gamers (preferably all of them owning Live accounts and buying into all the 'DLC' BS and the other useless marketplace bullfeces).

Anyways, I can't believe how people are still holding their breath for this being 'exclusive to Xbox360' and/or bashing everyone else who thinks different. Do you guys get a hardon for this being 'exclusive'? Don't you want everyone to be able to enjoy this on the platform of their choice?

Isn't gaming all about being able to chose on which platform you play on and what games you play on said platform? Damnit, I keep on saying this but it's true: mainstream raped gaming... just as it raped many other things (music and film).

Everyone here knows and everyone here knows that the word "Exclusive" has a different meaning when we are talking about videogames.

Take that, smart-ass. monocle.gif

@Dvt-MedShot: Say what you want, but I'm going to create some signatures for you to use if it's only a timed exclusive... and one for myself if I'm wrong.

I remember someone made this when GTA IV was an Xbox 360 and PS3 exclusive though dozingoff.gif

"you pc and ps3 fanboys always bring up prior deals"

first of all, how do you know the other games weren't more money since they were more than just downloads and we're entire games and were still only timed exclusive in the end?

Secondly, didn't someone from rockstar say officially that "nothing is truly exclusive" in so few words, in regard to these episodes? someone else will need to source, thanks in advance.

And from ADAMCS's brilliant ass in case you missed it:

Rockstar has been bombared with questions about the DLC coming to PC/PS3, and will continue to be bombarded until the situation with the Microsoft deal is made clear. If there was *no* realistic possibility of it happening, Rockstar would make this fact clear and declining to comment would benefit nobody: 1) Rockstar would continue to be bombarded with questions; 2) PC/PS3 fans would continue to remain uncertain; 3) It doesn't benefit Microsoft either (if they made it crystal clear right now that there is no chance of this content coming to other platforms, some PC/PS3 fans would cave and go out and buy an Xbox).

It's common sense if you ask me. They wouldn't have said "no comment" if there wasn't a realistic chance of it happening. It benefits absolutely nobody.

Point three is the most powerful one of all - if it was "definitely, no way in hell this will ever be on steam or blu ray", they would stand to sell more copies of this off of the sheer number of people who would go out and buy a 360 just because now they know. It was said to be exclusive from day one, but it was never really said how long and it was never exclusive as a stand alone game, only as DLC, and EFLC, as we all know, including with how it won't include the music from IV because it is a separate product, and is not DLC as a disc.

So it really is a fun debate, but none of us can be certain, however realistically, there is a high probability given all of the discoveries.

The Rockstar fanbase is known for "calling it", why would now be different, right? I guess because it's probably about a 50/50 split give or take this time lol. But everyone who screamed console exclusivity and no PC version while Rockstar was even saying no PC version and no comment, it still came. So maybe Xbox exclusivity is another case of this occurring, just like PS2 exclusivity was long ago.

The thing i don't get is why the Xbox 360 owners come to topics like these and get upset and defensive over the issue that it may well come to PC and PS3. I don't understand why any real Gta fan wouldn't want everyone to experience this. You get it first good for you, but whats the big deal about everyone getting this eventually. Some people need to grow a bit.

Bad luck I guess. Maybe now, the EFLC will come to PS3 & PC

Yea, I agree. I think its because some people bought an Xbox just for these DLCs, which is a stupid move to me. Now if it comes to the PS3 their begging for mommy's money would be all for nuthin.

I purchased a 360 exactly 2 weeks prior to the release of GTA IV. Mission accomplished on as far as the deal goes, But i do feel bad that ps3 and pc guys are getting left out of a great experience. I, for one, hope the deal is timed and that every fan of GTA will get to enjoy it without having to shell out $200 for an xbox.

Well, do these emulators work good? Most of them are rather buggy (low FPS and overall bad preformance, visual glitches and errors of compass not showing up properly).

If it they do work good... I might consider doing the same thing to enjoy both games. :]

Well, can I pm you (or if you can will you PM me) about this matter? I was thinking about these emulators for a long time but the fact that there were some issues (=> low FPS and and huge graphical glitches) kept me from doing so.

If you can assure me that it's stable enough and so I might just buy LCS and VCS and play 'em on PC :].

Sorry for the offtopicness.

They said they were GIVEN 50 million. No one, hear me? No one outside of R* and M$ know what the extent of the deal was. The most obvious answer is it was a loan to help GTA IV, cause that 50 million didn't go towards the DLC cause if it did M$ got ripped off so f*cking greatly it's not even funny. The money went towards the funding of GTA IV(paying the actors and people who made the game, over 1000 people. That's a lot of money to pay)

And some people fail to realize 2 things. First off R* hate doing exclusives. I'm serious here. Agent is a PS3 exclusive sure, but there is nothing stating it will stay an exclusive. Look at any GTA game, or Bully. Bully was a PS2 exclusive but what happened? Wii and 360 port. All GTA games were PS2 exclusives until, guess what? 6 months later PC and xbox port. And Sony made it clear that they were exclusive by paying R*(The info is very sketchy but it's out there) for the series exclusivity.

And second. M$ were rich on the success of Windows XP(Many people forget this) and had no idea vista would be a big, big flop so they were handing out money like crack. If M$ knew how bad vista was then they would of never payed R* anything.

Secondly, didn't someone from rockstar say officially that "nothing is truly exclusive" in so few words, in regard to these episodes? someone else will need to source, thanks in advance.

Your not alone. I heard that to. I also heard that at TGS a Sony rep may have let slip that R* will be bringing something to the PS3 along with Agent in 2010. The guy who was talking to the Sony rep asked if it was Agent. His answer was no. So then the guy asked about the GTA IV DLC and how the 50 million played into it. Know what the Sony rep said? He said this, and I quote. "Money isn't everything."

Yes, But we are also talking about a TEMPORARY exlusivity, Meaning it's Exlusive for an amount of time, which is more Likely considering how many people from pc/ps3 will buy...Rockstar arn't stupid, so most people would say eventuall it will come tounge.gif

Sure it would be stupid not port the DLCs to PC and PS3 because of all the money. but if the contract with M$ truely said exclutivity forever there is no way R* can find a loophole.

It IS temporary exlusivity.

well err.. hopefully...

Think about it, R* could of made alot more if in the first place it stuck with PS3/PC and 360 together than Microsft offered. So why would R* deal for a forwever exlusivity? Bassicly i think it's temporary, because R* could of made way more in the first place without Microsofts offer, so bassicly all R* IMO or a i THINK are doing is racking in the money, and the exlusivity is only for a matter of time.

I Don't know though, just a guess.

This is from another guy (MrBeatdown) from the IGN forums. Thought you guys might like to see it as well

I'm 99% certain the $50 million was a advance payment from MS. Rockstar isn't raking in the normal profits on these games on top of a "bonus" $50 million. They won't see a dime from the episodes until MS recoups the $50 million. If you look closely at transcripts of Take 2 investor conference calls it pretty much confirms it. Considering that, it seems that in the long run keeping it 360 exclusive would no longer be benefial to Rockstar. In fact they would be losing money assuming porting the episodes to PS3 and PC would be profitable.

As for the Stories games, the first one wasn't out until Oct 05. MS ditched the Xbox in Nov 05 so even if Rockstar wanted to port them to Xbox, they couldn't.

So why exactly are the GTA episodes exclusive to the 360? It seems like the popular belief is that it's because Microsoft paid Rockstar $50 million dollars, or $25 million per episode. With the (awesome) Gay Tony trailer out, I've seen a few threads about it possibly coming to PS3 pop up. Someone always seems to come up with something along the lines of "It isn't coming to PS3. Microsoft paid $50 million to keep them exclusive."

That's what I thought too. Well, I've always thought it would come to PS3 at some point, but I still thought the deal between MS and Rockstar was basically a payment in exchange for exclusivity, whether it be timed or permanent. After all, that's what all the stories made it sound like when the news broke a few years ago.

Recently, I've seen a few people claim it was just a loan. With the $50 million supposedly being a payment for exclusivity, it is by far the biggest reason to think they would remain exclusive. But if it's a loan, it's a whole different story.

So I looked around. A few business sites referred to the deal as an "advance against royalties." What that would mean is that Microsoft essentially gave Rockstar their profits from the sale of Lost and Damned and Gay Tony in advance.

To back up the advance against royalties theory, I found a few statements from Take Two where they address "deferred revenue" related to the episodes. Deferred revenue is, according to Wikipedia, "revenue not earned until the delivery of goods or services, which until then, is still owed to the payer, hence remaining a liability."

It sounds to me like it basically was just a loan, not a simple payment for exclusivity. And that's based on info that's coming right from the the head honchos at Take Two.

Now let's look at this with some easy numbers. Hopefully I've got the general idea of how this works. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway, let's say Rockstar gets $10 for each copy of Lost and Damned and Microsoft gets $10. If one million copies are sold, Microsoft keeps all $20 made from each sale for a total of $20 million. But since Microsoft is keeping Rockstar's share, the debt for Lost and Damned is reduced to $15 million. In the meantime, Rockstar considers $10 million of the $50 million Microsoft gave them to be profits for that financial period.

Now, time for some real numbers. I did a little research on what percentage Microsoft takes for each sale on XBL. Info was a little hard to come by, but the consensus seems to be 30% meaning the publisher gets 70%. So, if one million copies are sold, that means Rockstar has earned $14 million towards the repaying the debt to Microsoft. Lost and Damned supposedly passed the one million download mark back in April. That leaves roughly only 800,000 copies that need to be sold in order for the $25 million debt to Microsoft for that episode to be entirely repaid. Considering the one million sales mark was passed back in April, I don't think it is unreasonable at all expect that Rockstar will sell enough copies to completely repay the debt to Microsoft. I'm sure Gay Tony, especially with a return to all the over-the-top action found in San Andreas, will be be able to do the same and even give Lost and Damned a sales boost along the way. Throw the Episodes From Liberty City retail version into the mix and it seems like only a matter of time before the debt is repaid.

So is a soon-to-be-repaid loan enough to keep the episodes off of PS3 and PC? In the long run, there really is no benefit in keeping it exclusive to 360, at least that I can see. Obviously there are millions to be made on the PS3 and PC versions if they were to happen. This is something that I'm sure wasn't lost on Rockstar when they signed the deal with Microsoft which I'd think would keep them from signing away the option for PS3 and PC versions. I just don't see any reason to pass up the opportunity to eventually make it multiplatform when there are no long term benefits for Rockstar in keeping it exclusive to 360. I could understand why it would remain a 360 exclusive forever if that $50 million was a bonus from Microsoft compensating for any sales that wouldn't be made on PS3 and PC, but I don't think Rockstar would give up millions in sales just to say "thanks for the loan" to Microsoft.

In my opinion, sooner or later, the episodes will end up on PS3. As of right now, I no longer see any reason why they wouldn't.

According to the latest figures PS3 (slim) is outselling both Xbox and Wii.

About the theorie posted above: The loan possibility was already discussed in the old PS3/PC thread and sounds very plausible. This is something MS has done before and will do in the future. In the past all this 'Xbox Exclusive' games were ported to the PS3 after 12 months.

Here is the Ultimate Proof that :

Rockstar didn't EVER make a game only for a console. That means that they will release the DLCs to PC/PS3.And trust me that is a good reason for them to keep it that way !

GTA - First PC, after Playstation.

GTA 2- Both PC and Playstatioin

GTA III-PC,PS2 and Xbox later in Double Pack

GTA Vice City--PC,PS2 and Xbox later in Double Pack

GTA Advance-Gameboy Advance and Gameboy Color (correct me if i'm wrong ! PSP or DS wasn't released back there.

GTA San Andreas-PS2,Xbox and later PC

GTA Liberty City Stories-PSP later PS2

GTA Vice City Stories-PSP and later PS2

GTA IV-PS3, 360 and later PC

GTA Chinatown Wars-DS and Later PSP

GTA IV TLAD|

| 360 (Waiting for the next console release.

GTA IV BoGT|

If you see there isn't a GTA only for one console !

Here is a bit of interesting information on the subject of the PS3 getting DLC.

"I don't know entirely what I can talk about, but it's on Xbox. Microsoft came to us and said 'hey here is some money if you can bring the content to us FIRST"

http://www.ps3center.net/news/3967/rumor-r...-5-and-ps3-dlc/

So make of that what you will, but it is looking increasingly likely that what me and others have predicted ALL ALONG is going to happen ie the DLC is a TIMED exclusive and will eventually make it's way to the PC and PS3.
